1494961 Just wanted to agree with Teri...I love East of Eden too! I would like to reread it again someday, even though I just read it a few years ago. Awesome book! I haven't read Grapes of Wrath yet, but it is on my TBR list.

700236 Allison I actually liked Snow Flower better than Peony but both good. I have another one you might like after that which is not very well known but good: The Secrets of Jin-shei by Alma Alexander. Oh and I hope you have read Memoirs of a Geisha already too that is a must read. (the movie didn't do it justice)

message 35: by KrisT (new)

700236 Ashley is A northern light the Donnelly book? If so have you read her first two of the Rose trilogy?? Both really good if you like family saga type books.

Oh and i am moving Cranford up on my list. I picked it up a library sale and want to get to it.

10818 In the order in which I read them:

Eat, Pray, Love
The Glass Castle
The Shack

Tera - East of Eden is one of my three all-time favorite classic novels. For me, it is Steinbeck's best; better written even than Grapes of Wrath. His use of literary devices and descriptive language really came together in this novel. I fell in love with it when I was in high school, and have again the 3 more times I've read it since then. (And I always find new things to love.)

1494961 My favorite from this year would be A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Although I am proud of myself for reading & finishing Crime & Punishment and The Pillars of the Earth.

message 32: by Allison (new)

276475 Maureen, I'm definitely moving Snow Flower up to the top of my to-read list because I finished Peony in Love recently, and I thought it was incredible! Have you read that one by Lisa See?

message 31: by Beth (new)

645979 So, I've been following this thread for the last 16 hours and I'm having the hardest time coming up with an answer! Mostly because I liked almost everything I read, and "really liked" or "loved" a big number of those.

I think as I look back at 2008, I have to say that the best thing of my year is that I branched outside the fantasy realm.

Up until this year, I pretty much read Charles de LInt de Lint; Charles with a few miscellaneous books thrown in the mix. But this year, I read a ton of new authors, and not many were fantasy!
