1572236 Well some of these I'm technically starting now but only because I finished with my December reads. And I'm sure I won't be "Done" with them in January because some of them are pretty long but this is what I'll be working on.

Faerie Wars
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
The Name of the Wind
The Eye of the World
Griffin's Daughter

-- Wife of GR Author Michael J. Sullivan | The Crown Conspiracy | Avempartha

811687 I just started reading Mistborn: The Final Empire. I'm off work this week and the book is starting out really good, so I may be able to finish it in December. Next up is A Lion Among Men: Volume Three in the Wicked Years. It wasn't on my wish list, but I got it as a Christmas gift from my husband, so I have to read it next.

1033687 Planning to finish up Crossroads of Twilight by Robert Jordan and You Got Nothing Coming by Jimmy Lerner.

Planning to email Leslie for a copy of her book Griffin's Daughter and read that. Hoping to start Nemesis by Louise Cooper and finish it before classes start up again. This may be wishful thinking.

message 4: by Stephen (new)

71698 I loved the Amulet of Samarkand and the other books in the Bartimeaus Trilogy, very fun reads. On my TBR pile for January, and I hope to get at least 3 or 4 of them in

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
The Hunger Games
Wolves of the Calla
Song of Susannah
The Dark Tower

message 5: by LaTrica (new)

1833981 Right now I hope to get to The Charnel Prince. I finished The Briar King some time ago and should get on the rest of the series.

message 6: by Elizabeth (new)

629344 Please don't hold me to these but the next pile of books from my Fantasy shelf are:

His Majesty's Dragon
Cybele's Secret
Dream Angus: The Celtic God of Dreams
The Red Shoes and Other Tattered Tales
A Game of Thrones
Yvain, Or, the Knight With the Lion

A Game of Thrones and His Majesty's Dragon have been recommended so many times, I don't think I should put them off any longer.

message 7: by Laurel (new)

1079533 Elizabeth, you won't find either a disappointment. They're excellent!

message 8: by Josh (last edited Dec 31, 2008 08:48PM) (new)

221650 I'm almost done with "A Bridge of Years", by Robert Charles Wilson.

I'll be reading "The Tales of Beedle the Bard", which I imagine won't occupy more than one day.

Then it's on to "The Last Argument of Kings" by Joe Abercrombie, which I'm almost afraid to finish for fear of how it ends.

After that, possibly the Mistborn sequels.

message 9: by Jane (new)

1743251 I'm reading Name of the Wind - I'm enjoying it so far.

message 10: by Cameron (new)

Nophoto-m-25x33 I'm reading A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin. I keep hearing from people that the first 100 pages or so aren't that great, but I'm actually enjoying the beginning to this novel.

message 11: by Sandi (new)

811687 I got started on "A Lion Among Men" this week. So far, I'm not impressed. At least it's short. I'm still working on Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson and am reading Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders by Neil Gaiman. The book drawer of my nightstand is full, so I have lots of choices for my next read.

1059245 Sandi wrote: The book drawer of my nightstand is full, so I have lots of choices for my next read.

Sounds like MY nightstand, Sandi! I'm about a third of the way through a little humorous sci-fi book by fellow L.A. writer Robin Reed called Xanthan Gumm It's the tale of an alien who grows up watching Earth movies, and who decides he wants to come to Earth to be in the Movies, like E.T. did. Oh, and he wants to meet the King of Earth, Steven Spielberg. I'm also still working on The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein.

message 13: by Amy (new)

478604 On my to-read list for January:
Mistborn: The Final Empire
The Well of Ascension
The Hero of Ages
Storm Front
The People of Sparks
and in case I need a break from fantasy, I have several Georgette Heyer novels on hand.

message 14: by Becky (new)

1376766 Leslie, that book sounds so cute! I'm gonna have to check it out now. :)

message 15: by Laurel (new)

1079533 This may be a silly thing to post, but I just bought my very first house! I'm so excited!

The great thing about it, is that there is a little sun room that I can turn into a reading nook. Book shelves, comfy chair, it will be bliss! I've always wanted my own reading space!

It will be the perfect place to read the rest of the Mistborn series...

I hope you enjoy it Amy - I just recently read it and I did. One of the better fantasy books I've read.

