Cheesy Romance Novel Covers
So, I have this amazing little scifi/fantasy bookstore by my house and am always chatting up the owner about what I'm reading. Earlier this evening, I was trying to explain how I picked up The Iron Duke thinking it would just be a bodice-ripper, only to discover that the writing and world-building is excellent and I'm taking it seriously despite itself. And then he looks up the cover on his laptop and it becomes that much harder to defend it as legit literature! ;)
ABS FOR NO REASON.
I've heard plenty of good things about Iron Duke, so I might have to pick it up sometime. The steampunk aspect is just a bonus. Second the laugh @ ABS FOR NO REASON.
Not a cover but this talks about 10 things to make a cheesy cover for romance novels: http://psd.tutsplus.com/articles/insp...

The cover, however is just SO EFFING BAD LOL
@Felicia -- Just finished Iron Duke with a mighty squeeee of joy and satisfaction. Now, to finish the other book that's been haunting my 'currently reading' list. Not quite a literary masterpiece, this one . . .
MOARRRR KILLLLTS!!!!!111 (my berserker warcry)

It aroused him to see her wrapped in his clan colors -- nothing could have marked her as his so completely. He felt his kilt begin to rise with the stirrings of desire. This stuff writes itself. Where is my book deal?
I really love Lady of The Glen by Jennifer Roberson. It's a novel about 17Th-Century Scotland and the Massacre of Glencoe and I don't even classify it under bodice-ripper but I do love the romance in it. That's why I was truly annoyed with this cheesy cover.

It took a moment to realize you were NOT quoting the book ROTFL!
I don't really have a thing for Kilts really but after hearing about the Iron Duke - I'm ABS-olutely grabbing that one to read.
LMFAO! KIIILLLTS!! If ever there was an article of clothing IDEAL for this genre, it's a kilt. It seriously kills me though how he looks so uninterested when she's practically swooning! We should also add "Cheesy blurbs" to this section cause "only her gentle love could gentle his savage soul" is effing crackin' me up!
"Oh KIT! The way your wrap my sheer curtains around your splendid, muscular physique ... it's so BRAZEN."

Karen Marie Moning has a high level of kilt commitment. And hey! There's an article!
Edit: We are totally on the verge of starting a Vaginal Fantasy Hangout kilt meme . . .
Seriously, what's up with these covers. Maybe it's because I'm old, but they really don't do anything for me. It's not a matter of them being embarrassing, I couldn't care less, but it's just, come on. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!?
This is one of the best that almost made it to print (from SBTB)
Once you see it... you can't unsee it.
Bonus round? Find the extra arm Castles in the Air
I have found an issue with transferring to ebooks and missing out on the outrageous covers. Granted my iPad has a fantastic cover but ... it doesn't have a kilt. =(
So completely unrelated to the book, they seemed to fix the covers as the series went along. I'm glad I gave the series a chance in spite of the cover.
Other ridiculous covers for entertaining books:

I was totally blown away when I finally picked it up. It started my love of steampunk.
Oh my! You ladies have found some really great #absfornoreason! I will often pass on these books because I'm too embarrassed to purchase them. I think that's why they came out with dual covers. You know, the ones where the author/editor/publisher/reader is too embarrassed to be seen with the cover art, so they put a slightly smaller page on top. On Goodreads they show up with a small band of solid color on the right side. Here's one I have on my shelf.
Did anyone watch the "Mr Romance" show? I think it aired in 2005 or something. The winner got to be on the cover of a romance-novel. It was pretty hilarious.
there's a funny blog called Judge a Book by its Cover.I think it's sort of abandoned now - not sure. At any rate, she posted great romance covers, including this one:

her commentary is funny too - at http://judgeabook.blogspot.ca/2011/01...
All these covers seem to play up to some warped notion that this is the kind of guy women want. Sadly all most women seem to do is laugh at them.

Holy crap that's funny.

Awesome, Vanessa. Simply awesome.
I worked in a used bookstore all through high school (almost a decade ago) and 90% of what I shelved every day was Romance. And I noticed a trend: a good number of them that showcased a shirtless man on the cover (and just the man), they would cover up his abs with HUGE text, as if the sight of his bare abdomen was too scandalous to behold.
And I don't know why, but this one makes me laugh every time I see it:
I.... just.... what is he doing? Exulting in his own ab-ness?

and people question why men don't read romance?

"I believe I can fly... I believe I can touch the sky.."
"Interpretive DAAAAANNNCE!"
"AAAUUUGH! Hand cramp!!"
Guy: Hey! Demon Giant! How many fingers am I holding up?
Demon Giant: Ummm. Three?
Guy: Two you moron! Two fingers and one thumb! *I* can tell how many there are, and my EYES ARE CLOSED! Suck it, idiot hell spawn!"
Demon Giant: Nice undewear, loser. You forgot your pants again.
Guy: NOOOOOOOOOO!
