Please, please be careful. I'm in a fragile emotional state as I have read all seven of the HP books in the last week and have been bawling for the last hour or two.WHY OH WHY is this woman not writing anymore? I want the blanks between chapter 36 and the epilogue.... "nineteen years later" does not suffice...
I am so sad. So sad.
I noticed you were making a marthon run on HP. Inspired me to pull out my books and movies. 10 year old Dan Radcliffe was so adorable. 18 year old naked Dan Radcliffe kept jumping to the front on my mind during my viewing of HP 1 though.
I tried to watch OotP several weeks ago but I sucked down a bottle of wine right before so I can't remember anything past the opening credits. Maybe I'll read it before I watch it. Now where did I put my Stephen Fry audiobooks??
My Manga Corner update
Tsubasa 1: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE
I've had book 1 for ages and finally got around to reading it. I love seeing so many characters from old series (even if they aren't exactly like their original incarnations), especially Sakura and Shaoran. I'm really curious about the story surrounding Fai. I think a trip to the library is in order!
Woah, the library, lol! So, the storyline is good in Tsubasa, Sans? I've had some trouble following CLAMP stories.
Book 1 was great! I'm 1/2 way through book 2 right now and not having any trouble. It's a lot easier than some of their other series (X mostly).
Okay, thanks! I'm going to check it out. *heading to the library*
X/1999 was beautiful. Everything was so gray, which is tough to do. All those subtle changes in tone. It would have been easy for it to disappear into blobiness. But it was gorgeous! And it really matched the story, where the guy was supposed to make that big choice. During the story he was in the middle between the two. But I just couldn't get into the characters. I don't know why.
7. Under the Blood Red Moon by Mina HepsenMeh. It read like fanfiction. It's supposed to take place in 1871 but I seriously doubt anyone would have shouted, "Die, you bastard" in 1871. I might be wrong, but the dialogue just didn't flow for me.
8. Making Sense of Japanese What the Textbooks Don't Tell You. Helpful in understanding the 'big picture' surrounding a few of the more enigmatic aspects of etymology specific to Japanese.
Sarah wrote: "I wish I could want to learn about stuff like you do! I'm so jealous of you!"
Ha! Well, learning this stuff has proved absolutely useless in my day to day life. Kinda like everything I learned in high school actually...
I've studied Japanese on and off for, crap, 10 years now. I've never progressed very far since my interest peaks for a month or two every couple of years. I like to think of myself as educationally bipolar.
Me too!!! I took 3 semesters of Japanese in college and I've been studying it on my own for about 10 years total as well (couple of years in high school before college, then off and on since then). The latest: I just bought "My Japanese Coach" for the DS. I have to say, I think it has really strong potential to be very helpful, but I won't really know til I get to lessons where I don't already know all the words.
You must be that twin sister my parents keep telling me about. ^_~That sounds like an interesting program! Let me know how it is. I think we have DS...we have something. My hand-eye coordination is pretty much non-existent when it comes to video or computer games.
I tried to take a refresher course at the local community college but it was soooo slooooooow. I kept wanting to do everyone's work so we could move on!
11. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, read by Stephen Fry.
"Arthur lay in the mud and squelched at him." Cracks me up ever time. As does Stephen's reading of Vogon poetry.
I adorrrrrrrrre that whole series. My fave Hitchhiker's line is "The ship hovered in the air in precisely the way that bricks don't." (Something like that. I have all my fave quotes from it saved on GoodReads.) :D
Fantastic quote!!
I have the omnibus at home and intend to read it one day. For now, I'm happy having my favourite celebrity read it to me. ^_^
12. Revenge A Novel by Stephen FryWow. I'm both pleased and appalled. I haven't read The Count of Monte Cristo (yet) but I certainly will now.
They keep playing the SAME movies here at every hotel where we've stayed. I've seen the Count of Monte Cristo (with Henry Cavill!) 3 times already.
13. I Heart You, You Haunt Me by Lisa SchroederI was quite literally bawling through the last 40 pages. Super quick read, very angsty but very sweet.
Ok, maybe I will have to borrow the book from you, Sans!Yes, Jayne, that's why I watched it *3* times! LOL
Sans. For the love of all that is holy. Please read the unabridged version of Monte Cristo. It is so much better. And FYI,....the movie is NOTHING like the book. The only similiarites are the beginning bit and the names of the characters. I was SO dissapointed in the movie.
If you didn't know. Monte Cristo is my ALL TIME favorite book. EVER.
Sarah, you might want to check out Revenge (the UK title was: The Stars Tennis Balls). It was very good!
Lady Jayne wrote: "Henry Cavill?? *swoons* :-) "
Ahhhh. I share your swoon Lady Jane!!!
I love the movie Count of Monte Cristo! A little bit of eye candy never hurt anyone ;)
Hope I get to read the book soon too!
Hi Irina! Good to see you. :-) Yeah, I'd like to read the book, too, seeing as it is Sarah's "ALL TIME favorite book. EVER."
It so totally is m'dear.Sans....is Revenge funny? Or a satire? Or is it completely serious?
I'm seriously debating skipping sleep today...or at least part of it...for some Monte Cristo.
Sarah wrote: "is Revenge funny? Or a satire? Or is it completely serious?"It's serious & suspenseful. Unlike the Liar (which has made me laugh several times in the first 30 pages), it's brutal and harsh and bloody. As I said, I was both pleased and appalled. Don't look for humor here.
I have to draft a form to be filed with the SEC today but I'll PM you about the book this afternoon if you'd like.
Want to borrow my copy? I'd like it back when you're finished (unlike HoL - how are you coming on that by the by?) but won't re-read it for a while.
I agree with Sarah. I do love the Monte Cristo movie, but there is so much more to the book, and it is sooo good. My sister and I don't usually agree on books, but Monte Cristo is her all-time favorite too, and she had me read it years ago. It's very, very good.
Sarah, have you seen that old movie Sleepers? They refer to Monte Cristo a ton in that movie. In that case, the book is better as well.
Ok. Need to see Sleepers. And Sans, I would love to read it!
HoL....haven't picked it back up. I want to read it, but other things are grabbing my attention.
Jenn wrote: "you guys are making me feel like I just walked in on something I wasn't supposed to."A parlour is a perfectly sensible place to discuss chocolate and reading and rainy afternoons and all the other little pleasures in life. *halo*
