Health - Diet - Exercise
How is everyone doing on our BNC goals?
- journal
- water
- daily exercise
- no food after 7 pm
- 5 fruit/veggies daily
- eat mindfully
- Fiber 25-30
- low sodium -less than 2000
- low fat
- some quiet time each day
Well Hope i'm here first I tried it and gave up and then still emailed me that I was signed up so I continued. Anyway as for the topic the diet hasn't been good lately. This week I was good and I still gained. I just can't get back to total 20 again. But I decided monday I'm starting to journal again. I'm still walking but maybe I need to add something else to change things and still drinking water. Probably not doing enough fruits and veggies. And I have to go back to weighing everything for the journal also. WW leader talked about the book Mindless eating. I looked at it today in Borders but for some reason I think I might have bought it in the past so until I know for sure I didn't buy it again.
DJ, I just started to jnl again on Nov. 1. I thought I wasn't eating much, but the journal has shown me otherwise. It really does help.
As for the exercise, I got really depressed that I was walking 3-5 miles every day and not losing an ounce. So last month I hardly walked. And I saw the scale go up. But now with the new month, I made a commitment to start up again. I think when I walk I do the distance, but I don't walk fast enough. I need to work on that.
I too need to monitor the veg/fruit. When I jnl, that helps with this too.
Well, good luck to both of us. Maybe we can help keep each other motivated.
I need to change everything I am doing. More fruit; less bread/starch. More exercise.
I am going to a wedding in June and want to lose weight by then. Then we go on a cruise in Sept. Would love to be thin for that cruise. I need to get motivated.
Can't seem to get into that ZONE.
That's the hard part.

ALIAS & DJ... I can journal; although it is a PAIN
I can start to exercise 4/5 times per week
I can add fruit & veggies
Start eating mindfully
I cannot stop eating before 7pm. I'm a night eater and always saved points for that night time snack. And I still lost well. So its doable for me.
The other stuff..fiber;sodium; will all be POINTS for me.
Quiet time.... I may need that this weekend.
Friends over for a cook out Friday night then on to a birthday party.
Football game Saturday (last home game)
Concert 3pm Sunday and dinner afterwards...
OK, I start back WW living on Monday... lol
Traveler, white starch is my issue, too. White bread and white pasta. My mind keeps saying I am not full until I have the bread. And the whole wheat I just can't get into the taste. I have to work on this big time.
Traveler, what do you mean that fiber/sodium will be points for you? I know WW counts fiber, but I don't think they are mindful of sodium. There frozen food is not low sodium.
You seem on the right track, now if we all could just get the scale to agree with us !
Alias... there are certain things I also had a hard time with and finding a good wheat bread was one of them.
We have a bread down here called Captain John Derst. I think it may only be in the South but correct me if I'm wrong. It's 40 cal/slice. One PT for 2 slices. I really like it. If I can't find it then I go for Merrietta (is that right?)
The other thing that was difficult was mayo. I don't use much of it but use it to make my tuna. Again, there is a Mayo sold in the South that is the BEST. They have a light and its the only light mayo I like. It's DUKE's.
As for the fiber/sodium... I was commenting that i don't have to follow that independently b/c WW just has you focus on points. I don't focus on getting so much fiber, or so many points of fiber.
Does that make sense.
As for soduim, WW doesn't really monitor it unless health issues are involved. Most people will flush it out with all that water. lol
Oh, I typed it all out well... now I have to DO IT.
Traveler, it's funny, everyone has different things that are hard for them go give up.
For me, mayo is not an issue, the fat free or lite is fine. Though my sister and niece refuse to use either and will only use whole fat mayo.
As for tuna, I've switched to low sodium tuna, and find it is fine. I add other things for flavor such as: onion, lemon, pepper or garlic.
I always loved a tuna sandwich with potato chips. Well, those are out, and now I have it with grapes. It sounds crazy, but they do seem to go together well. My sister started me on the grapes.
For me giving up Italian bread or other white breads and white pasta is difficult. So I am trying to just do them in moderation.
