1768003 Hiya all I'm Sam and I live in Cardiff in South Wales, I'm 25 and an ecologist so during the winter I'm in the office and thus on Goodreads a lot. I'm out and about in the summer but I still manage to get lots of reading done (especially during nighttime bat surveys when there's little else to do).

I'm a self confessed horror junkie but recently and largely thanks to Goodreads I've starting expanding my repertoire and have been reading quite a mixture of books (still not keen on chick lit though).

Nophoto-f-25x33 Hey, I love my books too! I've got every room in my house virtually wallpapered with them! That's the nice thing about living in the 21st century - I can have the best of both worlds. When I couldn't get out to the book store for my hardback copy of Diana Gabaldon's new release (An Echo in the Bone), my Kindle really came thru for me. I had the book in less than a minute and was reading along w/the rest of the Jamie & Claire fans! But yes, I too like to do my reading the good old-fashioned way most of the time.

2555355 Hello to all!

I'm seriously not new here but I haven't introduced myself as of yet. I am a mother of three, and a grandmother of three. Lucky 6...I spent many years working in CS and HR and in 2007 decided to devote all of my extra time and energy into fulfilling my dreams. I'm doing that now, I am the proud author of my first book! River of Tears. I live in AZ with my husband and youngest son and his girlfriend and we love the weather. Nice to meet you all. I write fiction, and read both non-fiction and fiction. I love to read so the book-a-holics is a place I'm comfy with.

2018128 Hey you guys! I'm Donna Jo. I'm single, and live near Baton Rouge, LA. I'm an administrative assistant at a small business. SO, I get to do A LOT of reading! YAY! Love it! I'm the proud mommy to a 4 yr old Rat terrier, Brodie, he's my world! I am definitely a book-a-holic! I cannot go a week without buying a book w/o withdrawals! no joke! It's ridiculous! I love paranormal romances, especially vampires & wolf shape shifters. I also like the vampire/shapshifter regular books, haha. I love the classics, Pride & Prejudice is my most fave! I love wars and the 18th-19th centuries. I also love Chuck Palahniuk's books. If it's good I'll read it, if I really like it I'll keep it. If it's not good and I started it I'll make myself read it, but I won't keep it. I am obsessed over series/sagas! I always have a book with me, before I buy a purse, I have to make sure my books will fit in it! No joke! haha Now...if I can find me a nice guy that loves to read and understands my love of books, I will be a happy woman! But for now, it's just me and my dog, who doesn't mind the books b/c when momma has a book it means snuggle time! It's great to meet all of you, but now, back to my book!!

2262290 Hello -- My name is Eric. I recently published my debut novel, "Piercing the Veil." My goal, as with most authors, is to find my way to the Best Sellers list. Below is a synopsis of what may book is about.

SYNOPSIS
"There is one question that ultimately every great warrior is forced to confront. If he himself will not ask it, it will be asked of him.

My book deals with a hostage situation in a certain southeastern African country and a rescue attempt by Navy SEALs. Does this sound like today’s headlines? My book anticipated these events by several years.

My book is not just one story but really the narrative blend of two stories separated by more than a thousand years. One represents the most enduring quest in the western world while the other is contemporary mirror of that same quest plus the spike of contemporary terrorism. What unites them is the fact that both embody the story of knighthood. Lest one think the concept of knighthood has faded, one has only to compare the legacy of medieval chivalric conduct in everything from the decorum of contemporary military conduct to the deference given to symbols of rank. Salutes, and ceremonial paraphernalia, such as, swords, stars, and even coats of arms, are all among the contemporary reflections of a distant mirror. Perhaps the United States Marines most successfully illustrate this in their advertisements in which they use swords and even medieval depictions of armor to illustrate the time honored facets of warrior conduct."

A recent review by Simon Barrett can be viewed at:
http://www.bloggernews.net/122012

My book is available through:
www.amazon.com
www.barnesandnoble.com
www.borders.com

I hope you take the time to read it and please let me know your thoughts. I look forward to reading them.

Thank you.

Nophoto-f-25x33 MJ -- I love books too and, as I watch newspaper companies fold, I wonder if books will one day follow. I hope not. So, I continue to buy the "real McCoy," so to speak. I want something I can take with me anywhere, that doesn't depend on batteries, plugs, or any electronic device. Just me and the book and my imagination.

