1436056 Well so far I have read 51 this year that I have kept track of. Once I joined I started putting in books that I have read this year, but not all of them have been put in, plus I read alot that my friend gave me to read. We share books. She will get books she thinks I would enjoy so she loans them to me to read and I loan books to her to read, so those books I have not counted.
So I think my by calculations I have read almost a 100 or a little over so far in 2008, but this group will help me keep a record and I can be sure of how many. I usually read about 2 a week.

1436056 Your more than welcome ;-)
I have a little over a 1000 books well not all reading books. I have old Opera Books and Old Music Books. I love my Old Stephen Foster Music Book. My MIL was a music teacher and I have about 12 yrs of Nationl Geographic Magazines. I learn alot from them very educational.

message 5: by Kay, Your Humble Servant (new)

290438 Wow, that's fascinating. I was a music major for the first two years in college (piano performance major), so I've got quite a lot of music books, too. And those National Geographic magazines are quite the collection! Again - wow!

message 6: by Lynn (new)

1436056 Thatas so interesting. My MIL and FIL both taught music, piano and organ, My husband plays both .His grandfather taught voice and opera so they are all from a musical family.

I love the National Geographic. I still have all the maps in them and they look like they were just received in the mail. 90% of my books were inherited from my FIL and MIL and my husbands grandparents on his fathers side.

They came from England so I have a lot of books from there a very large Charles Dickens Library.one large shelf of Poetry(which I love to read) I have a first edition Old Man and the Sea one of my favorites. All these will be passed on to my children so the books will have a large history behind them.

1436056 The Heart Of Thornton Creek-Bonnie Leon
Book 1-The Queensland Chronicles

This series takes place in Queensland Australia.
Rebecca Williams is a strong willed woman , and when she marries Daniel Thornton, she is not really in love with him as they move to Australia to the large cattle ranch run by his father.

His father is one that rules his family, ranch and the whole town as did his father, according to the ways of the Bible. He considers himself a strong man of God.

That is until he meets Daniels wife whom he can have no control over. Will she fall in love with her husband eventually, will his old flame win out in a scheme to get him back or will she leave Australia and return to Boston thereby letting her Father in law get the best of her and her marriage.

Will her father in law finally see where he is going wrong and learn the correct way to interpret the scripture.

A great lesson learned that you must know God in your heart not just with mind knowledge

A book that brought tears as I read it

1436056 For The Love of the Land-Bonnie Leon
Book 2-The Queensland Chronicles

Continuing on with the saga of Daniel and Rebecca and the Thorton Ranch. Daniel has the responsibility of running the ranch .

Some may think there are a lot of dramatics in the story line and yes there is to some extent, but if you read between the lines and delve into it what you will see is that God will reign on the just and the injust alike. No one is except from trouble.

As they fight off the drought, fires and it anything else that could go wrong, the point is have faith in God that he will pull you through.

Will they survive the territory and make a go of everything. Only as I begin book 3 the final in the series will I know.

1436056 When The Storm Breaks-Bonnie Leon
Book 3-The Queensland Chronicles.

The final book in the series and after a devasting drought and fire, they must go on. But to rebuild you need money.
But what happens when the bank will not give you a loan.

In this continuing saga, Daniel know what he should do and turn it over to God, but as always the nature of man does not wait for a answer. Will they save there beloved ranch(or in Australia as they are called Station)or will they finally lose it and have to leave.

I have enjoyed this whole series, and if a person reads deeper than just as a novel there is a lesson to be learned throughout.

1436056 I just finished reading all 3 books in the Fountain Creek Chronicles.
I enjoyed each and ever one immensly.

In the late 1860s, Colorado Territory is a wild and untamed land. But nestled within its mountains and sustained by one of its major creeks, three couples carve out a new life on the frontier. Forging a living in the shadow of icy peaks, each person will be called upon to stand on nothing more than faith, sacrifice single-minded desires, risk what is most dear to them, and turn away from the past in order to detect God's plan for the future. By the time Colorado becomes a state, will they be united by love or defeated by adversity?

Book 1-Rekindled

When her husband disappears into a mountain snowstorm one morning, Kathryn Jennings is flung into the world of ranching, banking, and business. Penniless and pregnant, Kathryn is determined to keep her land as a legacy for her child. The man who offers her a job seems to have an awful lot of secrets, but she is desperate. Most disconcerting of all is the uncanny familiarity she feels toward the badly scarred ranch hand who works in the dark shadows of the horse stables.

Book 2-Revealed

Annabelle Grayson has been given a second chance at life, but she can’t claim it with the cloud of her past hanging over her in Willow Springs. After her husband dies, she advertises for a trail guide to accompany her to land waiting for her in Idaho--and a most unlikely candidate applies for the job.
Matthew Taylor is a man on the run, with consequences of past mistakes pursuing him at every turn. Meeting Annabelle Grayson the first time was unpleasant enough, but when she crosses his path again, her presence in his life--and what she reveals--is devastating. If given a single wish, Matthew would turn back time and right a grievous wrong. If given a second wish, he would make Annabelle Grayson pay.

