Nancy H | 311 comments I just finished my first book in my State Tour for the new year of traveling: I read The Royal Mess by MaryJanice Davidson (10/4/11). It is set in an alternate-history Alaska and is a funny, quick romance.

Nancy H | 311 comments Just finished Here Today, Gone to Maui, by Carol Snow (10/7/11) It was a very quick read, a mystery/romance set in Hawaii that is a good chick-lit bit of escapist reading.

message 4: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just read Dead men Don't Get the Munchies by Miranda Bliss, set in Alexandria, Virginia. It was good but predictable. I still like the series, though.

message 5: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Glory in Death by J.D. Robb (10/13/11) is an excellent futuristic mystery set in New York City. I love the Eve Dallas and Roarke characters. I put off reading this series for a long time, but will definitely continue it.

message 6: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments The Chocolate Cupid Killings by JoAnna Carl (10/18/11) This is a good entry into the Warner Pier, Michigan "Chocolate" series by Carl. I enjoy the characters and the setting.

message 7: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments What a fantastic book! The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio by Terry Ryan (10/18/11) is the story of how Evelyn Ryan raised a family of ten children and ranher household by entering and winning contests. It is just amazing what she did to keep everyone fed, clothed, and with a roof over their heads!

message 8: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments A paranormal mystery featuring a young woman as 'the grim reaper', First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones was an okay read with some very funny parts. (10/20/11/)

message 9: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Poppy Done to Death by Charlaine Harris 910/26/11) This was an excellent entry in the Aurora Teagarden series. It had a great plot, great characters, and an interesting motive for the murder.

message 10: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Good Girls Don't by Victoria Dahl (10/30/11) - This was a good romance with a hint of mystery. It was a fun, quick read and it was set in Colorado.

message 11: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Casket Case by Fran Rizer (11/2/11) is an excellent entry in the Callie Parrish mystery series, set in South Carolina.

message 12: by Nancy H (last edited Nov 16, 2011 02:43PM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich (11/16/11) - I love this series and I think this is a particularly good entry. I can't wait to read the next one. It is set in Trenton, New Jersey.

message 13: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Just finished One Bad Apple by Sheila Connolly. (11/22/11) It takes place in rural Massachusetts, and the main character owns an old colonial house with an apple orchard. It is a good start to this series, and I am looking forward to reading the next ones.

message 14: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Getting Lucky by Susan Andersen (11/26/11) is a quick, fun romance with a bit of adventure/kidnapping thrown in. A large part of the story takes place in Washington State when a Marine and his sister's friend go to the rescue of the sister and her fiance, who have reportedly been kidnapped by unknown persons.

message 15: by Nancy H (last edited Nov 30, 2011 08:50PM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh (11/30/11) This is an amazing book about a young woman who has been in and out of foster homes and group homes for all of her young life. She discovers a gift for using flowers to help people, and eventually is able to help herself. It is set in San Francisco, California.

message 16: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool is a great story. It is a very touching historical novel.

message 17: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Crawlspace by Sarah Graves is another good entry in her Home Repair mystery series. It has non-stop action that grabs you from page one.

message 18: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Bones of a Feather by Carolyn Haines is the latest in the Sarah Booth Delaney mystery series. It is quite good. So far this series has been consistently satisfying.

message 19: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Another good entry in the Cucake Bakery series, Death by the Dozen is a quick, easy, and fun read, sort of like eating one of the cupcakes featured in this story.

message 20: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just finished a book set in New Orleans called French Quarter by Lacey Alexander. It is the first in her "Hot in the City" series, and is a very steamy romance.

message 21: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris is an excellent mystery with great characters set in a small Arkansas town. It was so good I couldn't put it down!

message 22: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Grave Surprise by Charlaine Harris (1/17/12)was just as good as the first one. I couldn't put it down, either, and can't wait to move on to the next one.

message 23: by Nancy H (last edited Jan 24, 2012 09:03PM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Joanne Fluke's Lake Eden Cookbook (1/24/12) is a great book that combines mouth-watering recipes with the characters and plot of her Lake Eden mystery series. This book is a a hoot! (For a more detailed review, see my 'Read' shelf.)

message 24: by Nancy H (last edited Feb 12, 2012 05:38PM) (new)

Swamplandia! - set in Florida (2/9/12)
A Lady Like Sarah - set in Texas (2/10/12)

message 25: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just read an excellent chick-lit book called And One Last Thing by Molly Harper (2/18/12). It was a good story and was written very well. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.

message 26: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments The Warrior Sheep Go West by Christine and Christopher Russell. (2/23/12) This is a cute fantasy in which a group of sheep go to Las Vegas to take on their enemy, "Red Tongue", but actually end up rescuing their owners. Middle-school students who like tongue-in-cheek humor and animals with human characteristics and abilites with like this one.

message 27: by Nancy H (last edited Mar 02, 2012 11:51AM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just finished two very excellent novels:
Never Sit Down in a Hoopskirt and Other Things I Learned in Southern Belle Hell by Crickett Rumley (2/26/12) -A great YA novel set in Alabama that can be enjoyed by adults as well
An Ice Cold Grave by Charlaine Harris (2/27/12)- another excellent mystery in her Harper Connelly series set in North Carolina
Great reading!

