Zakiya the Walking Butterfly (walkingbutterfly) | 3474 comments This challenge is using the same basic idea as the SOS: Serious Overload of Series group, who introduced the idea last year with 11x11 in 2011. Basically, you pick 12 categories that you want to read; you then read 12 books in each category. At the end of the year, this adds up to be 144 books!

Mad Scientist, Meghan, and I are going to work on coming up with about 20-25 categories that you all will be able to pick from.

Rules:
~Any book will count.
~Rereads are allowed.
~All books must be finished on or between January 1 and December 31, 2012 to count.
~Every two months or so, give us an update post with how far along you are in your reading. Example: "5/10 read."
~Each book can only count for one category.

Zakiya the Walking Butterfly (walkingbutterfly) | 3474 comments Special Notes/ETAs:

~You don't have to list your categories before posting the books you're going to read, like I have below.
~If you put all 12 category lists in one post, you might run out of characters; you might want to split them up into 2 posts like I have below.
~If you choose to do Alphabet Soup, the goal is to try and read 24 letters of the alphabet with 12 books. One for the author's first name, and one for their last. If you read a Sarah Dessen book, and then read Lemony Snicket, one S will be "invisible" because of the S you've already read. However, you can still list the Lemony Snicket book under Alphabet Soup to get credit for the L.

I don't think I can read 144 books this year either, but I think it would be fun to try at least!

Me either. Closest I ever came was 130 books... with the cheat of having a few novellas included in that bunch.

I do that too. =) And I'll include graphic novels too. They're all still books in my eyes.

Thank you! I'm just about to hit 75 for this year, but that was only because I barely read the first half of the year. I think I'll be able to hit at least 100 next year... but I'm kinda doubting 144. It'll be fun to try though!

80 is a really good amount of books!!

I have a question for the challenge. Are we allowed to fit a book into more than 1 category?

message 23: by Zakiya, dancing en pointe (new)

Zakiya the Walking Butterfly (walkingbutterfly) | 3474 comments Well the goal of the challenge is to read 144 books in the entire year, and if you do that, it would make the amount of books you actually read less than that. So I'm going to say no on this one.

Melissa | 194 comments I hope it's okay that I made up my own categories, and used more than one of a specific type. For example, for specific genre I used both Memoir/biography and a Romance Section. I hope this is okay. If not, let me know and I'll change them.

Aneeqah | 228 comments Mad Scientist- I was looking through your list, and I saw that you had Haven under stand-alones. It's actually the first in a series. The next book is called Mirage.Just wanted to point that out. =)

It is more then alright. I know it doesn't seem like much of a challenge. But every reader is different. This group is about increasing read books. So, if it is tailored to each person the chances of more success in that is increased.

Plus, everyone who adds to this every time the finish a book will get a chance to see all kinds of books since we have so many sections going. I just love this so much more then a cookie cutter challenge. It's yours and you made it even more yours!

I can not wait to see what you find for food and drink.

I've read a few off the 1001 books to read before you die but not on purpose. I seen some of the books on there and I'm not trying to put myself to sleep. But some on the list I would recommend in a heartbeat. Reading is just up to the person & I highly think also up to the persons mood at that time.

Thanks... I was just not sure. I looked it up but I didn't see any tell tale signs of it being a series. I picked it up at BEA so honestly I have not a clue what this one is about. I would of moved it if I did get it read. LOL! But thanks so much for the heads up.

**Anyone else find mistakes in my books... please do let me know. Z normal picks them out for me but I think she is slacking ;) **

Mad Scientist (MadScientist) | 1132 comments Welcome... I don't think many of us think we can read 144 books. That is 12 books a month. Whew! But it will be fun trying and cheering each other on!

I'm hoping to get a few novella prequels read that I've been meaning to fit in. Cheating but they need to be read nonetheless so why not for this cause?? *smiles*

LOL! They all look good to me ;) And I noticed you had The Girl in the Steel Corset on two lists. Aneeqah asked yesterday if it was allowed, and I replied in the negative. You'll have to take it off one of the lists (Steampunkery & First in Series).

The most books I've ever read in a month was 10 and I think my average is somewhere around 8 per month since I've gotten to just over 100 books this year, so I'll probably fall a bit short, but that's okay.

Mad Scientist (MadScientist) | 1132 comments Will do Z!

I think we all think we will not make 144 ;)
But I'm sure excited to start! I read 12 books last Jan but that was the only month this year.

Maybe we will make it and surprise each other. =) It'll be really fun to cheer each other on!

12 books a month would mean 3 books a week, which isn't so bad. I don't know if I've ever read 12 books in a month, but I guess we'll see this year!

Mad Scientist (MadScientist) | 1132 comments I hope each of us makes it to a 100. That we can say we finished a few sections & that we had fun. Sometimes pressure & blog reviews can make reading "work". I'm looking forward to a fun year.

I think i already have a shelf of food and drink books on my profile if you want to take a look there, Mad, that's probably what I'll use. But, I need to work a lot on my organizing coming up, I was for a while and then I stopped. For the 1001 list I'm going to try to stick with somewhat lighter fare from there if that's possible, so I don't put myself to sleep reading, lol.

Books that put you to sleep are need on occasion but not for everyday reads.

I think I need to vow to read one classic this year. I'm horrid at classics and I'm pretty sure I have never completed one. I have a graphic novel of Moby Dick. I'm sure that is the closest that I have ever come. And sections of Oliver Twist. Enough to get by in discussions in my european history class.

Zakiya the Walking Butterfly (walkingbutterfly) | 3474 comments Haha, I can understand that :). My first classics were Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies. And I only read those because I had to for my Gifted class. Since then I've read Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, and now Emma & Jane Eyre. They've all been enjoyable, but I agree with MS that they don't make good everyday reads.

Mad Scientist (MadScientist) | 1132 comments I'm going to add an extra part to my list. I want to keep track of how many books I read in 2012 that are 400+ pages. I know the idea of reading so many books will have me reaching for smaller books &/or books with bigger font.

SO my goal is to not change my reading habits. Read what I want.

Well, I think I'm going to pick one classic to start in January and read a chapter every other day. Sort of like a read the bible thing. & see how that goes.
