We are having a new Series madness challenge and this one is a bit different than last year.

We are reading from 1 january 2012 until 31 december 2012.

There are no tasks to complete but points to be gathered. You gather points by reading books that are a part of a series. For every book that is first in a series you will get one point, for every book that is second you will get two points etc. If a series like Discworld has 39 books you can get 39 points for the last book in the series.
The catch is that you have to read the books in order. If you first read book 3 and then book 6 and then book 1 you will not get full points. For every book read out of order you will get one point.

You don't have to read all the books during the challenge. So if you have already read books 1-5 in a series last year or before and read book 6 in 2012 you will get 6 points as long as you have read them.

Participants:
Barbara - 567
Varla Fionna - 486
Carolien - 484
Lindie - 424

LOL!!!
It is good you didn't hear me when I was updating last night. I had to update 4 books and 3 of them were just a few pages shy of 500 pages for the epic challenge. I had 470 pages which is ok 30 pages shy but I also had 496 pages and 497 pages and I do believe I have invented new curses when I found that out.

Not to be a pain but I am planning to check the books especially the ones that will earn a lot of points. When I checked your read list I saw that the light fantastic is missing and you need to have read this one to get full points for your three TP books. This can be of course something you forgot to add to your read list but if you still have to read the book you will get only one point for the 3 TP books.

Barbara | 4379 comments Mod
Wow quite a lot of people have joined, great!
I made a particpants list in the first post so you can see how everyone is doing. Please check if I haven't forgotten to add your name? Also not everyone has a total points in their post where they keep track. Please add one so it makes it easier to update the first post. Thanks!

Barbara wrote: "This can be of course something you forgot to add to your read list but if you still have to read the book you will get only one point for the 3 TP books. "

It is in fact a book I have read, but that was prior to me joining Goodreads. I've only added books I've (re)read since then on Goodreads. I'm not one of those people who will add the whole history on Goodreads to have 2000+ books or something like that and adding them now would mess up the reading challenge counter.

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1736 comments Mod
You can still add them and put "date completed" as the year before you joined and it won't show up for this year's counter.

That is why I dislike adding books to my to read list or my wishlist. If you look at your profile it counts all your books and some people have read 50 books but have a couple of thousand books in there to read list and that gives a funny impression. I only added books to my to read list because there are challenges in our group that require having one and I only made a wishlist because there are a lot of books I want to buy but I always loose the paper I wrote it down on so I thought it would be easier to have a wishlist on Goodreads. But I know what you mean.
Thanks for clearing the issue up. I am glad I don't have to adjust your score. It gives me something to strive for and it motivates me to beat you :)

Crusader (CrusaderZA) | 2267 comments Mod
I think you have a much better chance of winning this since you've got far more of the Discworld series to finish and that helps heaps with points.

That is true, but still you like series too so you might get a lot of points so it is still wide open as to who "wins" :)

Emma (emmauk007) | 1068 comments Just wondering if The Eye of the world by Robert Jordan is a 1 point book or a 2 .. the reason I ask is that in some cases its classed as the first book and in some its classed as the second book. Shall I just count it as 1 point? Thats what ive done anyway

Barbara | 4379 comments Mod
What would be the first as it is classed as the second book in the series?
I know it only as part one. So count it as 1 point.

Crusader (CrusaderZA) | 2267 comments Mod
It's 1 point since it's the first in the series. I think those who count it as the 2nd book are including the prequel novella New Spring

Lauren Smith | 6488 comments Mod
I figured this issue might come up for series that have prequels published at a later date. In my opinion, you should just decide how you're going to read the series - publication order or chronological order - an allocate points accordingly.

So if Emma wants to start with New Spring (as long as it has 150+ pages) she can get one point for that, and then two points for The Eye of the World and so on. But if she wants to read in order of publication, New Spring is either optional or can be read for whatever number of points its publication position allows.

That makes sense. For those who want to go with publication order. New Spring was printed in 2004 between books 10 and 11. So that would give Crossroads of Twilight (10 points), New Spring (11), Knife of Dreams (12) and from then on for the rest as book number + 1.

Emma (emmauk007) | 1068 comments Thanks for the input guys.I am just going to count it as 1 point though as its really the first book in the series. :-)

Carolien (Carolien_S) | 1036 comments It does help if you read the rules so I think I'm now sorted on what counts and doesn't. Do I have it right if I have read every book in the series previously, I add the one I have read now as the number in the series? I'm pretty sure I've read most of Elizabeth George, but won't vouch for it, so I've added this as a 1 point. The Evanovich's I've all read and they're standing on my bookshelf so the new one should be 17 points since it's number 17 in the series?

Absolutely. Nice one! A book that is worth 17 points!

P.s. will you please add a total points to your update post? That way I don't have to add them up all the time when I make an update. Thanks!

Done. Btw I checked the Elizabeth George ones last night and discovered I miss number 1 of all the books to miss! So I'll have to go find it and add it I think.

Great Thanks!

oh, bad one to miss. But if you read it then every book after that in order of the series counts for the full marks.

I have a question. What do we do about companion books? Do we leave them out or do we give them one point?

Lu (Sugar & Snark) | 9964 comments Mod
Can you post the book?

I know some companion books are called (0.5) or (1.5)?