Book 3-Remembered

In book 3 of the Fountain Creek Chronicles, Veronique Girard sets off to Colorado Territory from France after the death of her mother. She is searching for her father, who set off to make his fortune in American as a fur trader twenty-five years ago. Unfamiliar with the language, customs, and the land, Veronique sets out on a dangerous journey to find a man she doesn't remember and answers to her questions.
Jack Brennan has been working himself to death for the past fifteen years as a wagon guide to block out the pain of his wife and son's death. Now, he is ready to settle down in Willow Springs. When he is thrown together unexpectedly with Veronique, he becomes involved with her quest to find her father, but that is not the only way she has the potential to change his life.

Book 1- takes you right to the very end wondering . Kathern buries her husbans, but did he really die? In her heart she still feels he is alive even tho they had the funeral. This book takes you through 10 months of her trying to save the ranch her husband so wanted for them, from the brothel to the work place.
If you read Francine Rivers Redeeming Love you will enjoy these also.

Book2- Ride along with Annabelle as she trecks across country after leaving the brothel only to be tormented by the trail guide who knows her past.

Book 3- Seems almost like it was a different series all together but really it wasn't It also was a very good read of the series.

1436056 I just finished reading "Waiting For Summers Return"-Kim Vogel Sawyer.
Review from Christian Book . com

Summer Steadman finds herself stranded in a small Mennonite town in Kansas in the late 1800’s, after her husband and four young children die of typhoid.
When Summer tries to find a job in the town, widower Peter Ollenburger is the only person, it seems, who is willing to extend her any kindness. He shows up at her hotel to ask if she would stay on his property and tutor to his nine-year-old son. With no family to turn to and determined to stay near her children’s gravesites, she accepts his offer.
There seems to be no attraction between them at first, yet Peter’s neighbors are convinced they are living in sin, even threatening to cast Peter out of the community if he does not send the woman away. Peter refuses to force her to leave, gently but firmly standing up to the suspicious townspeople. Meanwhile, Summer feels deep resentment toward God for refusing to answer her pleas to save the only people in the world that she loves. Peter is determined to show her that God still loves her and has her best interests at heart.

Kim Sawyer turns in a fine writing performance with her strong, deep characters and gentle story. She uses a great depth of insight in treating her subject matter with deftness and truth. Though she is true to the feelings a bereft mother would naturally experience, at no time does the novel sink into despondence. Summer’s reluctance to trust God again, her fear of his answering “no” to all of her prayers, will resonate with anyone who has gone through a tough time.

This is the first book I have read of Ms Sawyer's and now am reading a sequel to it.
This was a very moving and touching story.

1436056 I just finished reading for a review:
The Bargin "Book 1 Finding Home Series"-Catherine Stang
My Review.

During the Civil War, Cassandra Beaumont tries to keep the plantation together.
With her parents no longer around and all 3 brothers off to the war,
What do you do when you have the responsibilities of a taking care of a sister,a
sister-in- law who is expecting a baby anytime and her niece.
The Union Soldiers are taking over the plantation to make it into a hospital, and the women need to leave, or do they?

This was a book that held my interest from the very beginning.
Follow along with this family through their trials and tribulations
with two Union Officers.

There is romantic interludes in the book , but these are not steamy scenes.
If you like Historical Romance Books, then I recommend this book.
BLURB

In the midst of war, two enemies will make a bargain that will change their lives forever.

Major Joel Bradshaw is the Chief Medical Officer in charge of setting up a new front line hospital for the Union Army. Unfortunately, his first task is to evict the women who live in the big plantation house he must commandeer.

Strong-willed Cassandra Beaumont is determined not to allow the Yankees take her home. But when her sister-in-law develops complications during labor, Cassie is forced to swallow her pride and ask the Yankee doctor she just threatened for his help. All she has to barter with are her nursing skills and so she proposes a trade that will bring her loyalties into question.

Joel, however, soon finds himself wanting much more than a business arrangement. Torn between his orders as an officer and his desire to protect Cassie, Joel finds a way to ensure the safety of all the Beaumont women – if only Cassie will say yes!

Sometimes home is where you least expect it.

Sylvia has no life of her own thanks to a domineering mother. All she wants is to run her own life. Sylvia is transported back to the early 13th century, where, as a widow, she and her younger daughter are summoned to King John’s presence on false pretenses. The ladies are about to become the prizes in King John’s jousting tourney.

Faris has spent the last twenty years living with Moors in a peaceful life. He and his son return from a trading trip to find their small oasis settlement burned to the ground. Faris makes a decision to return to England with his son, Halim, where they decide to enter the tourney. Seeing Lady Sylvia stirs long ago memories.

While neither Faris nor Sylvia recall their contemporary lives, they have an opportunity to recapture a past relationship and discover whether or not the heart remembers.

