934927 Since our little group is growing I thought if you are intereseted everyone could leave a little blurb about themselves.

I guess I'll start. I love to read & love this site. I live in the midwest which I enjoy a lot except for the extremely cold winters. I'm a working mother. Love being a mom.

I love all sorts of books except for romance novels. I enjoy Mark Twain, EM Forster, Shakespeare, McEwan to name a few. My favorite poet hands down is Rod McKuen.

It's great to read. I love getting recommendations and just reading!

1453604 Hi! I'm Leah--another HS English teacher and I love it!

I love fiction but have recently been caught up in non-fiction; I just finished "the Glass Castle" and I want to start "Running with Scissors" soon.

My favorite books are ones by Chaim Potok and my favorite of ALL TIME is Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible."

message 3: by Emilee, Smurfy! (new)

934927 I loved all my Highschool English teachers! I should have been an English teacher.

message 7: by Ashley (new)

257698 Leah, be sure to read "Dry" by Augusten Burroughs. That is a sequel memoir to Running with Scissors

565777 Hey everyone,
I'm Christina and I live in Denmark together with my boyfriend, our daughter Ronja (almost 4 months old), our cairn terrier Kayleigh and syrian hamster Nefertiti.
I love animals and I love to read! Besides that, I scrapbook, follow NFL and play a bit of World of Warcraft - but all of these are more or less on hold because of Ronja.
I just finished my Master's degree in philosophy and am currently on maternity leave currently.
My favourite authors are Joyce Carol Oates and John Irving - and I think the list soon will include Haruki Murakami as well. I love the Swedish author of books for children, Astrid Lindgren, and my daughter is named after one of her books. :-)

message 9: by Fiona (new)

1356469 I'm Fiona and I have backache and neck ache and I'm feeling very stuffed fool of stuff-that's-bad-for-me-but-who-cares-its-christmas.

I'm from south England.

I obviously love book otherwise I wouldn't be here. I love too many books to mention. I love YA fantasy mostly and I'm reading Little Women at the moment.

message 10: by Prettymisslara (new)

983498 Hello my name is Lara I am a stay at home mother of five, however my husband says that for being a stay at home mother I am never at home. I just recently started a book club at my sons junior high school so I might be asking Fiona for some suggestions. I love to read however I cannot seem to find the time to read as much as I would like to. I am seriously contemplating a life of fast food I figure I can free up 3 - 4 hours a day to read by doing that. But that idea is still in the planning stages.

message 11: by Kathy (new)

971945 Hello all! My name is Kathy. I'm a substitute teacher for high school, mostly English. I have taught English and writing for writing portfolios, but I didn't retire from teaching, just started working for my husband's business before they closed it after 50 yrs. in operation. I got to do two long-term English subs last year for teachers on maternity leave and loved it. I have a Masters in Library Science and would love to find a high school librarian (or media specialist, as it is now called) position, but they are hard to come by around here. My husband is in the Army and just returned from Qatar today. He will fly home tomorrow for the Christmas holidays. Yay!

I love all different kinds of books, but my favorite is mystery with historical fiction added in. Some subjects that interest me are book censorship (against it, of course), the Black Death (both in the 1300's and 1600's) in England, boys and reading (did my research paper for my Masters on this subject), the Middle Ages, dowsing, and much more.

Some favorite authors are Laurie R. King (her Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series), Edgar A. Poe, Khaled Hosseini, Agatha Christie, Sena Jeter Naslund, Ariana Franklin, Geraldine Brooks, Sue Monk Kidd, and Amy Tan. Some favorite books are A Widow For One Year by John Irving, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, The Girls by Lori Lansens, The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Mistress of the Art of Death and City of Shadows by Ariana Franklin, Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund, Saving Fish From Drowning by Amy Tan, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, all the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes books by Laurie R. King, Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, Stones From the River by Ursela Hegi, the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris, the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, the BFG by Roald Dahl ... OK, I have to stop now. I have at least 50 favorites.

Anyway, I love to read. I just finished Company of Liars by Karen Maitland and loved it.

message 13: by Donna (new)

Did I miss anything???

message 14: by Kelly (new)

1751381 Hi! My name is Kelly, I am 25 and I live in Southeast Missouri. I teach Kindergarten through fifth grade music to some wonderful students, and I also assist with the high school band. After school I give private lessons on guitar, piano, snare drum, bass guitar, and voice. It keeps me busy. I live alone...well, not exactly alone, I have two cats, Ally and Allera and a beagle/lab mix, Tucker. Tucker and I love to go for walks around our town...he also REALLY enjoys meeting new people.

I enjoy reading for pleasure, but I usually don't have time for it (although I am carving time into my schedule). My favorite books are Gone with the Wind and Pride and Prejudice. But I am always willing to try new books...who knows I might find a new favorite (Julia's Chocolates is definately a runner up!)

message 15: by Lori (new)

1769862 I'm Lori. I'm a 21 year old English major. I'm from Oklahoma (and I can't wait to get out of here). I love reading. That was why I became an English major, which was a bad idea. I keep having to read books because of the author, rather than the actual merit of the book and it drives me insane.

I generally avoid doing my homework so I can read for me because I think I get more out of reading something I like than whatever the professor assigns. I do feel a little guilty, but that also makes the reading all the more precious. I carry big purses with me because I always bring a book along, no matter where I'm going.

I don't think I could pick a favorite genre or author. But I love Gone With the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catch-22, and Pride and Prejudice. One of the books I'm currently reading (I'm reading 7) is Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and I really like it, so it might be a favorite someday.

And that's enough for now.

message 16: by Daybo (new)

1540288 Hi I'm Lisa. I have 2 wonderful teenagers and one 20 year old. I am married and have been married for 21 years. I work as a receptionist at a hospital nearby. I love to read, scrapbook, cross-stitch and play online games with my husband; like World of Warcraft.

I am currently reading an Agatha Christie novel. First time I have ever read her books. So, far I am liking it. :~)

message 18: by KrIsTiE fAyE (new)

707820 I'm Kristie, almost 30 (less than 12 days). I am an unemployed teacher.....(the politics in schools sucks). I live in Jersey with an immature roommate. I coach field hockey and am in our busy indoor season right now.....It takes over my life and my reading time. I tend to be MIA over weekends. I love just about any genre, except romance, but I can choke down an good fantasy novel. I love Jodi Piccoult, Harlen Coben and Richard Laymon!

1831551 Hello! I just joined the group so I thought I'd add my two cents. I live in England, but I'm an American. I's stationed here with the military for another 1 1/2 years. I'm 25, I've been married for almost five years and I'm loving life right now. I've been an avid reader since before I can remember and read as much as I can. If a book passes the good-first-page test I give it, I'll read it. I like to travel and have had ample opportunity since I moved to Europe. I miss America though and look forward to my trip back this summer.

I also read through the other posts and want to say Happy Birthday to Kristie! (message 18)
