Whether you are a student or staff member, this is a pretty stressful time of year. Budget cuts. Final exams. Family gatherings. AHHHHHHH!!!
What book do you read for instant relaxation? Think of it as an antidote to life.
My favorite Read to Relax title is Jamberry by Bruce Degen.Okay. It's a kids book. But you can't argue against the sedative power of lines like: "Mountains and fountains rain down on me/Buried in berries/What a jam jamboree!"
Just Shy of Harmony I love books that make you laugh. Philip Gulley's series do that very thing for me. His books are filled with loveable characters; however my favorite is Dale Hinshaw and his personal ministry of the Scripture-eggs to help people get off to a good start each morning. Each time I think of all the work and the results it just makes me smile.
Japanese manga - whatever 3 or 4 series I am working on at the moment. Generally I prefer the light, romantic shojo series, but sometimes I'll read an adverture one like Bleach or Trinity Blood. Plus I get the bonus of 9 year old boys and 14 yr old girls telling me I am a really cool librarian ;-)
My read to relax book would be a cozy British mystery whether written by an American or a Brit. I reread Agatha Christie from time to time, but my current favorite authors are Carola Dunn, Emily Brightwell, and Kate Kingsbury. Recently, I have discovered Charles Finch's A Beautiful Blue Death and Rhys Bowen's Her Royal Spyness.
I am reading Her Royal Spyness right now and am really enjoying it. I love the details like the funny nicknames and the lengthy surnames. It is light, but intellegent with a slightly wicked sense of humor.

With a spot of tea, perhaps?

It is a bit saucy at times! Though she is wantng to be independent, reality sets in when she must do without a servant, live in a cold house until she learns to light a fire, and must find a job. The scene when she interacted with her mother at the department store was quite funny. I am looking forward to more in the series. Have you read either of Rhys Bowen's other series - Constable Evans or Molly Murphy? I haven't.

Absolutely! A comfortable chair and a cozy blanket would complete the picture. In fact, I think I'll go home right now and read, drink tea, and enjoy the Christmas tree! LOL.
This is the first one I have read. You recommended it to Bille who then passed it on to me.
Yes, her mother was funny. I wather like poor Twistam, too.
My read to relax book would have to be The Hobbit. I've read it so many times that its just comfortable.

All the magic of the other Middle Earth books but not nearly has challenging. Are you at all excited about the prospect of the movie? See details at Internet Movie Database.
Over the break, I read the Twilight series. Fun, relaxing and interesting. Even a little deep in spots.
I am on the fourth book of the Twilight series and I love them. I don't know what I'll do when I'm finished...........

Not only because of the story, but I don't have much of an obligation in my head to finish or read it in order. I will admit that shougos are relaxing, but I have to say I'm a yaoi fangirl so I'd rather read that. It's still romantic drama either way, but most mangas are either romance or action.
I have to agree with Stephanie--whatever I'm currently reading is generally what I find relaxing--just b/c I love to read. That said, my tendency in reading is toward the "light and fluffy", so that may have some bearing on this. If a book is a struggle for me to read on an emotional level? It probably won't stay on my reading list--or else will wait until I'm "up" for whatever it is.
Whenever I dont want to try reading a new book and I feel like reading something I know is good, I read the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones, I love when you are reading a series and you own all the books to it because you can basically just pick up the next book without really stopping...