LOL - Thanks for sharing that Laurel - It's a great time to be a first home buyer - Congratz

695116 Laurel, your first house is an awesome accomplishment. Good luck with it & congrats!!!

message 20: by Eric (new)

756964 Right now I am finishing up Anathem by Neal Stephenson at home and reading A Thousand Words for Stranger by Julie Czerneda at work and on commutes.

On the fantasy horizon, I see The Graveyard Book, some Harry Dresden, and Princeps Fury.

message 21: by Leslie, Author promotions Mod (new)

1059245 Congratulations, Laurel on your first house. Amazing, especially in these harsh economic times. You should be very proud.

message 22: by Amy (new)

478604 Laurel,
Congratulations! My daughter is trying to set up a reading area in her room - unfortunately, we're a little short of space (too many books) - so I envy you your reading nook!
Robin,
I finished Mistborn last night, and so will now be able to participate in the discussion!

message 23: by Sandi (new)

811687 Eric, "A Thousand Words for Stranger" is my next read. It's a selection for the Yahoo reading I belong to.

1166414 Sunroom for a reading room sounds great ! Now to find a place for the bookcases :) Laurel shall be doing much reading now. Congrats !

Nophoto-f-25x33 I have just begun GRRM's A Game of Thrones. This is my first GRRM book. I'm excited!

I'm also "re-reading" Eye of the World, and going to work my way through the series. I have these on audio book on my iPod. I go to the library and borry the audio books on CD and rip them into my iTunes and then I can listen all day while at work.

Yay! Another person reading A Game of Thrones. :)

message 27: by Laurel (new)

1079533 Thanks everyone - I'm grinning from ear to ear! Happy reading!

message 28: by Robin (new)

1572236 I definite want to read GRRM Game of Thrones - I'm about 1/3 thorugh Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell which is pretty dense but once I'm done with it.

I've also started Griffin's Daughter

Still reading Faerie Wars

message 29: by Rachel (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I am greatly enjoying Game of Thrones, but have been having trouble finding the time to read this past week. It's driving me crazy to see that book sitting there but just can't get to it. I'm having a minor operation (gall bladder) later this week, so I'll be home resting for several days in a row. I think I will probably be able to churn it out then.

message 30: by Robin (new)

1572236 Ouch Kahlen - sorry to hear you have to have surgery - but I'm sure you will enjoy the down time to read! -- Bright side to everything.

message 31: by Jeanne, Monthly book reading Mod (new)

1042102 Oh Kahlen, I've had that surgery albeit back in 1982 when it left a huge 12 inch scar from stem to stern. Now they do it with 4 little incisions and recovery is much easier. Just realize that afterwards your system needs to re-adjust to producing bile on demand since it no longer has the storage so there will be a few dietary adjustments for a while afterwards. Things will level out within a year so just hang in there!

1875487 Currently reading Brisingr and The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson. Hopefully i will have time to start and finish Hero of Ages as well. I'm on a Brandon Sanderson BINGE! Elantris is also on my list after those two.

You'll love the second one, still keeps that flare, i don't see it being a "middle" book like most series make it. Just hope the ending was as good as the first. :)
I would have done the free download but I can no longer bring myself to read a book on a computer. My eyes hurt after a few minutes.

message 35: by Mohammed (new)

1842155 My current reading book is Araminta Station by Jack Vance.

After Vance its in that order:

Perdido Street Station by China Mèiville
Nova by Samuel R Delany
After Dark My Sweet by Jim Thompson
Death Masks by Jim Butcher

I have taken advantage of the holidays and have already finished several other books in janauri.

Personal record if im able to finish these books and read more than 5 a month.

message 36: by Elise (new)

1805316 I just finished Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. I'm currently in the middle of The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson. Also I try to read a short story every night from my Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume 1 edited by Robert Silverberg.

Then I have Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne, for when I can't sleep.

Did you like Inkheart? I want to read it before the movie.

It was all right, not quite as good as I expected it to be. I wanted to read it before the movie too. I definitely did like the idea of bringing characters to life by reading out loud. Imagine if you could do that? But I think I might have set my expectations too high for this one.

message 39: by Jackie (new)

1660443 I enjoyed the Inkworld series. A bit simple but it is for children and young adults. I wasn't expecting life altering revelations, LOL, just a good ride which it provided. The premise was amazing, reading character into life and being able to read yourself into a book, yeah, that's my total fantasy, of course I'm going to like it.

