Finally finished Poe's Children today and loved it. I would definitely recommend it to any fans of horror. Now, I'm putting three books to the 50 pg. test:
The Forever War, which was recommended to me by a dear friend
Ceremony, which I've heard great things about.
The Book of Lost Things, which I've been dying to read for months--it finally came in at the library!

I always seem to be reading three books at once, but right now my main focus is on "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingslover. So far I really like it.
I finished "The Lightning Theif" last night. I'm gonna start "The Sea of Monsters" . I am also going to finish reading "Tempted" .
I guess I have to start reading The Learners A Novel, since an acquaintance was kind enough to buy it for me as a surprise. After that, who knows? So many good books, not enough time before school starts back up to finish them all.
I am currently reading 3 books. "Different Seasons" by Stephen King, "El Zahir" by Paulo Coelho & "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" by John Berendt. Has anyone read any of these books. =)~
Kelly wrote: "I am reading The Autobiography of Henry VIII With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers by Margaret George. For a history nerd like me, this is heaven in the form of a book."Kelly, that sounds like a book that I'd like too! You'll have to let us know if it's good.
Stephany - I had to read that book twice to even begin to understand what was going on. I still really enjoyed it....but the movie was just awful.
I just finished reading The Time Traveler's Wife. I don't really suggest it to anyone because it's VERY hard to follow and understand. It was a good book though, so it's obviously your choice. Now, I am getting ready to start Eclipse.
I am reading The Autobiography of Henry VIII With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers by Margaret George. For a history nerd like me, this is heaven in the form of a book.
Finished The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and now on to The Great Gatsby which is one of those books I'm surprised I never ended up reading!
Just finished The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks this morning. It was a quick read. I don't know why his work is so popular- sure there's a lot of wish-fulfillment for bored housewives, but otherwise, eh.And it's shallow, but his prose is so un-stylized. And his characters/work completely lack any self/meta-introspection.
Now going to start either Tigana or Across the Nightingale Floor. Or try and finally finish Zero The Biography of a Dangerous Idea or my ee cummings's poetry selection.
I'm currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera. It actually didn't do very well on my page 69 test but I've decided to give it a go anyway.
I'm starting The Name of the Wind right now, I hope it's as good as it sounds on the cover! Has anyone read it?
I finished The Tequila Worm the other night, and just started Bless Me, Ultima last night. Beautiful language in that one.
I just finished The Angel's Game, I loved it! I'm gonna watch Little Women before I decide what to read next, it was on TV a couple of days ago and I missed it, I'm so happy I have it on DVD :)
I finished City of Bones last night. The first half of it was slow for me, but I really enjoyed the reading the last part. For a young adult novel, it wasn't too bad.
Now, I'm moving on to Slaughterhouse Five.
I'm currently reading two books: Skipping Christmas by John Grisham, which is the book that was the basis for the movie Christmas with the Kranks, or whatever it was called. I like it so far--it's pretty funny, but right now it's dragging.
Poe's Children, which is an anthology of horror/sci fi short stories from the past decade compiled by Peter Straub. It's fascinating, although I'll admit, not all of the stories have been "my cup of tea." His goal in putting the anthology together was to prove that the horror genre is more than scary monsters, blood, gore, and cheesy covers, but rather is a legitimate literary genre. Thus far, he's done an excellent job at proving his point.
I literally just finished Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson. LOVED IT. Almost 600 pages of epic fantasy, which would normally seem a bit daunting to a slow reader like myself, but I only started it on Christmas Eve and got sucked in very quickly. To be honest, I'm a bit exhilarated by it and I'm not sure what I will read next. My options are as follows:The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Girl in the Green Sweater (it's about the holocaust)
Church of Lies (it's about the FLDS and a girl who escaped it)
Any of the first ten or so books of the Redwall series
Whatever I start, I must finish before I leave on Wednesday morning.
Wine is always good, Lori! And you can never go wrong with Holidays on Ice.I'm currently reading Sharpe's Rifles and really enjoying it. Its the first book of my SOLSTICE list that I'm doing with my boyfriend... because we're huge nerds.
Happy Holidays to all!
Well, it's Christmas Day and that means it's time for Holidays on Ice...especially apt because we're snowed in. But I don't have anything to make a martini with. I'll just have to settle for copious amounts of wine.
Just gave up on A Prayer for Owen Meany (good book, but so slow!) and am now reading The Lovely Bones because I'm currently visiting my grandparents in middle of nowhere Florida and it was the only good book I could find in Wal-Mart (seriously, I haven't seen a single bookstore around here...). But it's great so far!
Just finished Wuthering Heights and really enjoyed it :)
Now I'm on Death With Interruptions by Jose Saramago.
The synopsis is really intriguing:
"On the first day of the new year, no one dies. This of course causes consternation among politicians, religious leaders, morticians, and doctors. Among the general public, on the other hand, there is initially celebration -— flags are hung out on balconies, people dance in the streets. They have achieved the great goal of humanity: eternal life.
Then reality hits home —- families are left to care for the permanently dying, life-insurance policies become meaningless, and funeral parlors are reduced to arranging burials for pet dogs, cats, hamsters, and parrots.
Death sits in her chilly apartment, where she lives alone with scythe and filing cabinets, and contemplates her experiment: What if no one ever died again? What if she, death with a small d,became human and were to fall in love?"
He has some oddities with punctuation that might bug me though, so we'll see.

