It has to be Michael Fassbender. That's all I could think while I was reading the book. He'd be perfect.

Agree! wait, there's a movie?"Well, the rights were sold. I'm mainly talking theoretically, should have clarified that.
There is supposed to be a movie. I just read a facebook page for Shadow of Night, the Discovery of Witches sequeal, where Debroah Harkness said she saw a screen treatment (sort of like an outline of a script) by Pulitzer Prize winning playwrite David Auburn and apparently she is excited.I think Fassbender wouldn't be too bad, I just wonder if he isn't a little too young looking for Matthew? Maybe sombody a little older. Any suggestions?
As I was reading through this awesome book. Only one face came to mind. John Barrowman. Aka Captain Jack Harknesshttp://www.imdb.com/media/rm256249369...
I did love him as Captian Jack Harkness and he would make an OK Matthew. However, Jim Caviezel is still my pick.
Barrowman - That could be interesting. I'm a huge fan of his, actually. I don't think he has the intensity of Fassbender though.

Colin Firth had a wonderful broody persona as Mr. Darcy in "Pride and Prejudice" yet can play light and funny as well.
because apparently the cast has to be British, i actually recommend Luke Evans for the part. He just seems like a Mathew :P The others are really good suggestions too!! But i have my fingers crossed that it will be Luke Evans because he is just so awesome. I really liked the books and have high hopes that the movies will be just a good, and maybe a little more epic :D
well that's the best news I've heard in a while. Discovery of Witches was my fav novel of 2011 and I think it will make an awesome film.
My vote would go to Richard Armitage. I still can't pick a Diana but I think an unknown might be the best option.
Jenny wrote: "My vote would go to Richard Armitage. I still can't pick a Diana but I think an unknown might be the best option."Oh yeah. He was pretty good in Robin Hood as Guy of Gisborne, but I think he is in the middle of making the Hobbit movies. Might not be available anytime soon.

Foxessa, thanks for that info about the screenplay. Very exciting! I hope it gets made. I think the book was quite cinematic.
Hmmm.... I can see Clive Owen in the role. Definitely.
Bethany said Luke Evans and I must agree, he has an amazing singing voice and Mathew does a bit of singing, and he looks amazingly sexy with slicked back hair! I couldn't help but imagine him the whole time I was reading the book! He's only in his early thirties, and I think Mathew is supposed to look that age? But anyway, check him out on imbd, he's amazing! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1812656/
Yes! A Luke Evans supporter! You've got good taste ;) There's only one issue with Luke Evans: do you think he can pull of french? I mean, he is welsh not french or anything like that?
Yeah....well, if he can't play Mathew then I'd like to see him as Dominic :P I just want to see him in the film! Michael Fassbender would be an excellent Mathew :) They'd go well together.
I would vote Richard Armitage (from the BBC series North & South). But I would be okay with Michael Fassbender too :) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0035514/
Yeah, I agree as well, Richard Armitage does look just like how I pictured Matthew too. Funny. Never heard of the actor though, is he good?

I totally agree. :)
Didn't really like any of the suggestions I have looked up so far. Jim Caviezel looks a bit too sleazy in my opinion (I apologize for the choice of words but can't think of a more polite word for this right now), Fassbender looks more vulnerable than I would have imagined Matthew to be. I agree with a previous comment that an unknown or less know actor would probably be best.I would have thought that a dark / sinister character would depict him best. But there aren't too many of that type around I suppose.
I just looked up Richard Armitage and he is the only one I could imagine in that role so far. How about Olivier Martinez ? - Another French guy who looks like he could be a good sinister vampire.
