The 1000th Constant Reader
Only 13 to go! It's time to start thinking about an appropriate prize for number 1000 when he or she joins up.
1,000 members? We need to form an admissions committee. We may have members who do not know how to define metonymy, who do not know Allen Crocker's favorite writer, and who have never read The Shining Shining Path. And recent comments on the poetry section have made me suspect that some "members" may not fully appreciate "the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety" which the author of a recent article on Rilke describes.
The next thing you know we will have a retired carpet buyer slipping in the door.
Too late -- we have all of those already -- likely in the membership roll before we moved to Goodreads. Sh -- don't tell, though or they might evict us.
Thanks for the laugh this morning, Jim!
Ooh Jim, you're too hard on yourself and your comments in the poetry section. I think your comments are cute! You seem to have a complete comprehension of "disbelief, solitude and profound anxiety".:)
It's wonderful to have met so many great new folks here...I just love all the voices and change of pace around this new joint. I've met so many new cool folks and even more reading recommendations!
No, no, no, Sarita. Not even probation.
Just stick around for awhile, and you'll learn all those things.
Allan Crocker is the founder of Constant Reader, and his favorite author is P. G. Wodehouse. There's one gimme for you. See how easy this is going to be?
Well -- I didn't know that or if I ever did I forgot it and I've been around Constant Reader a long time. On a more positive note -- I had my first Wodehouse encounter this year and plan to tackle more of his -- certainly a good plan given the state of things generally -- laughing has to be a good antidote!
So Allan is to Wodehouse what Kent is to Mark Twain -- sort of? I won't forget this now, Steve, I promise.
I'll put together a little drawing/painting on paper for the 1000th participant...
I've got it right now by the front door...all I need is the go-ahead and a mailing address!
Hi Kim! Welcome to Constant Reader...I'll mail you a little drawing or something if you like...?
Send me a message via our message system here...
:)
Welcome, Jenni! We've been waiting for you. (g)How did you find the Constant Reader Book Group?
Congratulations to Constant Reader as well!
Loved the fireworks, Ruth! :) Very apropos.
Whew! :) Thanks for the warm welcome! I happened to see the group as a recently active group and decided to take a peek. I looked around a little, and decided to try it out. So the discovery was kind of accidental, but a happy discovery.I love the fireworks too! It really makes me want summer back again.
Anyway... I am an avid reader with a wonderful husband and two beautiful kids, so I don't get as much reading time as I would like, but I still manage to crank out a book every week or two. My oldest child is four, and she's turned into quite the cute bookworm. She loves to sleep with a stuffed animal, but she won't go to sleep unless she's holding onto a book.
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!
I'm also addicted to The Next Best Book Club and The Book Challenge groups on this site. Is it sad that I am more addicted to this site than any other?
Jenni,
Send a message to me as well with your mailing address for a copy of my book. Welcome to the group. I've only been here about six months myself but find it addicting.
Jenni, welcome to the group. I was following this thread for the past few days, and Ruth's fireworks reflect very well how we feel about you joining.
Conny
Ruth, how do you always manage to finde these wonderful photos and pictures? May I request one for my birthday ;o))?
Conny, I usually find them on Artcyclopedia.com, but the fireworks came courtesy of google.Sure, just let Jane know when your birthday is.
Hey wow!!!! Jenni, send me a message here within our messages sytems and I'll mail you a wee parcel with some artwork and postcards!Ruth, I love the fireworks. I pulled the image off onto my desktop in the hopes I can use it it on my blog on Tuesday night...praying, fingercrossing, hoping, wishing, meditating....
Ruth, thanks for telling us about Artcyclopedia.com.http://www.artcyclopedia.com/
I've bookmarked it and hope to explore it soon.
Constant Reader is a constant source of enlightening material.
Jenni, I love the idea of your daughter's holding onto a book while she falls asleep. That's just too cute an image.
Hi Jenni...just wanted to say welcome. I'm recovering from surgery. Otherwise I'd mail you a little something, too. Hopefully, a welcome is good enough from me :) Little did you know you'd be the recipient of so much attention, I'm sure!
Hi Karey,I hope that the surgery went well, and that the recovery is fast! :)
Thanks to everyone for the warm wishes - I've been enjoying reading up on the various threads, and am looking forward to being an active member.
By the way, my four year old daughter is currently sleeping with Terry Pratchett's The Color of Magic and Dora Saves the Snow Princess... how cute is that?
Well, Jenni, you certainly strike me as a worthy recipient of honors as the 1000th Constant Reader. A very pleasant first impression indeed.I'm so happy it didn't turn out to be some sullen. . . . . . ooops. Let me keep my focus on the positive rather talk of the negative that did not even occur.
Welcome!
Jenni - The Color of Magic...now that shows the blossoming of good taste in a 4 year old. I'm impressed (mind you, if the cover is a colourful as it is here in England, then that might add to the attraction, I suppose, but I'll ignore that possibility.)
Ricki-Actually the cover on our copy is red and rather plain - which just goes to show that my daughter is going to be quite the bookworm! She does have pretty good taste in books.
I'm fairly ocd when it comes to books - I really like them to remain in good condition... but seeing this has made me realize that a worn out book is a well loved book, and this book is well loved! :)
This group seems to be growing as fast as my infant grandson! 1000 was reached on 10/30 and the counter indicates 1028 today!
We're now one away from having 1111 members. It'd be a pity to lose such an attractive total afterwards, though. I suppose I'll have the 1234th member to look forward to, then.
As usual, I'm joining the discussion late. Exceptionally late, in fact.I'm curious about what the data for numbers of CR members mean. When the group registered its 1,000th member, was that member the 1,000th ever to register, or was that person the 1,000th member actively registered at that moment? If the later were the case and one member left the group, would the next person to sign on have become another "1,000th member"?
I ask this because my connections with CR go back as far as the Prodigy discussion boards and through the years on the webboard. At first, I had a relatively low membership number (all I remember is that it was below 100). At least once, maybe twice, the membership rolls were reshuffled for technical reasons, and my membership number suddenly shot way up (presumably because the numbers were reassigned in alphabetical order of surnames). When I rejoined CR the other day, I assume I was assigned yet another number.
What I'm saying, is simply that I've had at least three, possibly more, membership numbers in CR. Does that mean I've been counted as at least three members?
Just curious.

(I see that one of my old signature graphics works here)
