1259216 Hi Destiny and welcome! Good luck with your new book. As for romantic suspense, try reading _Loving Frank_. I just started reading it and the hook is in. (g) It's been a while since I've had a book call to me like this one. Hope yours will do the same.

Please let us know when your new book is released.

BTW, the link you provided didn't work. I'll try it again later. -Joy

73589 Hello All,

I'm nowhere near Glens Falls, probably the closest I've come is Vestal, New York, but I was just passing through. Mostly I'm in Los Angeles. I write about movie history, but I read most everything. Check out my goodreads profile and my website: http://www.rsbirchard.com

Bob

message 10: by Joy H. (of Glens Falls), Moderator (new)

1259216 Hi Bob,
Vestal is near Binghamton, NY, quite a few miles from Glens Falls.

I looked at your website. That's quite a list of Film and Television Credits you have.

Your book _CECIL B. DEMILLE'S HOLLYWOOD_ sounds very interesting. I've put it on this group's bookshelf. Below is a link to it:
Cecil B. DeMille's Hollywood

Have you read William Goldman's books? He tells about the ups and downs of screenwriting. I've put 2 of them on this group's bookshelf. Goldman got his lucky break when Paul Newman agreed to star in Goldman's screenplay, "Harper" (1966).

Hollywood has always been fun to read about.

message 11: by John (new)

429071 Hi Everyone,

My name is John Allen. I'm the author of Christmas Gifts, Christmas Voices. It's been out for a few years in hardback, and this year it's been released as an Amazon Kindle book.

In conjuction with my book, I wrote a song that plays a role in the story, "The Spirit of Christmas." You can listen to the song by clicking the following link:

All the best,

--John

message 12: by Joy H. (of Glens Falls), Moderator (new)

1259216 Hello John! Welcome to the group. I look forward to reading about your book and hearing your Christmas song. It's so nice to have you with us!

message 13: by Robert (new)

73589 I realize that Glens Falls in not particularly near Vestal, it's just that Vestal is about the nearest I've been to Glens Falls.

Yes, I have read William Goldman's books about working in Hollywood, thanks for reminding me, I'll add them to my list. I preferred "Adventures in the Screen Trade" to "What Just Happened?", but both are well worth reading.

And, thanks for adding "Cecil B. DeMille's Hollywood" to the group bookshelf. I'm prejudiced, of course, but I think anyone who'e inteerested in how movies were made in Hollywood's golden age will enjoy it.

message 14: by Joy H. (of Glens Falls), Moderator (new)

1259216 You're welcome, Robert. I'm looking forward to reading your book.

message 15: by Donna (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Hi All, John , I have to say that the song and graphics were spectacular. The colors and designs were breath taking. I think if the book is like the song you will have a winner. I just had to comment on this.

I will now introduce myself. My name is Donna Bowen. For 53 yrs. I lived in upstate NY. I was born in Troy, married and moved to Clifton park and 9 yrs. ago moved to Charlotte,NC. I have to say the winters down here aren't as cold with little snow. Our winter problem down here is black ice.
I am disabled, so I read a lot of mysteries, medical novels, romance/suspense, and thrillers. I wrote to Joy because of where she is from. We have been friends, since.

Happy reading to All, Donna

message 16: by Joy H. (of Glens Falls), Moderator (new)

1259216 Hi Donna,
What a nice surprise for me to return from being away downstate and to find you as a new member here.

Donna was one of the earliest goodreads.com members to contact me and offer her friendship. As she said, she was originally from upstate NY and that was why she got in touch with me. That was so nice of her.

Thanks for joining, Donna, and thanks for posting here. Hope to hear more from you at this group.

BTW, I listened to John Allen's Christmas song and enjoyed both the melody and the meaningful lyrics.

783966 Hello Group. Thanks to Joy for inviting me. My name is Malcolm Watts and I am a novelist, poet, and non-fiction writer. I am also an award winning creative photographer. My writing website is www.authorsden.com/malcolmwatts. You can check out my novel, Reflections from Shadow, a dark coming of age story of the 60's with connections to WWII. I am a retired social worker/psychotherapist living in Canada near Toronto. Currently I am reading Flames Across the Border, by Pierre Berton. The book is the second volume regarding the war of 1812 between U.S. and British North America. His books are well researched and accurate but written in a wonderful narrative style that takes you to the past and tells you about the people who lived them and their lives. Berton, now deceased, is Canada's best popular historian having written 30 books about Canada. Check out his books if yo like history. Nice to meet you all. Malcolm

1259216 Hi Malcolm,
You have an interesting background. Thanks for introducing yourself and thanks for the book recommendations.

