Read a book set in a state/province/city in which you were born or in which you have lived. The same location should be used each time you complete this task.

Silly Wisconsin... found several options but none are the kind that I would normally read. Looks like I'll need to muster through American Wife after all, which should make my stepmother happy!
Paula, have you ever read any Wallace Stegner? About half of his Crossing to Safety is set in Madison, Wisconsin.
goodreads lists 14 books set in Wisconsin, starting with The Story of Edgar SawtelleETA: I've also heard good things about Driftless
Does it need to be a different author each time you complete this task or can it be the same author?
I have further complicated the challenge by trying to stick to books I either own or, if necessary, get via my Audible subscription. I may, however, need to look into a few of the others listed for WI - a lot of them looked too... emotional... for my tastes, but the ones you guys mentioned look interesting, for sure! Driftless, especially. Who knew cougars were an issue in small-town WI?
Paula, if you like mystery, suspense, spy thrillers, etc, http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/ has a list of novels based on setting you may find something of interest there. . .

I'd like to use Oral History for this task, but can't seem to find where in Appalachia it is set. Nothing lists the state. Does anyone know a good way to figure that out?
Sorry, Denae, I did a Google search and find there is a Hoot Owl Holler in both West Virginia and Virginia. The author's website is not clear. Could it be that it isn't a real place in this novel?
That's what I suspect. It looks like a lot of her books have somewhat ambiguous locations. Is this something for which I can get an exception? I have another book I can use, but am a lot more interested in this.

Hmm, I'd lose combo points on another task, but I do live in VA now. Somehow that slipped my mind. I think I need sleep. Thank you both!

I lived many years where Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky all meet. Near Cumberland Gap national Historic Park. We weren't far from Ewing, Va and Big Stone Gap. I have relatives from both those places. Anyway Adriana Trigiani is from Big Sotne Gap and actually wrote a book by that title. Have you read any of hers? I also think Animal, Vegetable, Miracle : A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver takes place in Va at her farm. I love lee Smith too. My favorite book of hers so far is Fair and Tender Ladies
Other Appalachian authors i love a lotKentucky
Silas House
North Carolina (have also written books set in Tennessee)
Sharyn McCrumb(Love her Ballad series)
Ron Rash
Fred Chappell
Tennessee
T.S. Stribling
Catherine Marshall
Amy Greene
Barbara Kingsolver has written books that take place in both Tennessee and Kentucky
the Mitford series by Jan Karon takes place in VA and those books about the angel, the Augusta Goodnight series by Mignon F. Ballard take place in several different Southern Appalachian States

I'm in Northern VA in the DC area, but I'm from East Tennessee, southeast of the Gap.

My father and his side of the family live in East Tennessee. We have a cabin on the Hiwassee river where we spend most our summers and holidays. Me and the kids spent the whole month of October there. it's about the prettiest place in the world!
It really is. My grandparents' farm is in Cocke County, right by the French Broad & up against the Smokies. It's pretty much my favorite place on Earth. Cocke & Greene Counties are beautiful.
Rosemary wrote: "Is it OK if half of the book is set in your location?"I'd prefer it if the book is set entirely in your location. I'll make an exception if 5 pages of a 300+ page are set in another location.