A book I had on order from the library just came in,The Flat Belly Diet You might have seen it discussed in Prevention Magazine. The book says if you follow the plan you can lose up to 15 lbs in 31 days. Anyone read or try this diet?
Click on the book cover for info on the book.
Alias,I take Prevention mag and saw the promo for this book. Let me know if it works! I just ran across my WW weight loss record booklet and realized I have lost 15 pounds since last Jan. Had no idea, but it is motivating me to keep it up. I am just trying the cut my serving sizes down, and eat reasonably healthy.
15 lbs ! Wow. Congratulations.
I would get the book from the library, not buy it. The plan is simple.
- Eat 4 meals a day. Each one is 400 calories. The book provides meal suggestions. If you don't choose their meal plan, you have to count calories. You will need to weigh all food to make sure your serving size is correct. so it's would be best to just select thier meal suggestions.
The diet probably works because it is basically a calorie restriction diet, not because of MUFA's or "Sassy Water". The 1600 calories is for an "average" person. That may be too much for shorter people.
- Eat one MUFA (monounsaturated fat)at each meal. The book provides a list. My favorite is dark chocolate chips like the ones you use to make choc. chip. cookies. Some others are sunflower seeds, olive oil and nuts. The amount is tiny. 2 tablespoons of nuts and seeds, 1/4 cup choc chips, and one tsp of oil.
The author claims that when test subjects where put on 3 different diets (high saturated fat, high carb, high MUFA) and ate the exact same calories, only the MUFA's diet lost the "belly fat". Why they didn't test it against a healthy low fat/high fiber plan (like the Dean Ornish diet), makes me question this diet.
- exercise is optional, but they include a whole chapter on it.
- At most meals the plan includes something called "sassy water" If they said drink 8 glasses of water, that wouldn't be interesting. So to make you drink water they put a twist on it.
In a pitcher: 9 cups water, 1 tsp fresh grated ginger root, 1 med cucumber cut, 1 med lemon cut, 12 mint leaves. Set overnight.
My opinion is drinking 8 cups of water will have the same result.
That's it. I think it may be a bit gimmicky. But if you follow it, I am sure it will work. I think you lose weight from the calorie restriction. But if the diet gets you to do that, than that's cool. I think unless you are really disciplined, counting calories can be difficult. You will also need to weigh all your food, too.
On TV today, they were talking about book called, The CR Way: Using the Secrets of Calorie Restriction for a Longer, Healthier Life by McGlothin & Averill. I requested it from the library. Anyone read it, or similar books like the 120 diet by Walford ? Anyone follow a CR diet?
click on cover for book info.
Well I lost the 2.6 lbs this past thursday that I gained the week before. But I went to a different location. Hopefully back home this week location will be a loss and not a gain. We got a good recipe last week portabello mushrooms. I have to get it from my sister I read it to her and and she wrote it down and I didn't get a copy. Maybe Val will put it in her newsletter than I'll be able to post the recipe here. It looks good. One girl lost 4 lbs that wasn't doing good last week from doing the alphabett ball. She bought a weighted ball. But now my sister explained how you do it. You kind of write the letters in the air. And bend your legs. I'll start it this week. Journaling only lasted 2 days. need to get back to doing that. Okay with water. Did walking at shore. Haven't since I got home. Not good.
donnajo
Back in Feb. I read a terrific book titled The Blue Zone. It explored the places in the world where people not only live to a very old age, but are also vibrant, active and healthy.
Well, today 4/7, the author is on Oprah. I highly recommend watching the show and reading the book.
Drat, I was by my sister's for dinner and forgot to ask her to make me a copy. But I will get a copy. I don't know if she left it at the shore but she said they were going back down tomorrow until saturday. I know it was with the full cap not just slices. And it was 1 pt for a mushrooms we I remember saying you could probably eat more than one. I used to make a good one from one of the WW books. And it's with peppers and you put it all in a wrap. If I can find that one I'll post it too.
Went to WW today and stayed for the meeting. Asked my sister to make a copy of the portabello mushrooms recipe so when I get it I'll post it. And I lost 1 lb this week. So I made sure to have my sister tell my brother in law when she called him on the phone and she reminded him why I told her to tell him because he made a comment the other night with something I was eating that I was going to gain this week and so did my niece. I was thinking ahead if I did have a gain then I was saying I stayed the same but I didn't have too. LOL. Now would I lie about something like that.
