Does anyone have any good recommendations for books set in the Appalachian mountains around the turn of the century through 1930's?

is very good - a turn of the century girl who goes to teach school in the Appalachian mountains. (It might be a slightly earlier time period, but the writer makes the point that time moves slowly in that region so I doubt the historical feeling will be impacted.) An excellent book - it is evangelical, but don't let that put you off if you don't like evangelical fiction - I don't either, usually, but the book is a well balanced story which doesn't just talk about the problems of faith, but other life problems as well like romance, daily life, work, etc.

Try Ron Rash. His books are located in Western NC and SC. He is also a professor at Western Carolina University in the Appalachian mountains. Really a great author!

takes place in the Appalachians, but it starts in the 1930s and continues up until today.
