2785873 @ Sheila- I LOVED Bridge to Terabithia. In fact, I'm pretty sure I still have my original copy from middle school.

2831847 Am a bit of a book-snob and can't stand reading 2nd hand/library novels! So I end up buying A LOT of books :)
This week I've bought:
Wolf Hall - Hilary Mantel
Addition - Toni Jordan
The Gift - Cecilia Ahern
The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Othello - Shakespeare
The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K Le Guin

... And it's only Wednesday... And I have a basket on Amazon waiting to be ordered... Oops!

2149039 The Blue Notebook - James A. Levine

A haunting yet astonishingly hopeful story of a young Indian prostitute who uses writing and imagination to transcend her reality.

All of the U.S. proceeds from this novel will be donated to the International and National Centers for Missing and Exploited Children (http://www.icmec.org).

message 656: by Cindy (new)

365038 Oh Rose, I keep seeing this book and I keep passing it up! I'll be anxious to see what you think!

message 657: by T Byrd (new)

1930380 Rose, I loved loved the Blue Notebook - haunting is so true - I can't pull my thoughts from the exploited children. I had the feeling I had read it before or seen a similiar movie. Very well done I thought. Then I feel slightly quilty for being drawn to and captivated by such a heart wrenching reality.

Shadow of the Wind is a brilliant book, haven't read the others

Yeh I've been wanting to read it for a while. After I saw that it was basically a book about a book, I knew would be good! The Angel's Game looks really good as well - have you read that?

2391692 Well I was in a bit of a funk yesterday evening, so I headed to the library to cheer myself up and what do you know - the used bookstore was open :o)

I bought The Longest Trip Home A Memoir, Sense & Sensibility, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, and March. All for about $6.

I also rented The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, since I've heard so many good things about it.

I've got March to read. It looks really good. Have you read Little Women?

message 662: by Sarah (new)

2391692 No, but I have Little Women on my TBR shelf at home!

message 663: by Harriet (new)

2831847 Little Women is amazing :) As is Good Wives, the first sequel. I hope March is good... I'm always a bit sceptical when authors use parts of my favourite classics to write their own novels. (Don't even get me started on the whole Zombies, Seamonsters and Austen thing...!) Hopefully this will be good though!

message 664: by Sarah (last edited Oct 22, 2009 04:30AM) (new)

2391692 LOL, I like the Austen monster-ripoffs! Well, I should say I like the idea of it - I think it's fun. I only got to read part of P&P&Z though, I'm hoping to finish reading it soon. And I heard the author of that is coming out with a new one: Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. I can't wait to try it :o)

message 665: by Ally (new)

2439273 I've just bought Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. - I just saw the musical version in London's West-End last weekend and I absolutely loved it so I'm dying to have a go at the book too...although I hear its a bit darker than the show.

Yeh, I should probably read them before I judge... But the idea of someone ruining Austen is just too much for me to handle! I can deal with Little Women (just), but Jane Austen is just pushing it a bit to far!
Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter? How random!

Ally, lucky you :) I really want to see Wicked!

2785873 Harriet- I'm a huge Austen fan and was surprised by how good Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was. I expected it to be mostly terrible but I kind of loved it. There were always a couple of points in P & P that annoyed me so it was kind of awesome to see some of those characters get a beat down. :)

Hmm... I might give it a go then. I'm kind of curious about it anyway, but if an Austen fan likes them, then maybe I will too... Maybe i'll add it to my tbr list and think about it!

message 669: by Sarah (new)

2391692 It seems Austen fans are pretty divided over the whole monster-remake thing. To some, it's just ruining good literature, and to others, it's just something silly and fun.

I've tried to start reading Wicked before, but it just didn't grab my attention. Maybe I need to see the play first! I think it's coming to my city soon anyways.

1219161 A recent visit to the Goodwill turned up a practically brand new hard cover copy of Loving Frank, a Hardcover of Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan and a paperback of Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote. I bought Heaven to Betsy and Betsy in Spite of Herself. These are Betsy-Tacy books. I haven't heard of them before, but they were very intriguing. I love a little bit of the past. Has anyone else ever heard of these books? At the Dollar General I found a light mystery(my fave kind of fluff) called The Ruthless Realtor Murders by David A. Kaufelt and at Wal-Mart I couldn't resist The Book of Bright Ideas by Sandra Kring. My favorite recent splurge was a gift from my husband. The school library was having book sale and he purchased for me The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand and a number of vintage books. The following all had copyrights in the 1930's, 40's, and 50's. Silver Pitchers by Lousia M. Alcott, three Nancy Drew mysteries, The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, and The Fun Encyclopedia which is full of all kinds of need ideas. My husband was very sweet to think of me and I am very blessed!

2832291 I usually spend way to much money when I go to the bookstore...I love to shop! But this time I restrained and only bought 1. I picked up Julia's Chocolates for the November read. I am very excited to start reading it!

message 677: by Amanda (new)

2832291 Harriet - I read One Fifth Avenue towards the end of the summer this year. I enjoyed it but it was different than I expected. I thought it would be a chick read, with the love story intertwined into Bushnell's explorations of NY society. However, it was more real life than anticipated. It was not a New York fairytale. I think that is what make Bushnell's writing stand out though, she keeps her writing based in the real world and explores NY in all of its grittiness. Not to say that there was moments of happiness throughout the read.
All in all, the book was really well written and Bushnells characters were relatable and entertaining.

And last night I ordered The Poetry of Robert Frost The Collected Poems, Complete and Unabridged and Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat The Great Speeches from Amazon...because it's not like my birthday is right around the corner and I'll probably get a decently sized Amazon gift certificate.
