1395058 Are there any non-fiction books on the amazing lives of French figures pre-1970? I'm not looking for very mainstream names such as Napoleon, but someone more out of the way yet fascinating, so I can expand my knowledge of French culture.

Merci!

259402 J'ai lu un bon livre en anglais sur De Gaulle, je pense que c'etait ecrit par Charles Williams.

324433 Jean Jacques Rousseau is interesting. You can also learn a lot about him, fictionally, by reading Alexandre Dumas. Dumas is fascinating too, of course.

2185083 You can check out novels of Emile Zola and especially the Rougon-Macqaurt, which is about 20 books, undertitled "Histoire naturelle et sociale d'une famille sous le Second Empire" ;-)