Donnajo
Good for you Donnajo. Every pound helps.
I haven't been doing so well lately -- but I am back on track this week. Eating less and exercizing more. LOL
I'm looking forward to the portabello recipe.
Barbara
Every pound helps (she says as she's eating a friendly's ice cream friendz and had mexican for early dinner/late lunch. Didn't have much of a breakfast (1/2 banana, 1/2 fiber 1 bar and maybe a 1 pt ww bar later in the day) i just want to get on the other side of 20 lbs total again. I some how got below 10 lbs. So I think I'm close to 10 lbs now maybe 8. But still. It just keeps sneaking up on me. I should be outside walking today but didn't want after needlepoint (gave the reason as being hungry and my jeans weren't the right pants to walk in LOL don't ask not tight in the waist)I kept saying to myself I would walk when I got home. Well coming online took care of that. I promise to walk first thing tomorrow morning.
Walked this morning. Took my ipod and walked first this morning. I had a good breakfast, lunch was not too good since it was one slice of pizza and a small soda (used a coupon for a new place) my library book that I reserved came in but went and the library is closed. Why they did that I don't know. The call came today. So guess I have to wait to monday. I went to the small store in town and went for a roll for tonight thinking I would make egg salad. They had shrimp salad with egg and some other type of salad on lettuce for one of their specials today so got that for tonight I was told the shrimp salad is very good. So will have that for dinner. It's probably too much so might leave some for tomorrow.
DJ--Walked this morning.
----------------------------
Good for you ! I've been doing well with the walking. A friend of mine joins me on the weekend and we do 5-7 miles. During the week, on most days I do 3-5 miles.
It has also been about a month now that I've given up white flour bread. I now only eat WW english muffins. And I haven't had any italian bread or white sliced bread. That is not easy for me. But I thnk I've got this goal down.
I guess this being a holiday weekend, I'll be off the diet, but I am going to try to not go crazy.
As for me, no gain, but no loss either.
Alias, congratulations. Giving up white flour bread is great progress, particularly given your fondness for Italian bread. Continued success to you & DJ!
deborah
Alias great on your walking. Today it's raining but I did park further in the shopping center parking lot. The bakery wasn't open when I went no sign nothing. So ended up having to go to the supermarket anyway. I still have leftover shrimp salad from last night and that will be for tonight. I did buy a hard roll again and even went to the little store in town and got a BLT on a hard roll guess I wasn't thinking when I ended up with 2 for the same day so maybe I will not have a roll tonight and eat cracker instead. I guess I should have did a dvd today but didn't yet. will try and get some type of exercise in by the end of the day. Really on a regular day I only eat if any bread sandwich thins or WW english muffin or if they don't have any english muffins I end up buy Arnold light english muffins. I bought a coconut cream pie to bring tomorrow and I know there is a chocolate cream pie which I'll eat. But I won't have a big piece. And I promise to walk if there is time tomorrow and monday extra. And will drink alot of water.
My sister belongs to a great gym that is only $10 a month. I think it is called Planet Fitness. I went as her guest the other day and it was a lot of fun. We did weights, treadmill, elliptical stepper and the recumbent bike.
I wish I had a gym like this near where I live for only $10 a month. What a bargain.
$10.00 a month is great. They were saying in WW last week one of the gyms in the area must have closed down the the girl that was going there said she hadn't lost weight in weeks. She was doing this certain exercise that was real heavy duty I forgot what it was called. But she said she joined another gym in the area but they don't have that exercise yet (or class) and in the weeks she hadn't done the class she lost 4 lbs. She nothing helped her loss before that. Anita had her trying taking certain things out of her diet and everything she was just stuck. So now they think it was the class she was taking. I didn't get to walk yesterday or today. I know I'm bad.

Cook Yourself Thin The Delicious Way to Drop a Dress Size
I'm not sure that I get this channel. Thanks for the info -- it gives me time to check it out.
