There are so many lists that have been created (especially during the 20th century) to establish the books that encapsulate the "wisdom" of the ages. There has been much discussion around this matter as there has been a shift in the literary canon in academics. Harold Bloom The Western Canon: The Books and School of the Ages created quite a stir. What do you think makes a book great? How do we as a culture establish the curriculum, i.e. the literary works we want to emphasize for each generation? What kind of criteria would you use?

Italo Calvino made a number of statements about classics. Do you agree with any of these?The classics are the books of which we usually hear people say, “I am rereading . . . ” and never “I am reading . . . “
We use the words “classics” for books that are treasured by those who have read and loved them; but they are treasured no less by those who have the luck to read them for the first time in the best conditions to enjoy them

I have always been tempted to tackle it, but find that I prefer a more holistic approach rather than Bloom's time line as well and nation based themes. I.e. I find it more intriguing to travel in space and time between some of these works. One day... perhaps...
What is your opinion of Bloom's canon? Does it represent the ultimate tier of the works written in the West?

Surely Bloom hasn't left anything off his list!I do think it might be nice to follow his list and see how literature developed, how authors answer one another. However, I lack all discipline.