1092580 Hi! I'm Peter. I read almost anything, but my primary areas of interest are science fiction, mysteries, fantasy, and children's books - preferably pre-1970s, since I don't have a high opinion of most modern authors and publishers. I've been collecting books for many years, and my personal collection must be in the thousands by now. Unfortunately part of it is still boxed in the basement, and I'm almost afraid to go down and see what shape the books are in.

Currently I'm reading C.S. Lewis' The Silver Chair to my son (he's seven; we worked our way through the Dolittle books, now we're doing Narnia), and Walden on my commute. Plus I'm re-reading Robert A. Heinlein's I Will Fear No Evil for the 10th-15th time; it's not one of his best by any means, but the grumpy old bastard undeniably had a great gift for storytelling.

I read constantly (my commute includes at least two hours a day on the train), and buy books as often as I can. Unfortunately I usually have to look for bargains, since money is tight. But I also spend a lot of time with my son at our local library, which has a fairly large section of used books on sale for less than a dollar each.

The neat thing is that I'm able to turn most of my students into book-a-holics also. This sounds like a neat group.

Nophoto-f-25x33 Hello All! I'm Emily and I live in Virginia Beach. I teach Special Ed students in 4th and K. I love to read and hope that some of that rubs off onto my students, not always the easiest thing to do. This summer I am trying to read as many books as possible and I think I'm up to 5 in a month. Anyway, I love all types of books, but I'm not too keen on SciFi. That's all for now!

1770025 Hi everyone! I'm Catherine, a 51 year old teacher of Spanish and high school English. I've been married 28 years and have a great daughter who works as a phlebotomist. My husband is a luthier. We have 2 cats (surrogate children) and live in Fargo, ND. I have a house full of books ( a guest that stayed with us commented that sleeping in the guest room is like sleeping in a library!) I decided to join this group after looking things over because of the diversity represented here: young - not so young, male -female, east coast - west coast - no coast - all coast, you get the idea.

Like some of the people here, I am a writer. I've had a few poems published and an essay or two. My career doesn't allow me to write with any regularity, so I started a journal that I email to family and friends about once a week, then archive to use for ideas later.

My taste in reading is pretty eclectic. What I like most is good writing. Thanks for sharing your reading experiences with me. :-)

1004612 Hi, I'm Cliff, 35 years old, a Christian. I work as a library assistant at my city's one and only public library, I also help receive the books that are sent to the library, and I look up obits for the patrons. I'm currently pursuing a BA in English at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, and would like to be an editor, proofreader, ghostwriter, full time novelist, or anything involving the written word. I love to read science fiction(almost every sub genre), military drama, historical biographies, and some Christian fiction.

I'm also a published author of so far, two science fiction novels. "Out of Time" is a time travel novella published in 2008 and "Don't Mess With Earth" is a novel published this year. I won 3rd in a short story contest way back in high school, and I'm currently working on two more novels. You can find my novels here on Goodreads if interested.

message 159: by Tammie (new)

2304074 Hi, I am Tammie. I am an ecletic reader. I don't have one favorite genre, and my favorite books come from many. I do like chic lit, sometimes, but rarely romance. I love a good mystery or crime novel, but detest gore. Comedy is always fun, but my favorites would have to be historical novels (fiction or nonfiction) and fantasy. My background is eclectic as well, as I am the product of growing up Southern/Outlaw biker, multiracial, mulitcultural. I am a workaholic who reads to relax. Besides loving motorcycling and daredevils, I love dogs (big ones primarily) and kids. Have lots of each, and my eldest daughter just made me a grandmother, although I am too young to either look like one or feel like one, lol, but my legacy continues.