Barbara
Lifetime is a pretty basic channel and quite popular. I think most cable systems offer it.
http://www.mylifetime.com/
Yes, I just put the TV on for a little while and I see that I do have Lifetime. Now all I have to do is remember to turn it on at 5PM. And that would be a week from Monday.
Thanks for the info.

I'll have to remember to watch it when it goes on. Yesterday wW was bad. I don't know why or how. Even my sister said the one thing I did eat last weekend could't make me gain that many lbs. I'm thinking it's salt with me. Since I was good about the water during the weekend I wasn't good during the week. Then today I ended up staying at WW they were celebrating a BD so I only 1/4 of a cupcake. They were big so they cut them in 4 pieces. So that was doable. But for lunch I went and had corn beef sandwich. Well he bought the wrong thing he bought a ruben which I didn't I didn't want all that other stuff on it. But I didn't say anything and only ate half. Plus the guy asked if I wanted regular fries or Thrasher fries (name of the restaurant) never was asked that before I thought the thrasher one were the ones they usually give you. No again they had two types of cheese on top with I believe ranch dressing on top of it. ugh. Never expected it. Pulled some fries from underneath that didn't have the stuff on it ate those and took the rest home. So I'll take the cheese off the ones left and still have a 1/2 sandwich. I really needed something sweet after that but was good. Kept thinking I had my dessert first. Oh I did walk before needlepoint. Now I have to start drinking the big container of water until next week. And did stay for the meeting. I'm going to start journaling even if I don't put points down. Maybe if I take that first step then I will put points for the stuff I know. At least it will be reality when you look it over seeing it in black and white. Have to keep remember Summer, bathing suit and capri and short sleeve weather. We are going to try and do the WW walking challenge that in June will sign up for the Relay for life.
donna jo
Interesting new show. Wonder if i'll remember to watch it?
DonnaJo, sorry for your poor showing. Best of luck with the Relay for Life!

Sorry to hear no progress on the weight front, Dj. I havn't seen a gain or loss.
On the salt front, however, I have been very good. Even my sister knows that I won't eat anything with salt now. So she bought me salt free potato chips when I was visiting her. Ok, it's not a health food. But it was nice to have that crunch along with a tuna sandwich. (no salt tuna fish of course). And it was nice of her to think of me. I have been very strict for quite a while now, so I don't mind the taste of no salt. I always buy the no salt version of any prepared food I buy like: canned tuna, catchup, nuts, canned tomato products etc. And if anything has over say 300 max I won't buy it.
Speaking of salt, did you see NYC is now trying to work on restaurants and the salt they put in food. I am all for this. They did the trans fat ban, and they had calories on menu's. If people want to eat a ton of sodium or calories... go ahead. All I ask is that as the consumer, I be give the information so I can base my decision on facts and not have to guess. And in the process jeopardize my health. As it is now, when I eat out, I have to just have the salad bar and a plain baked potato. If I had the info, maybe I could have the soup or something else. I forget what chain we ate at, this past Easter weekend at my sisters, but I couldn't enjoy anything because I didn't have the info.
Here is a link to one of the many stories on the NYC salt thing. http://www.newsmax.com/health/NYC_Target...
I know it's controversial, but when people kill themselves with the garbage food they eat, the almost always become ill with major diseases that cost a ton of money to treat. Heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes are preventable diseases for the most part. That raises the health costs for everyone. I don't' want to a nanny state, I only want to give information to people than they can make wise choices.
I've kept up with the no white flour bread. It's not so difficult as I thought it would be. I found a really tasty whole grain pasta. It's new by Barilla.
My exercise is a bit sporadic. The past two months I hurt my hip somehow. And now it's gone to my knee. I thought rest would help, but it hasn't. I also tried stretching, but that hasn't helped either. It is so annoying. My sister is no help, she just tells me I old. Thanks a lot. :)
Anyway, let's hope the lovely month of June lets us shed some lbs. Unlike you, DJ, I am not a summer person. I hate the sun and heat. And winter clothes hid a multitude of sins. This weekend is supposed to be really hot. Saturday in the 80's and Sunday close to 90. It's still Spring !! Good grief.
