402486 Might read Lucky as well, but also need to read Ghostheart - R.J. Ellory (a fiction book lol)

message 53: by dollmatic (new)

1763382 I think I'll try "Lucky" by Alice Sebold.

A book that I've already read and would recommend is "The Prisoner's Wife" by Asha Bandele. Very compelling read.

message 51: by Nhemskie (new)

1265895 I'm currently reading Eat, Pray and Love and planning reading 'The Glass Castle' and Obama's 'The Audacity of Hope' this month.

message 50: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

402486 ooooooooo now I am gettin excited to read this lol.

message 49: by Karen (new)

1396651 oh Avigail, I've only 120 pages left. I've laughed so much - I'm loving it and will definitely go see the movie when it comes out. Although I don't think I'd ever has a labrador retriever myself, I will not have the strength to deal with them. In saying that I love love love dogs! We have an adorable pug who is currently splayed out on his tummy by my feet and snoring his way in dog's dreamland :) He's also crazy on his own right :p

message 48: by Avigail (new)

376348 Well I started yesterday Marley & Me - John Grogan and I enjoy it very much, although I am only 30 pages in the book.

message 47: by Mitzie (new)

249558 I might finally give Agatha Christie An Autobiography and Anne Hart's Agatha Christie Poirot a read. Technically they're the only non-fiction I have in my collection that I haven't read til now!

message 46: by Melissa (new)

398294 I'm adding Hidden Power: Presidential Marriages That Shaped Our History to my list. It's been eying me up from the bookshelf for the past few months, so I'm finally going to give into temptation.

message 45: by Lanica (new)

1336787 Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson.

I've been hoping to have an excuse to pick this one off my shelf. Excellent!

message 44: by Luann (new)

651844 Thanks for the suggestion, Karen! I see that some people are doing that, but I didn't think that far ahead when I made my Christmas Day list. All of the books - both for the Christmas challenge and the December reads - are from my TBR list. So I've been wanting to read them anyhow, and I now have them ALL sitting here in two stacks. Many of them are from the library, so I might as well read them now while I have them here. I'll be sure to plan more carefully next time we have two things going on in the same month, though. :)

message 43: by Ann from S.C. (new)

1272254 I am going to read INTO THIN AIR by Jon Krakauer. I have read several of his, and I ahve heard this one is good.

message 42: by Rachel (new)

572197 I plan to read Rachel's Tears: The Spiritual Journey of Columbine Martyr Rachel Scott by Beth Nimmo - it's been sitting on my bookcase for ages and I think it was a gift from my parents, so if feel quite bad for not reading it already!

message 41: by Karen (new)

1396651 hey, Luann, I think you can fit 3 of those books into the Christmas challenge if you really want to :)

message 40: by Jenny (new)

440859 I'm going to read Marley & Me: Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog, it's been on my bookshelf for ages now!

message 39: by Luann (new)

651844 I'm excited for a nonfiction month. I'm going to take the chance to read some of the Sibert Award winners that I haven't read yet. And one adult nonfiction book that I've really been wanting to read. Of course, none of this will happen until AFTER the Christmas challenge. :)

The real James Herriot a memoir of my father by Jim Wight
The life and death of Adolf Hitler by James Cross Giblin
Blizzard the storm that changed America by Jim Murphy
Team Moon how 400 000 people landed Apollo 11 on the moon by Catherine Thimmesh
Secrets of a Civil War submarine by Sally M. Walker

message 38: by Carole (new)

1632400 Gotta keep it simple for December, I shall be up to my eyes distributing my own book --- so my choice of non fiction will be Eats,Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss and On Writing by Steven King.

message 37: by Melissa (new)

398294 Ha! Julie, I just reserved that at the library, I'm picking it up tomorow! Too funny!

message 36: by SuzieR (new)

176931 Oh Julianne, I'll be interested to hear what you think of Steve & Me! Just finished it.

message 35: by Julianne (new)

560953 I just picked up Steve & Me about Steve Irwin, written by his wife, Terri. I think I'll read that, too.

Oh, and my DS got me two non-fictions for my b-day, that I might be able to whiz through also:

Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay: And Other Things I Had to Learn as a New Mom

Naptime Is the New Happy Hour: And Other Ways Toddlers Turn Your Life Upside Down

message 34: by Donna (new)

1334924 Well I have many of them but I think I am only going to pick 2 (3 if one of them comes in on time)since I have a lot on my plate

1-The Glass Castle (which I am reading now)
2- A child Called "it" (I have been on a waiting list from thelibrary for 2 months so far)
3- Me Talk Pretty One Day

message 33: by Cathy (new)

1195031 I also thought Lucky was amazing, and I loved Marley, although I read my daughter's junior edition "A dog like no other" (She's 13 and read it twice). I also really like Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett - a great literary friendship memoir.

message 32: by Melissa (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I think I'll read:

The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene.

It's been a while since I got stuck into any science books so I'm looking forward to it.

message 31: by Liz (last edited Nov 21, 2008 07:24AM) (new)

1472632 These are the 3 from my 12 Days of Christmas list that are non-fiction. Aside from them, don't think I'll get many more in. December is usually a bad reading month. Since these books are after one another on the list, I should get them all in.

