Jane (janeg) | 123 comments This is a thread for your favorite picture books. Many of us work at schools or with kids; I thought it'll be helpful to list your favorites here. Don't forget to click add book/author so we can spot the books easily.

I'll start: most recent favorite is Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale and The Incredible Book-Eating Boy.

Tracy (TeaLibrarian) | 56 comments We need to make a distinction here. There are many wonderful picture books for reading and then there are wonderful picture books for reading out loud to an audience - big pictures, small text, repetitive words or sounds to garner attention thus participation from the audience.

As for the former, yes, Mo Willems rocks. Have you read the sequel? David Wiesner is one of my favorites for introducing children to books on a one to one basis.

As for the latter, I'll throw in a book I just bought as it really grabs an audience of all sizes and ages: My Little Sister Ate One Hare by Grossman. It blends in easily for a magnetic board and also for audience participation if you wish to go for pageantry.
Tuesday My Little Sister Ate One Hare (Dragonfly Books)

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 172 comments Alethea, did you read the second book (to Knuffle Bunny I mean)? Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity

I mentioned somewhere, but the Pigeon Books I love!
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!, Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!, The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too!, The Pigeon Wants a Puppy! and The Pigeon Loves Things That Go! are the six currently out (and I own myself a pretty Pigeon PLushie that the kids at the center got for me). The kids in my class especially loved 'Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late' because they got to holler 'NOOOO' at the Pigeon all the time.

I'm also a big fan of the Doreen Cronin books! Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type, Giggle Giggle Quack, Diary of a Worm, Diary of a Spider, Diary of a Fly, etc etc...Doreen Cronin to see a full list. Clik Clak Moo is a particulary favorite of mine because of how the the cows get one over on the farmer XD

Alethea (frootjoos) | 475 comments My favorites right now are Delphine Durand (who mostly illustrates but she has a couple of brilliant books of her own), Maxwell Eaton III, and Oliver Jeffers.

In ascending order of preference:

Bob & Co A fun, somewhat irreverent Creation story (God makes a cameo appearance)
The Adventures of Max and Pinky: Superheroes (Adventures of Max and Pinky) Part II of the Saga of Max & Pinky
The Way Back Home Friendship and ingenuity come together!
How to Catch a Star There is a hard-to-get deluxe edition which comes with a little flashlight and star map
My House (Contemporary Picture Books from Europe) So packed with imagery--it took me an hour to read 30 pages
The Adventures of Max and Pinky: Best Buds (Adventures of Max and Pinky) Adorable, perfect with a cup of cocoa (don't forget the marshmallows)
The Incredible Book-Eating Boy Great for booklovers/hungry people of all ages
Lost and Found My absolute favorite tale of friendship and adventure!

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 172 comments ah! I forgot a book that my grandfather read to me as a child each October that recently got a deluxe edition of itself:
The Halloween TreeThe Halloween Tree

My paternal grandfather would sit me down the week before Halloween and each night he'd read me more of the story so that come Halloween Night, when I'd be dressed 'the cutest evil witch ever' (as he said) I'd be properly prepared to meet with Monshroud. He apparently had started the tradition with my older cousins, but none of them were as rivted by it as I was and begged to hear it again and again. I remember watching the animated version of it for the first time and feeling sad that granddad couldn't see it with me (he died in 1991, 3 years before the movie came out). I hope to afford this deluxe edition sometime before I have kids or my boyfriend's nephew Quinn grows too old for such things (he's 1 now, so I have time yet).

Alethea (frootjoos) | 475 comments Wow! I didn't know there was a picture book. I have to reread the original book, I can't remember it anymore.

That reminds me of two more favorites:
Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich
and
Frankenstein Takes the Cake

Adam Rex totally rocks!

and absolutely everything illustrated by Gris Grimly

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 172 comments I wouldn't call it a picture book per say--it has the original novel, the screenplay, 8(I think) unpublished short stories that lead to it and conceptual art for the cartoon as well as original art inspired by the novel. The front also features a pop iup 'Halloween tree' and the book comes in a metal case. Its worth the $100+ in my estimation...

Tracy (TeaLibrarian) | 56 comments Found this book I'd love to use for a program re. bullying for very young. Plus, numbers and colors to keep the children interactive with the program.

It's called One by Kathryn Otoshi. Has anyone utilized this in a program?

One

Liz (Jedimindreader) | 27 comments Here here! Alethea! Go Gris Grimly! Remember when I used to do storytime... I went crazy that Halloween ordering Gris Grimly things.
lol

Alethea (frootjoos) | 475 comments Tracy, I haven't heard of that one--I mean, that One ^_^

I'll try to get my hands on it!

For older kids, I think Diary of a Wimpy Kid might be a good bullying one. I can't think of any for younger kids right now.

Here's one for going to sleep early-- Little Hoot

Tracy (TeaLibrarian) | 56 comments Diary of a Wimpy Kid is very popular, esp. around tween guys - fantastic as that is a high ranking reluctant reader demographic.

I'll have to check out Little Hoot.
