Valerie I used to laugh at that part, I've seen it twice live in play form. Once only a few clapped. I was wondering if they were going to let her die but the show just went on. I liked the original book because it's harsher then the retold ones. The pirates dont just fall over in the book there is death and Peter even talks about murder like it's no big deal.

Astraea "Many clapped. Some didn't. A few little beasts hissed."

That line had to have been straight out of personal experience. He was concerned about it even before the first showing. He asked the orchestra to lay down their instruments and clap if few or none of the audience did.