How Reading Changed my Life – Anna Quindlen

Raising a Reader: A Mother's Tale of Desperation and Delight – Jennie Nash

I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts On Being a Woman - Nora Ephron

message 30: by Elwen (new)

183337 Ah, been having Marley & Me for months, maybe December is the right time for me to finally start reading it *grins*

message 29: by Perkin (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I'd like to read "One who walked alone" by Novalyne Price Ellis. It's about her relationship with Robert E. Howard, a pulp fiction writer who's credited with creating the 'sword and sorcery' genre. It was released after his suicide partly because she was sick of people calling him crazy and wanted his side of the story told. Only one person has shelved it as non fiction, but then again only six people have actually read it on goodreads.

message 28: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

402486 I read A Dog Year - Jon Katz. That was what gave Marley & Me the storyline in the 1st place.

message 27: by Christina (new)

1110169 I can vouch that Lucky by Alice Sebold is an amazing read. ;)

Like someone else said, this isn't one of my favourite shelves, but the whole point of this group is to expand our horizons sooo...

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch.

And I'm really looking forward to it! :D (I wanted to try Marley and Me, but I don't think I'm ready for it just yet...)

message 26: by Lynlee4 (new)

1414556 I'll commit to In Cold Blood since I plan on reading that for the 12 days of Christmas challenge.

message 25: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

402486 Lucky - Alice Sebold
Marley & Me - John Grogan
Street Kid - Judy Westwater

message 24: by Karen (new)

1396651 wow, lucky you, spaceyplum.

Thing abt living is Australia is that we're really behind with tv shows & movies :p

message 23: by Kathryn (last edited Nov 17, 2008 11:38PM) (new)

1696615 I don't know how many of theses I will get to, but I want to read:
Escape
Night
Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities

message 22: by Spaceyplum (last edited Nov 17, 2008 10:22AM) (new)

979180 did you know there's a movie in the making?
suppose to be released in 2009...

Yes Karen, it opens on Christmas Day! I'm sure it won't be as good as the book but I'm a sucker for anything doggie related and I loved the first preview with a Marley running through the beach to the theme of Chariots of Fire and his beleaguered owners chasing after him in slow mo. I'm really a sucker for anything puppy related except perhaps Beverly Hills Chihuahua... something about a bunch of talking chihuahua's freaked me out!

message 21: by Julianne (new)

560953 Spaceyplum-

I loved Assassination Vacation!

I have this feeling my list is going to change:

Take the Cannoli-Sarah Vowell
Think Big-Ben Carson
Monster of Florence-Preston Douglas

I usually can easily read one non-fiction per month. Adding two more really changes my monthly reading dynamics. But, I picked one that's educational, one that's inspirational, and (hopefully) one that reads like fiction.

message 20: by Lynai (new)

1470974 i don't think i could pick from this month's shelf as i will be joining the Christmas Challenge and i have the entire Anne of Green Gables series on my on-deck shelf.

message 19: by Sonja (new)

165389 I'm using Spice, The History of a Temptation by Jack Turner from my "Christmas Day" list for this month's read. I love reading about the history of food or how food/drink links to cultures...

Some of my favorites are A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage and The True History of Chocolate by Sophie D. Coe.

message 18: by Lynlee4 (new)

1414556 I'll have to keep it simple for Dec...

In Cold Blood

I'll also use this for my I in the 12 days of Christmas challenge.

message 17: by Melody (new)

1559001 I'll aim for:

Beautiful boy by David Sheff
and
Into the wild by Jon Krakauer

message 16: by Susanna (last edited Nov 16, 2008 11:24AM) (new)

message 15: by Karen (new)

1396651 >spaceyplum
did you know there's a movie in the making?
suppose to be released in 2009...

message 14: by Spaceyplum (new)

979180 LOL... that's precisely why I joined :-D I read Marley and Me last year and it was quite lovely... one of the few blockbuster books that did not disappoint me.

message 13: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

402486 Yes Karen, but I am gonna choose carefully for nxt month.

message 12: by Karen (new)

1396651 > Fiona, crikey! What a list! Is that all on your TBR?

> Spaceyplum, it's not my fave genre either but that's the purpose of the group- to branch out and pick up books we wouldn't usually ;)

I'm definitely reading Marley & Me (Grogan)

I've on my TBR which I may or may not pick up:
Still Life with Rice by Heelie Lee
Dreams from my father by Barack Obama
A song for Mary by Dennis Smith

message 11: by Natasha (last edited Dec 24, 2008 09:36PM) (new)

1045275 Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser

message 10: by Spaceyplum (new)

979180 Not my favorite genre but I was happy to find I actually have one of the books listed in my TBR pile so I'll definitely be reading Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell. I've also been meaning to try Sarah Vowell so I may try to get my hands on a copy of Assassination Vacation. I'd also like to get Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife by Mary Roach since I found Stiff quite fascinating.

message 9: by Jamie (new)

898662 I think I'll be reading the following non-fiction in December:

Jane Austen's Letters
A Walk with Jane Austen by Lori Smith
Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy

message 8: by Vicki (new)

29460 I will be re-reading Farewell to Manzanar and Night because I will be teaching them soon. I also want to read Running with Scissors since its been sitting on my shelf forever.

message 7: by SuzieR (new)

176931 Ok, planning to read Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers which has been sitting in my TBR pile for a while!

I also fancy Take the Cannoli so might try and get hold of that one!

message 6: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

402486 I have a choice out of that lot at the same time. I might actually work out what I really fancy lol.

message 5: by Catamorandi (new)

754081 I plan to read A CHILD NAMED IT and A BROTHER'S JOURNEY: SURVIVING A CHILDHOOD OF ABUSE by David Pelzer and Richard B Pelzer.