The Changing Land by Roger Zelazny is my current read.
Already read in January:
Dance of the Gods and Valley of Silence by Nora Roberts in her Circle Trilogy. Better than I thought it would be, because I didn't expect to like it at all. Predictable but enjoyable for the characters.
'Sir Gawain and The Green Knight' by Tolkien, which I didn't like at all. The format wasn't to my liking and it ruined it for me.
The Front by Patricia Cornwell, another one that was so predictable and it didn't have the merit of memorable characters.
And 4 non-fiction books:
Currently Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance An Inquiry Into Values
The Healing Runes - Loose Book Tools For The Recovery Of Body, Mind, Heart, & Soul
Heal Your Body
The Book of Celtic Symbols

I'm looking for Staff of Power by Susan A. Rule here in the US, no luck yet. I'll read that as soon as I get it in hand. Otherwise I don't really have a plan as to what I'm going to read. I just see what I feel like reading when it's time to choose another book. I'd like to get to Terry Brooks Genesis of Shannara sometime soon, possibly next on my reading list.

message 40: by Jackie (last edited Jan 18, 2009 09:02AM) (new)

1660443 Today I'm starting Terry Brooks's Genesis of Shannara series with Armageddon's Children up first. Next in the series are:
The Elves of Cintra and
The Gypsy Morph

I've had these for a while, but was waiting for the series to be completed so I can read them back to back. This series is the bridge between the 3 part The Word and the Void Omnibus series and the legendary and lengthy Shannara series. I am so looking forward to settling down with this series!

message 41: by Shan (new)

1796397 So far I've already 'decimated' quite a few books! Here's the list:

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede
The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson
Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

I still have a few things to go though and so little time to read it in ^_^ Let's see... I have a few books to go, but they're funny and light, so I still have hope. My roommate suggested them and so far I'm not disappointed. Here's the coming up books:

Summon the Keeper by Tanya Huff
The Second Summoning by Tanya Huff
Long Hot Summoning by Tanya Huff

message 42: by Jon (new)

899665 I'm currently reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and about a third finished. I've been very surprised at this novel. I read many reviews of it and many commented on how slow it seemed. I'm not experiencing any slowness at all. In fact, it's a such a joy to read, I'm not getting much else done!

After this, I'll read The Ghost Brigades and put science fiction behind me for awhile to read If Not Now, When? and/or The Book Thief.

message 43: by Amy (new)

478604 Jon,
I'm listening to the audio cd of The Book Thief right now. I'm about half way through and it's great so far. I highly recommend it.

message 44: by Viktoria, Author Contact Mod (new)

1033687 Change in my readings. Still planning to read Griffin's Daughter but thanks for classes i also have to read:
The Challenge of Human Rights Their Origin, Development, and Significance
Understanding Violence
The Female Offender Girls, Women and Crime
The Prince
Justice, Crime, and Ethics
Leviathan
The Communist Manifesto
The Social Contract

and something else by John Locke. Naturally I won't finish all of this in one months but wow it's a heavy load. Feel free to buy stock in Vivarin. I think it's about to go up lol.

message 45: by JJ, Group founder (new)

1166414 LOL thats a lot of books to read ! I hope your a faster reader than myself as that list would take me ages to read through. Good Luck !

message 46: by Maurice (new)

121297 I just bought Dhampir by Barb and J.C. Hendee. It looks like it's going to be exciting vampire fantasy. It will be competing with other fantasy for my attention. Some of these include: The Pearl by Deborah Chester, Fire Logic by Laurie J. Marks, Talon of the Silver Hawk by Raymond E. Feist, Acacia by David Anthony Durham, and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. So much to read and so little time. :-)

Summon the Keeper is very different from the two follow-up novels, much more development of character and plot. The Second Summoning is much more humorous. I would recommend her Confederation of Valor series and her Smoke series.

Yes, well sadly I don't have a say in the matter. It's an assigned book. We're not reading all of Leviathan anyway. Thank the gods...

So far this looks to be a very dense semester with a lot of difficult material to cover. On the upside there is a lot of writing involved :D (yes, thats a good thing ;))
