Google and EFF will stoop as low as it takes to prevent Congress from taking measures to stop online piracy.

For those who have been following the uproar over SOPA, have you noticed the regurgitated tirades about breaking the internet and blacklist bills?

Have you noticed that some Op Ed writers cannot even transcribe the acronym. If they think it is the "Stopping" (as opposed to "Stop") Act, is it likely that they have read the wording of the Act itself?

Here are 3 good links to the copyrightalliance blog where various misrepresentations are debunked.

Lamar Smith opines
This bill does not “threaten online freedoms.” But it does threaten the profits generated by those who willfully steal intellectual property by trafficking in counterfeit or pirated goods.

— Rep. Lamar Smith (R., Texas) chairs the House Judiciary Committee and is a sponsor of the Stop Online Piracy Act.

Quoting Lamar Smith

"The problem of rogue sites is real, immediate, and widespread. According to estimates, IP theft costs the U.S. economy more than $100 billion annually and results in the loss of thousands of American jobs. Congress cannot stand by and do nothing while some of America’s most profitable and productive industries are under attack.

The House Judiciary Committee has and will continue to work with groups to improve this bill and ensure that it targets the problem of rogue websites. Unfortunately, there are some critics of this legislation who are not serious about helping to protect America’s intellectual property. That’s because they’ve made large profits by working with and promoting rogue sites to U.S. consumers. Google recently paid a half billion dollars to settle a criminal case because of the search-engine giant’s active promotion of rogue foreign pharmacies that sold counterfeit and illegal drugs to U.S. patients. Their opposition to this legislation is self-serving since they profit from doing business with rogue sites."

Another excellent article to share

http://www.ncpc.org/topics/intellectu...

"If you think intellectual property theft is a victimless crime, think again. It costs the U.S. economy tens of billions of dollars each year, deprives people of their livelihoods, encourages criminal activities by gangs and organized crime groups, and sometimes results in serious illness or injury."

The pirates are giving away the latest Sherlock Holmes movie (Game of Shadows), also 15,000 ebooks.

Google, Yahoo, PayPal, Filesonic are all involved and making money off this rampant piracy, and I find it really hard to believe that no one has ever sent a DMCA to PayPal, or Yahoo, or Google.

It's really not hard to see why Google is paying so much to stir up the public against any attempt by Congress to deal with foreign pirates.

"... the Registrar of Copyrights testified before this committee last month, "It is my view that if Congress does not continue to provide serious responses to online piracy, the U.S. copyright system will ultimately fail."
As of this morning, typing "download movies for free" into Google will take you to sites like Pirate Bay that offer free copies of infringing films and TV shows. While the Internet should be free, it should not be lawless.
The problem of rogue Web sites is real, immediate and increasing. It harms companies across the spectrum. And its scope is staggering. One recent survey found that nearly one quarter of global Internet traffic is infringing. The resultant economic losses runs into the hundreds of billions of dollars every year."

Celine, there are a lot of Congresspersons, which is why the SOPA and IP Protect legislation are being so vigorously attacked.

Those against doing something (helpful) about piracy are Ron Wyden, Darrell Issa, Ron Paul.