Anyone else make some changes in their diet they would like to share?
My big problems "Willpower" I do good one day and not the next. I need to get totally back on track exercise, journaling, more fruit and veggies. and I did eat more fruit this week and didn't up throwing any of it out. Have to go back to eating bran everyday for breakfast and not so often the english muffin everyday for breakfast. I was stopping buying those 100 calorie packs. I bought frittos my favorite. Been eating a pack almost everyday. Not good. Have to think about my health and blood pressure too. Salt. The pills (like my sister like to keep saying) will not only work along have to do diet. I have to go back to the dr. after a blood test in June again. So maybe by then I'll be below what I was the last time. I also want to ask the druggist when I get my pills probably tomorrow if it's possible that one of them is making me gain. I even it's up and down even with a good week. I know there are the TOM's but that is no all the time.
My willpower has been boosted by not wanting to get to the point where I need to take meds or get really sick. I'm healthy now and want to stay that way.
Oh I was just looking at a older post and I just want to say we didn't forget the portabello recipe it's not not being found for the time being. My sister can't locate it. She looked at the shore and at home. I'm pretty sure she took the paper out at the shore. I just forgot to look when I was down there last week. She gave me one piece of paper on easter saying that was it. But it wasn't the right recipe but she said she ripped off part of the paper and threw it out but hoped it wasn't the other recipe. Me I don't think that was on that piece of paper because it was a dip she made on easter (good seasons dressing and stuff you miss yourself and plain yogurt) pretty good my niece's husband was eating it like crazy and didn't know it was a WW recipe. We told my niece later in the day and she laughed. So we finally told Rob at the end of the day and asked if he knew what he was eating. He loves that good seasonings dressing stuff and he kind of thought it was with plain yogurt he said he bought plain yogurt earlier in the week by mistake and it was horrible and he wanted the recipe because he liked the drip. Anyway for some reason I haven't been getting the newsletters from the leader at the shore and don't know why. I'm hoping it's not because somehow it got in my spam mail and a not went back to her. I'm going to hold off until tuesday then email her to check if she is still sending them out or if I got off the list somehow. I haven't gotten anything since before easter. At first we thought it had to do with the holiday or Val having computer problems but still have nothing. I'm sure it would have been in one of those emails. I'll also ask her if she can email me a copy of the recipe too.
Alias, good for you & your easy move away from white flour bread! We use Barilla, too, and think it's fine. We've also tried the "Smart Pasta", Ronzoni, i think it is. I'm not finding these different from white flour, so maybe i'm just no pasta connoisseur. This shouldn't surprise me since the only pasta i ever crave is mac & cheese. I like most of the rest, just eat little of it (particularly compared to the sauce! LOL!)
Your sister must be younger! I've been experiencing some unexplained shoulder problems & have decided to blame that cold i had. Ok, that's a stretch but old age may be the culprit. It's pretty sad when the majority of my conversations with DH is about my shoulder & aches. Time for me to Watch It!
I hope your hip problem resolves soon.

I like the Barilla whole grain pasta too. Kind of gotten used to it now. And I had steamed veggies for dinner that were in a package that you could put directly in the microwave. Very little salt and no sauce or anything. I thought I would try one of these combinations as I don't usually get enough variety.
When I eat out it usually hasn't been that bad. But it would be helpful to have information because every once in awhile I get soup that I feel as if I can't eat. Given that I am not that strict I can't imagine how much sodium is in it.
Took a good long walk today -- a very warm day for April in Buffalo.
Barbara
Found these Light Whole Grain English Muffins that are not high in calories and have 8 grams of fiber. Thomas' Muffins I think -- so that should satisfy an occasional English muffin craving.
I seem to be on a never ending plateau but for now am satisfied not to be gaining.
Desperately hoping for some results.