Meredith and Aidan McConnell are on a job, Somewhere back in the Medieval Times
As time travelers

Then there is the hero and Blacksmith Aubrey and heroine Sylvia who seemed to be destined to be together in wherever they were.

As I read this story I had a hard time wondering who was where in what time period. You go along quite some time reading of Faris and Lady Sylvia,
then occasionally you meet up with Meredith and Aidan. Are they time travelers or are they reincarnations, traveling back in their mind. I had to back up a few times to re-read to see where the story was going at that time

As far as the story goes, I really liked it. It was very interesting and I could get quite
involved with the characters .It did well with my imagination as I could, in my mind, visualize many of the scenes going on through out the storyline..

As far as the book goes I thing anyone who likes a sweet simple romance would enjoy this book. For myself it is not a book to read fast so as not to miss the concept /idea of the story

1436056 15. The Blue Bottle Club- Penelope J. Stokes-2-25-09

In the wake of the depression of 1929, four friends gather in a cold, dusty attic on Christmas day to make a solemn pact. "Our dreams for the future," they whisper, as they place tiny pieces of paper holding their life wishes into the blue bottle. Sixty-five years later, local news reporter Brendan Delaney stumbles upon the bottle, discovering the most meaningful story of her career and possibly the meaning missing from her own life.

While I was reading this book, I found so many truths that a person can apply to their own life. This is a wonderful book. As the four friends write out their dreams of the future and make promises to always reamin friends forever,Their lives turn out very differently than what they all had dreamed about on Christmas Eve as teenagers when they committed their written dreams and promises to a blue bottle. But each woman is drawn to God. God uses the circumstances and their dreams in their lives to draw them back and closer to Him--Just like There is so much we can learn from this book if it is read with a open mind and heart There is no bad language or graphic descriptions. I highly recommend this book.
Quoting a quote from long ago.

Lynn, I loved the Blue Bottle Club! I also loved The Amethyst Heart by the same author. Unfortunately, I've not enjoyed some of her more recent novels, but Penelope Stokes is certainly a talented author nonetheless. (One, Delta Belles, bordered on trashy as one young woman's recreational sexual encounter was described in great detail. I was disgusted and quit reading.)

Why is it that ob=ne can write a good story and then turn and write trash. Thanks for the heads up
Thats like Ace of Hearts I jsut read for a review. The mystery was great but they had to fill it with strong sexual parts that could have been wrote a little more subtle and it would not have ruined the story. Others seemed to really like it as they gave it 5 stars

Sparta Tennessee-1860

Rosella was a tomboy from the get go. Of course she would much rather be called Ellie and drop the Rose. That was more like the name of a fine lady. When she was only 3 yrs old she lost her mother to Typhoid, and with no brothers Ellie was compelled to follow her father around.

She had learned to rope, ride, move cattle, and brand as well if not better than some of the ranch hands. She could mend the fences and even occasionally shoe a horse if need be.

But as the years go by, Ellie is 17 and her father decides that she needs to start doing things around the house; inside; woman things, learning to cook, washing. Get out of them denim jeans and wear a dress. How could her father after all these years turn her away from what she loves to do. Why was she not born a boy?

Tyler Bishop (Ty) is the main ranch hand. He has a time trying to figure out Ellie. One time she is one of the guys so speak. Next she is all femimine, All Ty know is he is bound and determined to keep her safe, and also is falling for her.

Ellie is getting tired of Ty bossing her around and being so overly protective of her. Ellie goes out and buys a gun and she will learn to use it.

Ellie knows that one day she will run the ranch? or will her dad turnit over to Ty? When Land buyers want to buy the ranch Ellie is bound and determined to stop it. Will her dad and Ty see things her way.

This is a great novel, and being from Tennessee myself it is beautiful around Sparta.
You can’t help but learn to become involved with the characters. They seem to grow on you.

If you like a good historical romance , then I think you will enjoy this book. The book is wrote with such clarity that it keeps the readers interested. You can’t help but not care about Ellie, and occasionally she will even bring a smile to you.

It is listed as a Western Historical Romance, but I put it more as just Historical, Civil War Era. I found it such a interesting read , that it was hard to put down till it was finished.

Carol Lindsey is the daughter of farming couple born late in their life. Through out her young life you could say kept under the wings of her protected parents, especially her father.

She was a very smart child and through out her school years the teachers really wanted to advance her forward, When she goes off to college she is very naïve about life.
When she meets a successful attorney , flares should have rent up at the beginning but the only flares she was seeing was love.

Through out a rocky 3 yr marriage it finally ends. From there life starts a downhill battle for Carol and her son. Will she be able to afford what she needs to live, keep her son in school, plus try and make a thriving business out of her profession.

The book gets more fascination as you get further into it.
This was well written and did not have a lot of filler to take away from the book.
Even though names have been changed the theme is based on a true story.
After reading the first book of this series, I feel this one is much better written

This is a small book and a easy read, that can be read in a little over a hour for most.

They said it was safe, just as their unit was attacked. Star is captured, along with Wes. Neither of them knew each other. But God seemed intent on them being together.
