1571381 I like Fulghum's books too. One anecdote in Uh-oh - Some Observations From Both Sides Of The Refrigerator Door just about made me pee my pants, though (regarding the airplane and the ashes).

1492716 Thanks jzhunagev,
I never heard of him but I will check his work out. Thanks for responding. I appreciate everyone's support.

1662951 Well this seems to be a little bit out dated, but I find whenever I read Robert Fulghum's books so heart-warming and delighting. It's good to start with his first book "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten". What I like the most in that book is an essay/character sketch on Mother Teresa. I always go back to Fulghum just for the sheer fun of reading his work which is quite refreshing for me. Try it and find yourself out of your doldrums.

1492716 Wow so you are about 15 hours ahead. Ive never been to Seattle but I hear it rains a lot. We have many more sunny days here in CA. The only thing I can think of is the movie Sleepless in Seattle but I dont know if there is a book also. Yes, I hope things get better every where. I wish everyone could just be at peace and get along. You have a nice day then.

1175201 Kelly,

I'm not in politics either but the situation just makes me have to think.
Anyway, It's not the end of the world. Like I told you everything will be all right again ...I hope.

I check your profile and found that you are in CA. Once I studied in Pacific area not in CA but in WA, Seattle. That's where I read a lot of English books. Actually, I'm thinking about finding a book with Seattle setings, must be fun.

Oh, Here in Bangkok is at noon on Friday. I guess the Pacific time would be around 9pm?

Well, Have a good night.

message 34: by Kelly (new)

1492716 You are so far from the United States. I am finding friends and feeling comforted here as well. Its nice isnt it? I dont keep up with politics. Never been my thing. Today was nice, partly cloudy with some sunshine and no rain. Im on Pacific time so what time is it there?
Ever been over here?

message 33: by pilarcat (new)

1175201 Thank you Petra :-)

I'm Thai living in Bangkok, Thailand, Kelly.

The political situation here is not very nice. I'm glad I can seek comfort here. Well, at least today's weather 's very good with bright blue sky. Hope you have a nice weather at your home:-)

message 31: by Kelly (new)

1492716 Thank you again Pilarcat. Do you mind if I ask what country you are in? Have a great day.

message 30: by Petra X (new)

1237196 Hi there Pilarcat. Welcome. :-)

message 29: by pilarcat (new)

1175201 Kelly , I'm glad that my words help you somehow (hopefully?)
In my country, we don't have Thanksgiving but I wish you a great holiday!

Atishay ,Thanks! I got the 'Pilar' name from my teacher in Spanish class at school. The meaning is like 'pillar' in English. He said it suited me because I was quite tall compare to other students. Then I added my nickname which meant 'cat' in English so it became Pilarcat

Happy to hear you like it :-)

1530627 Kelly, No1 ladies' detective agnecy by Alexander McCall smith

message 25: by Kelly (new)

1492716 Jeane thank you so much for responding. You have a great holiday. Is it NO 1 detective agency?

message 24: by pilarcat (new)

1175201 The question lingered in my mind for some time last month when I was very depressed and tried to find something uplifting. Too bad, I just found this group today when I already snapped out of it. So, you see, kelly, whatever makes you feel bad right now will be gone some day and I'm sure people here will be there for you.

I wish all the best for you. Smile!

Oh, The book I would go to is something about childrn like Mary Poppins or Winnie-the-Pooh

The Latter one is so warmhearted and really cute!

message 23: by Jeane (new)

1530627 Kelly, maybe also The ladies' no1 detective agency. I find them very funny but mixed with a nice story too.

message 22: by Kelly (new)

1492716 Thank you Kellie. I have a feeling that making friends as well as finding new books to explore and read is going to help a lot. Im so glad I found all of you on Goodreads. Have a happy holiday too.

1394928 You are in the right place, Kelly! We help each other here at TNBBC, and we are a friendly group.

I can highly recommend this one that someone else mentioned, but here's the link:

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

It is very heartwarming, a terrific read, and now one of my top 5 all-time reads. It takes place in WWII, so it's not ALL hearts and flowers, but the happy and uplifting parts way outweigh the sad parts. There is also a romance subplot that feels like a black-and-white-movie, so if you like the old-fashioned kind of love story, you'll enjoy this one.

Also, the Mitford series by author Jan Karon. The first is At Home in Mitford.

This entire series is terrific. It follows the life of an Episcopal priest, who is in his mid-60's and a bachelor when we meet him. He lives in a small mountain town in NC, where everyone knows everyone, and they really believe in taking care of each other.

I think you'll enjoy it!

The Sue Grafton alphabet mysteries someone mentioned are also terrific, the first is A is for Alibi. They are laugh out loud funny, and will definitely suck you in and keep you reading right from the beginning.

All of Jane Austen's books are terrific, they all take place in the 1800's, and have a romance aspect to them.

These will definitely get you smiling again, Kelly! Take care, and keep your chin up. Remember: this too shall pass.

