Switching from the print to audio saved Just Kids for me. While I still don't care much about the NY art scene, listening to Smith read made the text enjoyable. I think it was the accent.

I've tried mightily to keep an open mind during this second reading of this book. I have reached the conclusion that if one is not a big Patti Smith fan, or fascinated by the minutiae of the New York art scene during this time period, this book is just kinda boring. I hope somebody in the group loves it so we have something to discuss.

I've had a bit of fun reading additional information about the events that Patti lived through and the people she spent time with. Also been listening to some of the music from the artists she's mentioned (Dylan, Hendrix, etc). If I hadn't been cross-referencing and reading only a few pages at a time I'm not sure I would have liked the book on its own.
Here's a link to some of Patti's poetry readings from the 70's:

I was so excited, but I can't even get to page 75 without dreading picking it up every time I do. Ugh.

I've found this Fresh Air interview more compelling than the book so far:

There's a good sort of biographical review essay in the NY Review of Books:

Still reading, but so far meh. I want to like this book and I am not too keen on critiquing someone's life - it's their life. As of page 96, I have not been able to empathize nor connect with her yet considering her Chicago roots, her struggles, etc.
