The Dragonlance books by Tracy Hickman are really good. I fell in love with the characters.1-Dragons of Autumn Twilight
2-Dragons of Winter Night
3-Dragons of Spring dawning
4-Dragons of Summer Flame
The next four are connected to the firts four by main characters
Twins
1-Time of the Twins
2-War of the Twins
3-Test of the Twins
Then comes....
1-The Second Generation
all by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis
Yes! That was what I was thinking. Sage advice from a frog in book #1 which I keep at my work desk. The final book, a bit woosey but also does not deal with the primary character directly.
<commenting under the Dealing with Dragons by Wrede series>
Very cool! Thanks for all the input, ladies! I'm going to have to put all of these on my to-read list (some are already on there). At least I will be a little more prepared the next time someone asks me for dragon books. Darned if I won't still think, Dragonlance! and then realize it's not mainly about dragons at all.If you think of any more (anyone) go ahead and post, I'll be checking this thread again!
Elizabeth Kerner's books Song in the Silence, Redeeming the Lost and The Lesser Kindred are very good. As is Mary Brown's The Unexpected Dragon Trilogy (there's four in the series actually if you count the original The Unlikely Ones. And then there is Marjorie B. Kellogg's Dragon Quartet (The Book of Earth, The Book of Water, Book Of Fire and The Book of Air: Volume Four of the Dragon Quartet).
Oh! And there's Katie MacAlister's Silver Dragon books (Up In Smoke and Playing With Fire (the Aisling Grey books also feature the Dragon Septs, in particular the Green Sept) if you like paranormal romance.
I know of at least two more series if not books, but for the life of me I can't recall.
Yes, I highly recommend Patricia C. Wrede's The Enchanted Forest Chronicles: Dealing with Dragons / Searching for Dragons / Calling on Dragons / Talking to Dragons! Very good, sweet books. Although I'd say they were more middle grade than YA.
How about The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik? The books are:Temeraire: His Majesty's Dragon,Throne of Jade,Black Powder War,Empire of Ivory, and Victory of Eagles.
Hope this helps!
Dragon Slippers and Dragon Flight by Jessica Day GeorgeDragon's Blood: The Pit Dragon Chronicles, Volume One,Heart's Blood: The Pit Dragon Chronicles, Volume Two, and A Sending of Dragons: The Pit Dragon Chronicles, Volume Three by Jane Yolen
Those are a few, I can probably come up with some more later on.
That's funny, because when I saw this post, I blanked out too. Here's some stuff from my bookshelf besides the ones you've mentioned. (and yeah... there is no dragons in Dragonlance--didn't think about that before).Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke (YA)
DragonSpell series by Donita K. Paul (Christian Fiction)
Icefire series by Chris D'Lacey (YA)
Magyk, Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage (YA, there's a dragon in it)
The Dragon's Eye: The Dragonology Chronicles, Volume 1 (YA)
That's all I can remember for now.
So someone asked me for dragon-centric books the other day and I totally blanked.
I mean, there's Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series, and Dragonlance, which I read so long ago that I can't remember if it involved a lot of actual dragons. And then I was like, buh... ? books?
I think she read Eragon already. and the next time I see her I'll have to remember The Smoke Thief. But beyond that I'm stumped, and I've really been thinking about it hard. Anyone else have good suggestions? Title/author/your humble opinion please--I really would like to know if you think it's worth reading.
