Jackie (Literary Escapism) (LiteraryEscapism) We've been getting a few requests, so Abigail and I thought it would be good to have a section based strictly on book tours.

Everything listed here is strictly voluntary and is up to each participate. Abigail and I have nothing to do with any organization or acquiring of the books.

Basic Suggestions/Guidelines for Tours:
(although each tour coordinator can set up their own rules.

* Books listed here are for book tours and can not be swapped. The idea is to get the novel to as many bloggers as possible, so reviews can be posted. So do not list a novel here you want to swap.

* Books need to be read within one week of acquiring and reviews should be posted in a timely manner.

* The first person to respond with get the novel and the next commenter will get it next and so on. Do not leave a comment if you are unable to read the book and participate in the tour.

* If you're hosting a book tour on your site, you're more than welcome to post it here, but please make sure to include the signup link.

* Once you're a part of the tour, it is the responsibility of each participate to contact the person before and after them and exchange addresses (or the addresses needed).

* Books should be mailed priority so as not to waste time with shipping. Please include a tracking number and email it to the person is waiting for the book. (Updated: Priority mail is preferred, but we're not getting paid for this, so if Media Mail is cheaper, that works).

* Any questions, please list them here.

* Rules are subject to change in case I've forgotten something good.

* If no one claims the book after 1 month, then the person holding it can use it as a swap. However, as long as there is a demand for it, it cannot be used as a swap. I.e. the tour starts in May and there's people who want to review it through the end of August. If no one claims it in September, then the last person can use it as a swap starting Oct 1st.

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (LiteraryEscapism) It'll also work for the newbies who don't have books to swap, but still want in on the action.

Krystal | 1242 comments Priority mailing is around $5, right? It is fine if the first participant contacts the second, but if it is up to the donor to make sure the tour works, can the donor at least get the D.C.?

message 5: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (LiteraryEscapism) Depends on the book. I've sent some books priority for around $2.50. Just depends on how heavy the book is.

You're talking about donation credit, right? Why would the donor get DC credit for mailing out a book as part of a tour? You can only get DC credit if you donate the book to a recognized organization. At least, I've never heard of getting DC credit just for giving books to other people.

Krystal | 1242 comments Wait what? If I receive 4 ARC's to pass around from the publisher-it's up to me to make sure those ARC's are reviewed and not "lost or stolen." It's not an ARC that is supposed to be shared at random, sometimes they even say it has to go to bloggers that have at least 4 months experience. I've never head of Donation Credit...D.C. means delivery confirmation for people who have done these tours many times before. The only book's I've sent that are "average" have cost me over $4 hands down with no D.C.-which would be required.

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (LiteraryEscapism) You know, you're right. We're not getting paid for this. Screw it - Media Mail if it's cheaper.

Krystal, please tell me you use Media Mail. The only time I have ever spent more than $3 mailing a book is when I'm including more than one book. As for delivery confirmation, that's up to each individual. I don't normally include it, but I've never had a problem with anything getting lost in the mail either. I'll probably end up getting burned before I start using.

Technically, if a publisher sends YOU the book, if they haven't contacted you before, then no, you're not responsible to ensure the book gets reviewed. If they have contacted you and you said you would review it, then yes you're suppose to review it.

For the tours, you're only responsible for getting it to the next person, that's it. If there's no one behind you, then you don't have to worry about it. HOWEVER, you cannot offer the book as a swap until 1 month has passed.

As for donation credit...you've never heard of donation credit?! Dude, anytime you donate something to Goodwill, the Library, Salvation Army, anything like that - get a receipt. You can claim that on your taxes and it's a tax deduction. I go through my house every couple of months and donate a ton of things. I ended up with close to $5k in tax credit because of donations in 2010 and I'll probably be close to that again for 2011.

Krystal | 1242 comments Interesting, I never did donation credit-I donated ages 13-20 with regards to books, can you even claim it under 18 or does it have to be household?

I've only ever been contacted for review tours, I tend not to donate my own ARC's-they "disappear" and I'm left worrying about it. If I donate the ARC or give one to the ARC tour, more often than not it is one I am supposed to offer up for a giveaway-are you saying the last person on the tour just keeps it?

I only ever use media mail unless it is for school-that has to be priority so I know I've never paid less than $4, more like $5.25 with no delivery confirmation.

Krystal | 1242 comments Well, is that how it is set up? The last person on the tour keeps the book?

If you file your own taxes, you can claim the donation credit.

Unless the author or whoever is putting up the book stipulates differently, then yes, the last person on the tour ends up with the book. If you want to donate an ARC for a tour, but would like it back, then when you list the tour, just say that. It all depends on where the book is coming from. I have a couple of ARCs I'm going to put up for tour, but I don't want them back. Each person is different.

Otherwise, what else could happen with the book? Whoever does have the book, has to have it at least a month before it's officially their's though. If, at any time, someone else wants the book within that month, they have to give it up and the month starts over.

I've only been involved with two review tours and both were with the same author. The first time she requested the ARC back, but she had us all sign it, so that was kind of fun. The other time, we all ended up with our own copy and I'm not about to give that one up. *grin*

message 12: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (LiteraryEscapism) Unless I have an extreme interest in a book, I don't sign up for ARC tours, so I'm not really familiar with them. So thank you Krystal for all the questions. Abigail and I want to make sure this runs smoothly and with as little hassle as possible and these were all fabulous questions.

If there's anything else that needs to be clarified or address, let us know. Any suggestions would be welcomed too.

message 13: by Krystal (new)

Krystal | 1242 comments I've always ended up with my own copy and one or two to give away-including the ARC copy (these have all been publisher ARC tours for me though) and they want the ARC's given away if they've only provided 3-4 ARC's, they send the bloggers finished copies.

message 14: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (LiteraryEscapism) I'm anticipated that most of the books offered to the group for tours will be coming from authors, so there'll only be one copy, hence the need to share.

message 15: by Krystal (new)

Krystal | 1242 comments Besides Lyndsey-are there any authors in this group? I guess they could come from authors, doesn't seem like many people want to run their own personal arc's though, I don't want to be the first ><

message 16: by Jackie (last edited Jan 08, 2012 05:25AM) (new)

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (LiteraryEscapism) Abigail and I have had authors from the outside contact us specifically about donating a book to the group for a tour. Thus the idea for starting this thread.

message 17: by Krystal (new)

Krystal | 1242 comments I do too, but those are the copies I can't bring myself to give away because they tend to be signed and I'd feel bad.

Soumi, I don't understand your question?

Soumi (TheBarbieQueen) | 87 comments Well I was asking If I'm hosting an ARC giveaway on my blog, under which discussion board I should put up the topic?

We don't currently have a dedicated discussion for promoting personal ARC giveaways, but it's not a bad idea. We may start one in the future, in the meantime feel free to post about it in the Misc board.
