1458347 Too bad. I saw that they had over a hundred members and thought that some of them might not have come across our group yet.

1618522 I just lurk in Faith and Spirituality. Not much going on actually.

message 35: by Chantel (new)

1458347 Speaking of getting people in here, an invitation to the Faith & Spirituality group might be a good start. I'm not a member but I think Rick, R.C. and Eric are. Maybe one of them could mention it to that group.

42379 You know what? Even if Dan is a saboteur, I think I like this image better. I am in agreement with Chantel.

Now if we can get some people in here that aren't atheists, we would be all set.

message 33: by Nathan (new)

42379 Saboteur

message 32: by Chantel (new)

1458347 This one looks really nice. Now that I see it up, I think it's the better pick.

40101 Ok, the "Religion ?" image was the clear vote-winner. However, when I uploaded it, it turned out that the white space was actually blank space, which became black space on goodreads and made the words illegible, which made the image look like a White Stripes album threw up on itself. So I switched to the second-highest vote-getter. If anyone finds a better version of that first image, or a better image, then I'll gladly switch.

42379 But that's why I like the other one better---it means "Any religion????"

It asks the question at the heart of this group. All religions are welcome, true, but the idea isn't "All religions are awesome!!!! Yeah!!!!"

The idea is to discuss the validity of religious beliefs.

997526 i think the one with all the symbols is the best because it means ALL religions!!!! YAY!!!!

message 28: by Kristen (new)

700527 I guess Nathan's Religion with a question mark is best, but I LOVE the Skeleton one.

message 27: by Silly (new)

1715664 I like Nathan's.

997526 I like number 2 also.

message 25: by Rick (new)

235151 I'm such a nonconformist freethinker that I'm voting for number two.

You just got goth served!

message 24: by Adam (new)

1369212 I'll vote 1 too.

message 23: by Eric (new)

1058619 One

message 22: by Chantel (new)

1458347 I agree. Number 1.

message 21: by Nathan (new)

42379 I vote #1-----and, no, it is not just because it was my original suggestion. I think it better encompasses the point of the group.

message 20: by Muzzlehatch (new)

749155 I think 1. works nicely, simply, elegantly.

message 19: by Dan (new)

40101 Well, let's put it up to a vote. I think we should avoid images that frame the debate as one simply between Christians and atheists, and images that are overtly condescending or offensive to religion. There will plenty of time for condescension within the posts. ;) Right now, I think there are three images that fit this bill, although more suggestions are welcome.

We have:
1. religion?
2. religious symbols
3. Plato and Aristotle

I also like the idea of something like this. There are a bunch of different pie charts like this out there. If anyone knows of a better-looking one, let me know. I will arbitrarily decide when both the suggesting and voting periods have ended, because what would a religion discussion be without at least a little arbitrariness?

message 18: by Nathan (new)

42379 Not a big fan of that one Dan for some reason...

message 16: by Chantel (new)

1458347 I don't know Dan, we might alienate the FSM followers with that one.

Just kidding, it looks good to me. :)

message 15: by Dan (new)

40101 How do you guys feel about this one?

message 14: by Eric (new)

1058619 Nathan has the best one. Not really offensive to any group. I personally do not care for the buddy Christ and I do believe that Adam is right. It would discourage other groups from joining.

message 13: by Adam (new)

1369212 I don't mind buddy Christ but perhaps we need something more generic ? Otherwise we might discourage Muslims, Buddhists e.t.c ?

Or maybe I'm just over thinking things.

message 12: by Nathan (new)

42379 I think buddy christ will dissuade the religious from joining.

997526 I like Buddy Christ.

message 10: by Chantel (new)

1458347 I think Nathan's image is perfect, but I do have a soft spot for Buddy Christ. :)

message 9: by R.C. (new)

1618522 My current favorite image that sums up the debate over religion is the Fighting Monks

message 8: by Rick (new)

235151 How about Buddy Christ?

Warm and welcoming for the Christians, hilarious for the rest of us.

message 6: by Eric (new)

1058619 I think that the image should be neutral. Both images seem to lean to one side of the views.

Just my thoughts though.

message 5: by Chantel (new)

1458347 Now that I'm thinking about it though, those images might dissuade the religious folks from joining the group. Maybe I should look for a nice shiny bible image or something.

message 4: by Nathan (new)

42379 I like the second one too.

message 3: by Dan (new)

40101 Haha, I really like the second one. I thought about looking for a good group image before, but then I got lazy.

message 2: by Chantel (new)

1458347 By the way Dan, sorry if I was being presumptuous, but boredom struck. :)

message 1: by Chantel (last edited Nov 15, 2008 09:22PM) (new)

1458347 While the lovely goodreads question mark might actually work for this group, I thought I'd try to see if I could find something that might be a better fit...

skeletal-debate

michaelangelo

Anyone else have any suggestions?