message 28: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Will Work for Prom Dress is a great YA chick-lit story by Aimee Ferris. Quigley just wants to get in to art school, but her friend Anne just wants to get a good dress and a good date for the prom. The book is funny - what the girls did to get fired from the pizza factory - and touching - what happens when the young man Quigley wants to date tells her she isn't good enough for him. The book is set in Rhode Island.

message 29: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Excellent family story set in Vermont - The Sweetness of Salt (3/19/12)

message 30: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Finished two more states with really good books:

Indiana - The Day I Wore My Panties Inside Out (4/11/12)
West Virginia - The Diva of Peddler's Creek (4/11/12)

message 31: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just read Our Lady of Immaculate Deception, set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is a good, quirky, and fast mystery with interesting characters. (5/1/12)

message 32: by Nancy H (last edited Jun 09, 2012 09:09PM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Just finished Noah's Compass by Anne Tyler, which takes place in Maryland. This book grabbed me at the beginning and I could not stop reading, but I didn't like the ending. It is about a 61-year-old fifth grade teacher who loses his job, moves to a smaller apartment, and goes to bed his first night there, only to wake up in the hospital with no idea of what happened or how he got there. There are many more story lines occurring, and overall is interesting, but I felt let down by the ending.

message 33: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just finished Whiskey Sour and it is a great mystery, a police procedural set in Chicago. (6/18/12)

message 34: by Nancy H (last edited Jul 05, 2012 09:47PM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig (7/5/12) This is a great book set in Montana in the early 20th century. It is the story of a motherless family in need of a housekeeper and the housekeeper who comes to take the job. Told through the eyes of the oldest son, it is a surprising and mostly heartwarming glimpse of life and people trying to make a living dryland farming. The three boys must attend a one-room school, and there is a most enterprising teacher assigned to teach them. A very good read, especially for teachers or anyone interested in education in this time period.

message 35: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just finished Books Can Be Deceiving by Jenn McKinlay, and it is a very good start to a new series. I enjoy her 'Cupcake Bakery' mysteries, and this is a new one set in a library, a setting dear to my librarian's heart! It is set in Connecticut. I will be reading more in this series.

message 36: by Nancy H (last edited Oct 04, 2012 06:19PM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I read I'm In No Mood for Love by Rachel Gibson, set in Idaho. (10/2/12) It is a good, quick romance.

Hattie wrote: "Your two lists look wonderful."

Thanks, Hattie. I need to read faster, though, if I want to have them finished by the end of the year!!

message 39: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just added New Hampshire to my States list by reading Bookplate Special by Lorna Barrett. It was an interesting cozy set in a fictional book lovers' town, in which the main character has a friend who is killed within hours after she kicks her out of her apartment.

message 40: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Just finished In the Land of Second Chances, set in Nebraska, and about a traveling salesman who comes to this small town just in time to help people who are having difficulties. But what is he really selling? Hope, faith, and much more.

message 41: by Nancy H (last edited Nov 06, 2012 08:40PM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I just read Open Season by C.J. Box, set in Wyoming, which tells the story of game warden Joe Pickett, who gets in the middle of a crime spree involving illegal hunting and murder.

message 42: by Hattie (new)

Hattie Norman (goodreadscomgoodreadscomTea) | 120 comments I might have that one. Thanks for the reminder, Nancy.

Nancy H | 311 comments Hattie wrote: "I might have that one. Thanks for the reminder, Nancy."

It's a good one, Hattie. I thought it was going to be slow, but about halfway through I couldn't put it down and ended up finishing it all in one sitting.

message 44: by Nancy H (last edited Nov 11, 2012 06:39PM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I've "read" two more states:
Wisconsin - Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Brink (11/9/12)- a very good classic
Utah - Tutu Deadly by Natalie M. Roberts (11/11/12)-
This is my favorite type of mystery: intriguing and funny main character, good plot, hunky romantic interest, and an unexpected ending. I will definitely look for more by this author.

Only six more states to go!

message 45: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments One more down, five to go: I just finished Nearly Departed in Deadwood, set in Deadwood, South Dakota. It was a very good mystery with lots going on.

message 46: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I've finished another good one, this time a gardening mystery set in Oregon: Bleeding Heart by Mary Freeman (11/17/12)

Only 4 more states to go!!

message 47: by Nancy H (last edited Dec 05, 2012 09:58AM) (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I have completed two more states with really good books:
Delaware - The Civil War Diary of Amelia Martin by Karen Hesse (12/3/12)
Iowa - Calamity Jayne by Kathleen Bacus (12/2/12)

Both of these books were excellent in their own ways. The Bacus was a really good chick-lit mystery, and the Hesse was a good historical fiction for young adults.

Only two more states to go, and I have already started the books for those states.

message 48: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments Thanks to this challenge and my desire to read a book set in every state, I just finished one of the best books I have read all year: The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich (12/6/12). It is set in North Dakota, and it is an intriguing novel with a unique plot. I was so amazed by this book that I just couldn't stop reading it once it caught my attention. The author writes with such exquisite detail, but yet keeps the reader focused on the action of the plot by the sheer power of the characters. I have read several books by this author, and this is by far my favorite.

message 49: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 311 comments I also just finished a book set in Washington, D.C., written by Margaret Truman: Murder at the F.B.I. This is a quick mystery that is very good and raises a lot of ethical and moral questions regarding government politics and policy.

Now I have completed books set in 49 states and in D.C., so I just have one more book to do to meet my goal!

message 50: by Nancy H (last edited Dec 16, 2012 08:05PM) (new)
