Jacqueline Carey will be at my local Barnes & Noble this Friday evening doing a book signing so I will be picking up both Santa Olivia and Naamah' Kiss to get them signed. I'm looking forward to reading both!

Absolutely! This is one of the few books I wish I could live in. In my mind Terre d'Ange is a sort of decadent Eden filled with people who belong on the runway. Everything about this book is beautiful, really -- the prose, most notably. There's an elegance to her writing that I haven't found anywhere else.

Which part of Terre d'Ange would you like to be from?

This is my favorite trilogy. I loved the characters in it! Cannot wait to read Namah's Kiss!

Oh love love love the series. I started out with Kushiel's Scion however and i am not sorry. On to Kushiel's Legacy but i cant get Kushiel's Mercy anywhere!! sickened! then i moved on to kushiel's chosen which was great, but no one as good as Imriel.

I am thinking of getting this series to read (at some point when I have something called TIME). Ya'll helped make that decision with your enthusiasm. I will let you know once I start the series.

No worries Emily, I did the same thing! But once I started I flew through all 6 books one right after the other.

I'm about halfway through Kushiel's Dart right now and am LOVING it!!! I don't know why I had pushed this one so far down the queue, but now I am kicking myself. Great book and glad to hear there are so many to follow!

I saw the 1st at the book store today and nearly picked it up... but I wound up buying he Name of the Wind and The Wayfarer Redemption instead. :|

I have the first three of this series on my tbr pile and I'm looking forward to it. Perhaps I'll read it in the summer after I've caught up on a few of my own WIP.

I'm also looking forward to her interim book Santa Olivia. When I attended a book signing for Kushiel's Mercy, she talked about how she wrote it to "cleanse her palate" between trilogies as she did with Banewreaker and Godslayer between the first 2 trilogys. She almost published it under a pen name because it is so radically different from other things she's written.

This is one of my favorites as well, although I just like the story line in the first trilogy better than the one in the second trilogy. It's not a matter of the 'voice' to me, I'm fine with that.
I won't go into details so as not to put any spoilers in here...

Takes a LOT to make me keep looking for that next book. Auel's series is just enough to keep me interested. It's one of my top 5 favourite series. Jordan's being #1 of course ;)

omg you should try waiting for the next book in Jean M. Auel's Earth Children's Series.... I think Ten Years! lapsed betweeen The Plains of Passage and The Shelters of Stone. It was painful!! And she has yet to add the next book in the 6 book series. I've been waiting a good 6 years at least.

Highly, highly recommended and I am a fussy fantasy reader. I do toss between fantasy and historical fiction and when I get the two combined I'm over the moon. This book, although not based in any real sense of history, gave me that fix because of the sheer brilliance in JC's writing.

Well, I happen to know it's already at the publisher :-) so I think we can count on that date. And I totally agree with you on Martin! He's far too distracted with his hundreds of projects to get the next installment of A Song of Ice and Fire out! He'd planned on having it done a year ago and still hasn't even handed it off to the publisher yet.

I'm anxiously awaiting the next series, she'll be back to a female narrator entitled "Namah's Kiss". According to Carey's website it will be released in June of 2009. On her website she also reveals that she's contributing a short story to a fantasy anthology being put together by George R.R. Martin, "Star-crossed Lovers". Her story will be the love story of Delaunay and Rolande.

I agree. I enjoyed the books from Phedre's point of view much more.

I can say I loved the first series and did not like the second nearly as well. As long as the cat's out of the bag on the narrator of the second series I'd just like to say I don't think she writes a man (from the first person)convincingly at all. This is not to say I didn't enjoy the books but Phedre was a far more believable narrator.

It's on my bedside table as we speak. My only problem is I'm such a slooooow reader, everyone else will be finished way before I'd even gotten through the first half. Oh well...

Not in the least! At least I didn't think so. They probably get this description due to the main character in the first trilogy being an "anguisette" one who is a submissive in assignations. I, personally, did not feel as though it was pornographic at all. In fact, I've read romance novels that were not even defined as erotica that were far more pornograhic.

The world Carey built for these novels is a rich fantasy world where the religion is somewhat unusual in that sex is a form of worship, but I did not get the feeling that this was just a way to insert such scenes. The way in which it was written did not make me feel uncomfortable. I rather took it for what was acceptable in that world. Had this story taken place in present day San Francisco, I might have felt otherwise, but it seemed perfectly natural for the world of Terre d'Ange.

I've not read these - but to me, from what I've heard it is more soft porn than fanasy. Is this true?

Ooops! Sorry Robert, but the fact that you said "people always say" tells me I wasn't the first to do that *blush*. I found out before I finished reading Avatar by reading book cover synopsis. It actually didn't spoil it for me as much as I'd feared though.

I think one of the most attractive things about this series is that it's obvious how much Carey enjoys writing about her characters and how much she loves Terre d'Ange. It gives the books an impact that's missing from a lot of fiction (certainly, IMO, from her own Banewreaker series).

Terre d'Ange - one of the fantasy lands I not only would want to visit but actually live there :-)

I'm still in the middle of book 3, Kushiel's Avatar. I haven't been giving myself a lot of time to read lately. I just finished what I'd imagine is the first major plot point in the story. I can't wait to get to the rest because that was the part I was more interested in.

Also, it kind of irks me that people always say that the second trilogy is from Imriel's POV. In my mind that's a spoiler. I didn't want to know that before I was done with Avatar. :(

Maybe we could make Kushiel's Dart our book selection and then maybe the rest in the series or at least the first 3 books, since i have those books and Jeanne has already read them.

Kushiel's Dart is the next book in my fiction queue. I've been meaning to read this series for years, now. I bought the first book at least 4 years ago and have yet to get to it, but I'm determined now!

Has anyone read "The Iron Dragon's Daughter" by Michael Swanwick? I read it about a year ago, and it was fabulous, AND it's a stand-alone book so one doesn't have to be willing to commit for years and years. Check it out, if you haven't already.

I'd advise digging them out and putting them in a higher priority spot, but then it is my most favorite series of all those I've read. One of those that keeps you wide awake long after you know you should go to sleep in order to get up for work the next day. I actually think I went into withdrawal when I finished.

I have the first 3 books myself after having them recommended by a friend, but there are stacked away in a box of books to read, and i dont expect that will be read for awhile, as have to many others to read first. From what i have been told its a excellent series.

I had many friends tell me about this series before I finally decided to give it a try. I picked up book:Kushiel's Dart|153008] and within 2 pages, knew I was hooked for the entire series! I blew through all six books one right after the other. Never once did I feel like there was a slow spot, as I have in other series I've read.

The 6 books are actually 2 trilogys. The first 3 are narrated from Phedre's POV and the second 3 are from Imriel's POV. The fact that they are all written in first person is fascinating to me since that is not the easiest method.

Anyone else care to discuss?[