Barbara
I'm depressed it's 92 degrees here and I'm home. ugh. Of course the weekend I'm home it's nice. Oh well. I went out for breakfast then food shopping so got some fruit and stuff. Then came home and put a chair outside and worked on a traveling needlepoint that I wanted to figure out a new stitch and how to fit it in. So I sat outside for maybe over an hour. Which I never do at home. Then I decided to run my bil BD card (it's tomorrow) over to their house so it's there for when he get's home. We are having a bar-b-q and cake on monday but I hadn't sent the card since I got him a gift cd to the fishing store they use at the shore. So I put their mail and newspapers in the house and put the gift on the kitchen table. I think I'm not even going to say a word about it if my sister calls. Let it be a surprise. Then I just got home and came online. Next up is probably reading. Guess I have to give in maybe tomorrow and find a few pairs of capris in my closet and see what fits and have them ready for when I need them. ugh.
I kind of ate some of the leftover corn beef sandwich for lunch and mostly threw out the fries that had the cheese all over them. Ugh they weren't good at all. Will make sure I never get stuck with those again. Tonight I bought brown rice California rolls. So will have that and a salad probably. So far today I'm good with water/decaf tea. Didn't journal but will tomorrow.
donna jo
Donnajo, I would be thrilled if it was 92 degrees here! We are so happy we can be outside working in the yard -- even though it is only 48 degrees -- but it isn't raining, so we are happy. Guess that's what happens when you live in the Pacific Northwest. I'm ready to start looking for property in Arizona! LOL!
I joined WW Online last week and it is a blast. I love interactive web sites. This is a place where you can track your weigh-ins, a place where you can track your food and it totals your points for you. You can also track your water, vitamins, daily vegetable and dairy servings, etc. Also recipes, ideas for exercise, the usual drill. The promotion is $65/3 months and then $13 or something each month after that.
I lost 5 pounds in the first week, need to start building in more exercise.
Carol, even though I am not an online WW subscriber, I occasionally post on the WW message board. Alias123
You can get a lot of good tips there.
I read/post on 3 boards: vegetarian board, Momentum plan, and Filling foods.
Congratulations on the 5lb lost. That is terrific !
For the first time in many weeks my weight has gone down a couple of pounds. It is amazing how a little attention is a benefit. And of course now that is encouraging to keep paying attention.

Way to go, Barbara. What did you change? Any tips for us? Let's hope by the end of May we all can say the same thing.
My downfall is still eating after 7pm. I have to be more strict. I am going to try to just have green tea or an orange after dinner.
I'm not going to the shore this weekend and my sister is going down tonight probably so it looks like I'm alone this week for WW. I'm thinking about skipping it. I need a break for a week. It would probably be a gain anyway. So maybe by next week it will be a loss. I got on my scale this morning and it's off I know but still it's showing in the oh no area and I really don't want to see or hear that. So hopefully in a week I'll be in a better area.
Alias Reader wrote: "My downfall is still eating after 7pm. I have to be more strict."
Same here, Alias. Actually, it's more after 10, when i sit down to watch tv shows i've taped. THAT is what i must cut out. I'm not tempted by food when i read late at night, only watching tv. Gotta stop that.

Eating at night is always a problem.
One of the major things I changed in the last week or so was salad dressing. I wasn't eating globs of it -- never do. But I switched back to the ones in the spray bottle. So instead of even 100 calories of salad dressing I am having 15 calories of spritz. More fruit for dessert too instead of goodies.
I just need to lose the winter weight.
Barbara

So funny you wrote that, Barbara. On some show, I can't recall which one, I saw the promo that if you cut just 100 calories a day, you would lose 10 lbs in a year. Conversely, eating a measly 100 calories more each day and you can see how easy it would be to pack on the pounds even if you think you are eating well. That is why doing a food jnl is helpful.
Me, I don't need a food jnl to tell me I shouldn't have purchased the 1/2 price Entimens chocolate chip crumb cake that was on sale last week. Yup, I ate the whole thing. :(
And it isn't as if taking away 100 calories of salad dressing are going to make you feel hungry. That's the totally silly thing.
And I don't need a food journal either to tell me when I am getting off track. The problem for me isn't lack of awareness, it is more letting bad habits take over from time to time. Especially in the winter when the streets are snowy and the combination of difficulty walking and the temptation of comfort foods take over.
