Harry Harrison is a big influence for me. I loved Deathworld and the Stainless Steel Rat books.

Bill the Galactic Hero was one of the first series of books I ever read. I have to check this out.

Harrison is great. I'm not sure he's as popular as he was years ago. I wrote a
post about Deathworld at a few years back. You can check it out if you like.
The writing in Deathworld is amazing. You might also note it was written entirely from the main character's POV. Not a 1st person though, it really keeps you captivated. Too bad it hasn't been made into a movie. CGI has caught up to this book. It would be awesome!
Bill the Galactic Hero was also pretty good. Not sure the humor translates all that well today, but it's wonderful to see satirical Mil SF. Not many books like that around these days.