:)

1492716 Thanks Chrystal, Jensownzoo, and Jeane with your ideas. Wow Im getting some great suggestions. Maybe friends is what will help me through this.I think Im in the right place.

message 17: by Jeane (new)

1530627 The stephanie plum serie might be a good kind of books. Good luck with everything!

message 16: by Jensownzoo (new)

1571381 If you like medical thrillers at all, you may give one of the books by Eileen Dreyer a try. Her protagonists are generally females in the medical field.

message 15: by Chrystal (new)

1564366 I suggest anything by Dorothea Benton Frank. I love her writing....very funny with loads of Southern humor.

message 14: by Kelly (new)

1492716 Thanks to you as well Atishay. I am writing everyone's ideas down. This should keep me busy and my mind on other things.

message 13: by Kelly (new)

1492716 Thank you Kellie. I have seen your suggestions. You can get lost on this site so easily. Wow! Thanks again so much.

message 12: by Atishay (new)

1595626 Try The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. It's a very engrossing read.
Another option is The Hour Game by David Baldacci, its about serial murderer, a fast read and very, very engrossing.
You can also try one of the Jeffrey Archer's Kane and Abel. It's not exactly a mystery but a great book to get your mind out of other things.
If you're looking for something inspirational, try Seabiscuit.
Be tough and hang in there. The time will pass by.

message 11: by Kellie (new)

842772 oohh Kelly! Hang in there.
I have posted my suggestions on a couple threads but...

Fannie Flagg-(anything)

Stephanie Plum Series-Janet Evanovich-(start with One for the Money)

A Walk in the Woods-Bill Bryson

Bright Lights Big Ass-Jen Lancaster

Are a few I recommend to chear you up !

message 10: by Kelly (new)

1492716 Thank you Michelle. I will definitely looks at the books you suggested. Thanks for your support. Happy Holiday.

message 9: by Kelly (new)

1492716 Thank you Lori for your kind words. I really appreciate your help. Have a great holiday.

message 8: by Michelle (new)

1553207 That's so tough Kelly, hang in there!!

Read Marley Me, it's funny and sweet.

I also thought The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was a pretty good little escape book.

If you like mysteries, try Sue Grafton's alphabet series. They're up to "T" right now so that's a lot of books to keep you reading!

Good luck!

369169 Kelly, wow. What a tough situation. In time everything will straighten itself out. In the meantime, you have us as your pillow/comforter/whathaveyou.....

1492716 HI LORI AND TO ALL WHO RESPONDED,
THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.WELL HERE GOES THE SHORT VERSION OF WHATS GOING ON. ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO MY MOM GOT SICK AND I MOVED AWAY FROM MY HUSBAND AND TWO OLDER DAUGHTERS TO TAKE CARE OF HER. DURING THAT TIME MY HUSBAND LOST OUR HOME, A RENTAL, BUT STILL. MY MOM IS FULLY RECOVERED NOW AND WE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING ALONG. MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER WHO IS 16 CAME WITH ME AND IS STILL WITH ME. SO BASICALLY IM HOMESICK AND LONELY AND NOT GETTING ALONG WITH MY MOM WHO I USED TO CONSIDER MY FRIEND, NOT ONLY MY MOM. SO WHAT I NEED IS A BOOK TO GET ME OUT OF THIS DEPRESSED STATE IM IN. I ALSO JUST GOT MY PHLEBOTOMY LICENSE AND IM TRYING TO FIND A JOB. THANKS AGAIN TO ALL OF YOU. IM SO GLAD I FOUND YOU ON GOODREADS. TAKE CARE.

1356469 The Secret Countess/The Morning Gift by Eva Ibbotson - she's guaranteed happy ending! She's also YA so I don't know if Kellie likes that or not.

Uhm... happy books, happy books...

Anything by Diana Wynne Jones - specially Howls Moving Castle and Dogsbody. They're YA again, but light reads that are quite funny and easy to read.

I Capture the Castle- Dodie Smith. A lovely positive read that makes you feel warm and joyous inside.

message 4: by Dorie (new)

1412216 Anything by Jasper Fforde would work as well. I'm especially fond of his Nursery Crimes series, but I think I'm in the minority there. Most prefer the Thursday Next series, starting with The Eyre Affair. But for me, I liked The Big Over Easy.

message 3: by Jackie (new)

1176067 Well when I need a good laugh I usually turn to Christopher Moore. Lori suggested The Stupidest Angel, which is good for the holidays. I also recommend Lamb, A Dirty Job and You Suck. These had me laughing out loud.

If you want light-hearted funny chick lit I would recommend The Shopaholic Series. There is a movie being made on the first book, which is due to come out next year I believe.

message 2: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

369169 Well, for Kelly, we might need to know what sort of "troubles" she is having. I dont want to suggest a book about guys if she is having man troubles, or a book that contains a character that dies, if she is greiving.....

If she just wants plain silliness and an interesting read, try one of these:

The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror, Version 2.0
Gil's All Fright Diner
Dead Until Dark
The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse

message 1: by Jensownzoo (new)

1571381 Kelly has tried several times to post this in the right spot, so I thought I'd give her a break and do it for her so we can get rolling on some suggestions.

Here is what she has posted:

Hi Everyone,
I am fairly new and dont know if this the proper place to ask for suggestions but here goes. I am really down in the dumps and would love anyone to recommend a book or books that would get my mind off my problems. Im open to suggestions. Thanks Kelly
