Talk about whatever you want to. Anything that is on your mind, something that is not on a discussion.

Can be about movies or books or whatever :)

Nick Nicholas (nicksnicholas) | 90 comments Hhmmm.. ok... philosophic thoughts about getting old(er) by the decade (post teen years)

**** sorry it's the first thing that popped into my mind!! ****

In your 20s your are fearless, can rule the world and feel no pain!

In your 30s..ouch..stuff starts to hurt, and recovery is not like what it used to be and your view of the world changes (i.e. reality sets in)

In your 40s..OMG! stuff doesn't work the same like it used to, you understand why older people are crotchity and you yourself stop taking shit from anyone.

In your 50s.... [ FILL IN THE BLANK ] cause I'm not there yet.

60s,70s.80s.90s....god willing one day I will know..

PFFTT the rest... or chime in with your own thoughts.

Nick

Anne Mikusinsi (abghostwriter) | 1 comments On another subject entirely, does anyone watch Food Network?

And do any of you watch "Person of Interest" ?

message 8: by Nick (new)

Nick Nicholas (nicksnicholas) | 90 comments I used to watch food network all the time, but not for the past several years! :-(

I DVR'd a few episodes of Person of Interest, but wasn't that thrilled with it. I only watched the first few, then just never watched again. I might try to pick up on it again in syndication.

I was really into Terra Nova which was a series that didn't get picked up for a second season. I don't get much time to watch TV so for me it was a choice between Person of Interest and Terra Nova. I'm guessing Person of Interest has been picked up then for another season?

I liked cup cake wars until they used salmon as an ingredient. Gross!!!

I would love to know the weather in Britain !!!! Any one ever heard of the Pennine Way? That's one if my dream hikes !!

Nick Nicholas (nicksnicholas) | 90 comments Oh another somewhat different subject...Our real-life Dystopian Society.

I experienced my own real-life Hunger Games yesterday..or rather Corporate America's version of it.

My company made a list of people to RIF (reduction in workforce). This was the 5th apparently, annual one. Then they called each person one by one (the reaping) and I was on the list! (No Katniss either to save me!)

:-(

After 13 years too. Lots of people made the list in fact, a couple from each department (i.e. 12 districts, 2 people).

Now we are in the job search market having to get all prettied up (where's Cinna??) to make a good impression for new employers (sponsors) while we now all compete (the games) for the same small amount of jobs available in the market here (the arena).

LOL - sorry folks I am actually making light of a pretty crappy event, else I'd be totally going down the wrong path in my head!

It just stuck me as pretty funny at the analogy I made as this was going on, I had to write it somewhere. So where else then the place I shared the actual read of The Hunger games with people!

Oh my Gosh Nick! I'm so sorry this happened to you. Your analogy is right on the money!

Hey Nick to get books you should start up your own review site and then go to netgalley and review books and get them for free. Save you some money

message 12: by Nick (new)

Nick Nicholas (nicksnicholas) | 90 comments Christy,

Thank you! In my 42 years, I've never experienced anything like this before. I've been through lay-offs, but I've always been the one saying goodbye to the people leaving, never asked to leave! But now the search for new employer begins...

So as for the reviews- inspired by goodreads, the BTS web site (you, crystal, tons of other people I've met on here) and this BTS group here, that's exactly what I did! I started a new blog specifically to publish my reviews! it's called http://candleswineandabook.wordpress.... - Right now it's just a collection of review's I've done here on goodreads, but I plan to step it up!

Thank you for the netgalley info - I was not aware of that. Sounds like a great way to get books and give something back to the author and reader.

Net Galley is fun, but beware, pretty covers can be deceiving lol. I've read a stinker and some great one's.

Nadja Notariani | 46 comments I'm sorry to hear about your RIF status, Nick. It's a tough economy right now. I sure hope you find something fast. What kind of work do you do? Does your wife work also? It is so scary to think about. My husband is the sole provider (I am starting to make some money from my novels...but nothing like his income...lol) and I feel ill when I think about him losing his job.
G-d will provide. Chin up! You and your family will be in my thoughts.

Thank you for your thoughts Nadja. My wife works, but it was mostly for something to do and "extras." The good part is she can pick up on our medical benefits now until I find something.

I work in the Information Technology Security Industry. Up until a few days ago I was a Senior Director of IT Security for my former company. They let go a lot of senior people, some even there much more than my own 13 years. Many jobs moved off shore in the recent years too. Its just a sad fact about American Corporations today (actually, I'm sure its true elsewhere, I just only know about the US)

I will eventually find another job, but I am sure I wont be able to replace my full income as I was there for quite sometime and sure it was the reason many of us were let go.

In the meantime I can continue to improve my writing skills and work on getting that first self-published book under my belt in between job hunting and interviews!

I am confident that I have collected enough good karma in my life, and that something very positive will come out of this. It has too!

:-)

Nick

any other nerds watch Battle Star Galactica?

message 19: by Nick (new)

Nick Nicholas (nicksnicholas) | 90 comments Me! I didn't watch it as the series aired, but I watched it after the fact start - to - finish - including Caprica. I loved it. ( I assume you mean the sexy new re-done version, not the campy space show from when I was a lad)

Christy Wilhelm | 282 comments Mod
I watched the old one 2 :0 I don't remember it all that much... I love the new one's I bought the series except the last one.
How did you feel about how it ended?????
I don't know anyone else who watched it!!

message 21: by Nick (new)

Nick Nicholas (nicksnicholas) | 90 comments I was not happy with the ending of the series. I thought it was a big disappointment. I also was not happy how they had cancelled Caprica and had to rush to tie loose ends. Word has it there is another series coming out that goes between Caprica and BSG, so I am hoping that comes to pass.

There is also a movie BSG: Razor - It re-tells some of the story but from the Cylon's point of view. If you didn't catch it, you should. It fills in a lot.

I fell in love with Starbuck. At first I was very put off, with expectations of the original series, but then I grew to really enjoy the role and Katee Sackhoff is just such a badass gruff hottie.

To be honest, when I first saw the series air, I watched a little bit and was completely put off by the sex stuff in the series, being a hard core Sci-fi fan and not so much used to having cylons run around naked and all.. that's when I wrote it off, but later bought all of the seasons to give it another chance. Glad I did it turns out I like Space Soap-opera's which is truly what I believe this is. There is so much more to that series than the spaceships and lasers and all that jazz. There is a real human connection, relationships, romance, suspense, all tied together in the sci-fi psuedo-realistic wrapper. It's a great series overall, 5 stars in my book and I highly recommend it to anyone.