Nophoto-u-25x33 Hi, I'm Shari. I'm a lawyer by profession, but have just moved to Dubai with my husband, and don't have a job yet, so lucky for me, heaps of time to read! Have been a bookworm since I was born. My mum read to me in the cradle, and the journey began there. Much to the annoyance of my friends, I used to read on the school bus, at lunch, and even during class when I was supposed to be doing maths! If I wasn't reading during maths, I was writing stories, something I always wanted to pursue, but life got in the way. Am thinking of taking it up again. Because we have moved overseas, all my books are in boxes in storage. I miss them! Have already been to a used book sale and bought about 30 books already (only been here 2 months!). Can't wait to read more about the books you all love - I'm mainly into the classics and non-fiction, but starting to branch out into more contemporary literature. Recommendations welcome - feel free to add me as a friend!

So I guess if you would like to learn more about me in great detail, check out my auto titled Starset Nights in my writings. Feel free to leave any and all feedback good or bad.

Thanks for letting me be a part of your group! I can't wait to get to know you!

Also, feel free to add me as a friend. I also enjoy more personal conversations. I would love to exchange works with any members interested.

1010099 Hi, I am a 68 yr old retired fish pathologist with an insatiable hunger for books. I started reading before I started school, fell in love with books, and when I discovered public libraries I thought that must be heaven. I since was drafted during the Vietnam War, married, raised 4 kids and put them through college, and realize that I was mistaken. Still, I love books, so much so that I have to occasionally haul away a van load at a time. I agree with others in this group that used books are perfectly fine, and my favorite bookstore is Goodwill Industries. My reading interests are varied, with special interest in (of all things) the arctic and the Amazon, fiction and true life, serious and fanciful. But I read mostly what catches my attention at the moment. See my book list on Goodreads to see what I am currently reading.

1607255 Hi,

Rosemary Chaulk here. I just finished Positively Fifth Street By James McManus. If it were not for the fact I am a Texas Holdem addict I would not have liked the book. I am currently reading Storm of the Century by Stephen King.

What I really like to do is writing. Last year I published “Nissitissit Witch” about witchcraft and pollution. Everyone who has read it loved it. The book is for all ages. This year I am writing the worlds first female science fiction. The future will not be a war of man against machines trying to take over the world. As humans we will carry all our flaws into the future. As a race were we really any different one hundred year ago, or even two thousand years ago. Sure we have many more things now a day and our lifestyle is different but we are still the same greedy backbiting race we were then. The future is no different, as we will continue to be the same.

So how about someone giving Nissitissit Witch a chance? Read it and commenting about the book, I am sure you will love it. I have had six blog talk radio hosts who have read it and loved it. Tomorrow night I have a two-hour interview on Knight Rider Radio. Check it out. Also www.rosemarychaulk.com If you look around on the net you can find the book for $11.06.

967345 Hi LJ, Kerryn and everyone in the group!

Not too long ago I was just commenting to a friend of mine about the same thing (the smell of an old book). LOL
It really is...intoxicating.

I too am glad you've discovered this joy, which I discovered many years ago as a young child while searching my grandmother's book collection. I'd like to think it led to some of my more interesting times back then. LOL

Even the search itself was exciting. She had two collections; one that was in her bedroom that we were allowed to roam through freely at any time and the other were her favorite books, kept in this hallway closet that vented their scent through a wood door with venetian slats.
Now, one would think her collections would be the other way around, with the favorites in her bedroom, being such a private spot and all. Oh, no. She wanted them out in the “flow of traffic” so to speak where they were just barely a touch away, behind a locked cupboard; beckoning. She knew how to stir excitement in us, that’s for sure. We hardly ever watched TV at her house when she watched us. Usually it was tea parties, church rummage sales (working and buying LOL), puzzles, letter writing or playing “Back in Time” in the second backyard; but mostly, it was storytime.

If grandpa wasn’t spinning a yarn, grandma was telling us how it was to grow up in her time. Somehow, her and gramps stories, made up or true, led to one of the books in the closet. Afterwards, she’d unlock it and we’d have fun trying to find which book they were secretly directing us to.
It was like finding a treasure over and over again each time she unlocked the door for us. We’d usually find something else that caught our eye as well, so we’d get to pick out two books at a time. One to read right then, and one to take home with us if we chose to. Sometimes, I’d leave it there just because I knew that I’d have it waiting for me the next time I visited and there was a good chance they’d read it with me. Other times, I couldn’t even wait to get home to dive in; I had to start reading it in the car on the way home. LOL

I’ve continued the tradition somewhat with my kids. I don’t have a locked closet, but we have a large bookshelf in the dining room, one upstairs and one in the girls’ room. The one in the dining room has doors on it and behind those doors are tons of books (and puzzles). There’s always something for someone on one of the shelves.