Get ready for this... I asked for Peter and the Sword of Mercy for Christmas. LOL I have read the first three. They're awesome. I can't wait.
I love Peter and the Starcatchers! Did you read the latest book? I bought to first one for my cousin last year.
Kimberly wrote: "Can anyone suggest a good book that is appropriate for a ten year old? I guess Twilight is all the craze for that age group, and my little cousin, Baylie really wants to read vampire books. However..."
My favorites series around that time were the Dear America Diaries and the Royal Diaries. I loved animorphs around that time too!

If you're not worried about books that have a bit more violence, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' books are good too.
Can anyone suggest a good book that is appropriate for a ten year old? I guess Twilight is all the craze for that age group, and my little cousin, Baylie really wants to read vampire books. However, Twilight is too old for her. She's also really into the Animorph books. (Which totally cracks me up because those were popular when I was her age).
I just started reading Uglies. It's one of the books my Secret Santa gave me. :) I'm loving it so far, really interesting!
I just began Handle with Care byJodi Picoult. I've been trying to sludge through all 17 of her novels, but with the same basic story structures, I have to take long breaks in between each read.
Lynn wrote: "Just finished Columbine by Dave Cullen. so so so so so so so so so SOOOOOO good!!"I've had that on my tbr list for a while. Maybe I'll have to pick it up!
Just finished Me Talk Pretty One Day and really liked it! I'm glad that I finally picked it up. I am now on to The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane which a friend gave me to borrow since I made her read The Bell Jar.
I just finished A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings and I'm currently reading The Double Bind
Matthew, I was also quite impressed with Gone With the Wind. Honestly I couldn't stand Scarlett, but everything else made up for her.
Just finished Love in the Time of Cholera and LOVED it. What a fantastic book! Now I'm on to Me Talk Pretty One Day
I finished reading Breakfast at Tiffany's last night. It was beautifully written. I'm still having a hard time seeing anyone other than Audrey Hepburn as Holly. And now onto The Cheese Monkeys, a special gift I received.
I'm reading Carrie, which a friend lent me. Then I'll fiiiiiinally finish One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
I'm reading Jostein Gaarder's The Christmas Mystery now, and since it's sort of like a literary Advent calendar I'm now reading a chapter a day (since I caught up to the current date). It's pretty interesting so far, I like it. I'm also reading Wally Lamb's Wishin' and Hopin'.
I finally finished The Unbearable lightness of being, which I enjoyed it a lot. I'm starting The Child in Time by Ian McEwan, now.
Alicia how was On Chesil Beach? I really like McEwan's books, so I'm curious, is it as good as his other novels?
I requested a bunch of ya books from my library and they all just came in so I'll be reading them soon. I don't read a lot of ya but I thought it would be nice after my finals lol! and I've been wanting to read these for a while! -The Uglies Series
-The Hunger Games
-The Maze Runner
