Eloise, that sounds beautiful. It's so important to find books for children that address death sensitively, as a fact of life. P1 have been reviewing Heaven which I believe Jeanette introduced them to in Science.

Lovely reviews, Jon and Shoeb. I used Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? a lot with children in the early stages of learning English to help them learn colours. Jon, The Troublesome Tooth Fairy sounds like great fun.

Thanks, Leanne, two great reviews. I have taught Y4 children who adored Tracy Beaker because of the TV series, and were able to identify with the turbulent home life of Tracy- remember that many children watch EastEnders, Coronation Street etc with some hair raising storylines!

Thanks Jon. What did you think about Emily Gravett's illustrations? Helen wasn't sure about Wolves.

message 64: by Jon (new)

Jon Saunders | 15 comments I haven't read Wolves but I thought her illustrations in Cave Baby were great. The style gives a good sense of texture and movement and although I thought that in the middle of the book the colours and tones were a little dark they really made the bright colours used at the end of the book stand out.

Her website http://www.emilygravett.com/ has games and resources on it, which could be very useful to introduce her books with.

Hi Alison, thanks for putting up guidelines to using goodreads. It really helped.

I'm glad they helped! I'm proud of that guide. I had to re-learn how to take screen shots to write it!

Great review, as always! I was delighted to see that some poems by Shel Silverstein that were unpublished at his death have been selected by his family for publication: Every Thing on It

I agree; the onomatopoeia (tick tock) etc makes it a great book for EYFS- the isolating sound aspect of phonics would benefit. Children could make simple instruments to play along while the teacher read the book.

Dr Seuss books are often very popular with children who are reluctant to read. The rhyme and rhythm carry them along, and the wacky illustrations are always engaging!

Great reviews, Helen and Miayruffah. I'm glad you enjoyed Cave Baby's illustrations, Helen; Emily Gravett is one of my favourite new author/ illustrators. Look out for Meerkat Mail! Miayruffah, I remember the joy as a teacher of Oxford Reading Tree after the tedium of some other reading scheme books...

message 77: by u1124876 (new)

u1124876 UEL | 27 comments Hi Alison,

I did find Emily Gravett's illustrations much more agreeable in Cave Baby and was pleasantly surprised to see two such major names collaborating together in this book.

I have seen Meerkat Mail on Amazon and will invest in it as you recommend it.

Thank you as always

Children love stories about naughty children- it's sort of wish fulfilment, I think! And short stories mean that confident readers at the end of Y1 can often read them with enjoyment.