Below are 2 links (via book covers) to the two books you mentioned. The first link is to the book you wrote. It sounds very interesting. One of the first sentences in the review puts the hook right in: "Jared wonders why he is different from other children." Now I'm wondering too. (g)
Reflections from Shadow

The book below is the book you recommended and are currently reading:
Flames Across the Border: 1813-1814

Also, below is an active link to the your website which you also mentioned: ===>

Reading is my passion. For me, if spare moment is not spent reading, it is a wasted moment.
I read a variety of genres, but sci-fi/fantasy rules my heart. Total escapism.

1702471 Thanks, Joy, for inviting me to join your book club. I pass through Glens Falls on my way to Paradox Lake in the Adirondacks, and I hope I get to meet this group in person.
My book, THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE: A MEMOIR, will be published by Alfred A. Knopf just before Mother's Day 2009. Read all about it on my profile! Happy to have new friends!

We've camped in our RV at the state campground at Paradox Lake. We've had several family get-togethers there. It's a beautiful spot.

I wish you much luck with your new book.

Welcome to our group. We're happy to have you.
Best wishes to another Adirondacker,

message 27: by Debra (new)

1135162 Joy, we have to stop meeting like this! I followed your link and joined the group, so hello to everyone. My name's Debra Purdy Kong and I'm a mystery author from Port Moody, British Columbia. I've written two amateur sleuth mysteries set in Vancouver and here in the suburbs, where I live.

My protagonist, Alex Bellamy, is a accountant/computer geek who was fired from his job with Revenue Canada in book one (called Taxed to Death) and is trying to find his way in life in book two, Fatal Encryption. Needless to say, things aren't going too well for him, professionally and personally.

message 28: by Nancy (new)

1702471 Joy, I know exactly where you camp and love that place. Looking forward to running into you at the Paradox General Store! Hope you get a chance to check out my book's description -- all comments are welcome. Nancy

1259216 Hi Nancy - It would be great to meet you at Parodox. Email me when you're in the area when the weather warms up. (grin) I'll drive up to meet you. I'll be coming through Ticondoroga from Hague. Maybe we could meet at Burleigh's Luncheonette in Ti. It's a great old fashioned coffee shop.

Below is a link to your book:

Sounds very enticing.

message 31: by Cindy (new)

365038 Thanks Joy for inviting me to join your group; though I am nowhere near New York! We have been living near Phoenix, Arizona for 6 years now, though we are originally from Illinois and most of our family remain in Illinois.
I love to read just about anything; history, biographies and autobiographies, books about different places, mystery/suspense, poetry, just all kinds of books. Since joining Goodreads, my to be read list has just grown and grown! Usually you will find me reading a novel but also reading something educational, though lately I've been kind of slacking in that departement.
I enjoy photography and scrapbooking, arts and crafts, writing short stories mostly for the children in our family, genealogy, and spending time with family and my little dog Abby!
I am excited to meet all of you and excited to see the number of authors in this group. Hope everyone is ready for Thanksgiving and will have a great one!

message 32: by Joy H. (of Glens Falls), Moderator (new)

1259216 Hi Cindy,
Welcome to the group! I'm happy to see you here. We love out-of-towners! Remember, this is a tourist area. (lol) Thanks for telling us about yourself. Hope to hear more from you.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I hope I will be ready when the kids come in the door! (g) Can't wait!
Best wishes,
Joy

1259216 You're welcome, Debra. We aim to please. :)

I love the book-picture-links (icons)! They take me back to my picture-book days. It took me a while to give up picture books as a kid. Guess I'm still a kid. :)

840222 Hi Joy and co.

I'm a UK-based author, on GoodReads to chat about books and - of course - to encourage people to have a look at mine.

I write Science Fantasy: you can see a couple of GoodReads reviews of my first book Cloak of Magic from members of the SciFi/Fantasy group. But I was seeking to write Science Fantasy for people who didn't like Science Fantasy, so I'd recommend it if you just want a good read, a character-driven plot and a bit of depth.

more on http://www.shehaios.co.uk, including a download of the first 3 chapters.

Best wishes to your book club, and keep reading!!

Nophoto-f-25x33 Hello My name is Lisa. I just moved here to Glens Falls from Cleveland, OH in August. My husband and I love the new library. We visit at least once a week. Right now I'm on a real Neil Gaiman kick. At the moment he is my favorite living author, and he may replace Alexander Dumas or Jane Austen as my favorite authors of all time. I love to read and have been reading ever since I can remember. I'm so glad I found a site to connect to other readers in the area.
