Whitney (wsquared) | 42 comments The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour was first place in our April reading poll. It has received three starred reviews so far. What do you think? Is it Printz-worthy?

Megan (LoveWhenYouLove) I liked this one. It was kind of like Paper Towns meets Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. I thought the characters and the story were great, but for me, it was missing that special something that a Printz winner needs.

Hannahlily | 12 comments Just finished reading it. I really enjoyed the book, but I don't see it as Printz-worthy. Seems much fluffier than what the committees generally choose, although the writing was lovely and the characters fantastic.

Totally agree awith your comparisons. I was thinking of John Green's books the whole time I was reading it!

message 5: by Kathy, The Brain Lair (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kathy (thebrainlair) | 182 comments I didn't think this was fluffy. I thought it was "normal". I loved that is was just down to earth real issues. Nothing dramatic but still, for them, life changing.

Jasper was predictable and some events were convenient, but I can see it honoring.

Hannahlily | 12 comments Hmmm... Well fluffy was a poor choice of words. I just don't think it has the depth of many of the Printz winners I have read. I'm glad you mentioned the convenient plot, because that was the only thing that really bothered me about the book. Too many coincidences! Other than that, I thought it was practically a perfect, quintessential YA novel - just not sure what more I could glean from a reread, and it seems like Printz books need to pass that reread test. I really really like this book, I just don't see it standing up to a committee discussing it for ages.

When I look at last year's honor books, I feel that way about the two I read - not up to a reread. But, at the same time, when I was reading
Why We Broke Up I felt it had that quirky offbeat feel of a Printz book. Same with The Scorpio Races. I gave that one a high rating because I thought it was a Printz type book. I only know a few people who actually liked it though!

I would say, my greatest fear is the Printz becoming like the Newbery - full of books that no one but teachers and librarians would read. I want them to continue having books we can discuss and I can recommend to students!

I agree with this 110%! So far, I am quite pleased with the (46) Printz books I've read. I actually adored Why We Broke Up and really admired The Scorpio Races. Didn't love it, but I think it's impeccably written and I'm sure there are some teens out there who will adore it. Didn't get the appeal of The Returning or Jasper Jones AT ALL, but I know people, who love those ones too. I would be thrilled to pieces to see The Disenchantments recognized! We'll just have to wait and see what happens :)

Cheri | 19 comments Loved it. The characters really rang true for me and I bought a copy to give to a new high school graduate in June. I thought the book was faced paced and the ending was just what I would have wanted it to be. It is my favorite so far this year.

Anne (Librarianguish) | 11 comments I just finished the book today, and really enjoyed it. It may not have the "spark" of a Printz winner, but I felt most of the characters were well done and fit into the story well. Some of the situations were pretty random, but then transitioning from high school to the big world can be pretty strange and random.

I can see a lot of teens enjoying this book, but it might be a hard sell to guys because there's a girl on the cover.