Since the school week makes it difficult to find time to allow them to devote their attention to extracurricular things, we have game day (video for day, board for night) on Saturday’s and story night (where we all share a story) on Sunday’s. This way, the whole week is spent on studies and the weekend is fun time. They really look forward to and appreciate game day since they aren’t allowed to play video games during the week. With 7 kids, it’s hard to balance a fair portion of time to video games that doesn’t make each them feel like they aren’t getting enough time to play. It’s a little easier now that we only have 6 at home now. The oldest wasn’t crazy about the arrangement, but now that he’s out on his own, he said it actually helped teach him how to manage his time more wisely. It’s nice to know when you’ve done something right. *smile
We usually give them half an hour, sometimes an hour, splitting it into two game times. So, while they may feel hindered at gaming, they know they have free reign to read for as long as they want once studies are done. It’s worked out great ever since we started doing it four years ago and they’re all becoming wonderful storytellers. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll be lucky enough to see one of theirs on a store shelf! *smile

I used to have books sent to me at work until one day the receptionist walked by my office and saw me with a used book open, held to my nose, eyes closed, inhaling deeply. "What are you doing?" asked the receptionist. I laughed and said "There is nothing like the small of an old book." LOL The copy you found of Wuthering Heights sound wonderful.

I kept the adoration of literature, though--I read all the time, always have a book with me. One of my friends referred me to http://www.booksfree.com , which is where I get most of my books these days. It saves me a RIDICULOUS amount of money. I just got two parcels tonight, in fact, and am going to be reading Emily Ever After once I finish the last few pages of Across the Nightingale Floor. 971945 Bookaholics Pledge
Hi, my name is Kathy and I'm a bookaholic. I have read too many books to count for too many years. I seek no cure, for there is none. I read yesterday, I'm reading today, and I will read tomorrow. My addiction is books. I must read to live and live to read. This admission is no secret to family and friends, and so I continue to be an addict with no remorse.
The above pledge is from the group I started on Facebook in 2007, conveniently entitled Bookaholics. I encourage those of you with FB accounts to join us. I find so much enjoyment and comfort in reading. It has certainly been a great help in transitioning from active mom to empty nest. Who has time to be sad? With so many books waiting to be read, I will always be busy and content. My main decorative item in my house is books, of course. The only rooms without books are the two bathrooms. Hmm, I need to rectify that.

My favorite book (series) is the Twilight series! I love finding bargain book sites and stores and I always go to my local library to check the free shelf. The other day there were a few teen hardcover books, cookbooks and a chicken soup for the sould book! I just get really excited about free books :D I'm a great person and I'd really like to be your friend! What are some recently read books that you like?

Nophoto-f-25x33 Hi, I'm Kathy and new to this group and pretty new to Goodreads itself. I am a true bookaholic. Whenever I'm not doing anything else, and often even when I am, I am reading a book. Almost all the books I read are audio books, so that increases my availability of time to read as you can read audio books while doing almost anything else-well except working, of course. I am an attorney and I work for Legal Aid in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I belong to another book group in yahoo called 4 Mystery Addicts, of which there are currently over 1000 members. I finish a book just about every two days. I keep a journal of every book I read because in my other group we post our titles and small reviews of the books we've read for the month. My main interest is mysteries, but also contemporary fiction, memoirs, true crime, nonfiction about contemporary events, although I've finally drawn a close to reading more books about the upcoming election. I am a lesbian, and I've had the same partner for 29 years, and probably will for the next 29 years if we both are alive that long. My family lives to be old, so I probably will be. I'm 58 now and my partner is 56. Well that's enough about me. Happy reading to all.
Kathy H. in Minneapolis,

Hello~

I'm Ella and I just turned 20 last month. I live in Finland and it's getting pretty damn cold here. I like to read and I love books, I'm a student and I put more than I should into books. I don't have any pets or babied yet, but I went to see some kittens yesterday and now one of them is mine! I just have to wait about a month for it to grow up.
