2365546 Finished The Handmaid's Tale and starting Franny & Zooey, and old group read

2302019 I just picked up Much Ado About Nothing from the library. I'm pretty excited about it. I saw a movie that they made of it, and it's probably my favorite movie ever. And they stuck really close to the play, so I'm pretty pumped.
I've also reserved The Remains of the Day, which I'm also really excited about, considering how much I loved Never Let Me Go. I'm also hoping to find All Creatures Great and Small sometime soon, if I can manage to find my way through the library without getting lost.

message 1403: by Kimberly (new)

1330074 Emily I love Much Ado. It's probably one of my very favorite Shakespeare plays. I loved the movie. What a cast! Although Keanu Reeves can't say an iambic pentameter to save his life.

message 1404: by Tahleen (new)

1868279 Emily and Kimberly, ME TOO!! I own the movie, and I was lucky enough to see an amazing performance of it in London at the National Theater. I would say it's probably my favorite Shakespeare comedy, if not my favorite Shakespeare play altogether.

1769862 I just finished Anna Karenina! I started it about a year ago and now I'm done! I feel like doing a really raunchy victory dance in my living room to celebrate. Maybe light some sparklers. Next is to finish The Grapes of Wrath. I only have about 175 pages left of it.

message 1406: by Michelle (new)

952810 I'm trying to get through Ventrue Clan Novel, which even though it's short and fairly good it's taking a long time for some reason.

Also kind of reading my roommates book off and on called Elantris.

message 1407: by Kimberly (new)

1330074 Michelle you'll have to let us know what you think of Elantris. I've almost bought it at the bookstore a couple times now.

Well so far I'm about 300(ish) pages into it and I love it, I really want to buy it myself so I can reread it in the future. I completely recommend it, it's very original and the storyline completely sucked me.

2900593 I didn't JUST finish reading this book, but it was in the last few books I finished reading-- it's A Confederacy of Dunces! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good laugh. I have never laughed so much from a book. It's more than just comedy though; it wasn't until the end that I got the title. In a way it is sad to know the irrationality of the main character.

But I don't want to get too into it :)! Bottom line, loved this book so much!

message 1410: by Jamie, the forever 21 slave (new)

1518370 I've heard that book is hilarious! I keep seeing it every time I go into Borders. I'm thinking I should just cave and buy it! lol

message 1411: by Lyka (new)

2900593 Do it, I think by the 5th page I started laughing! It's the dialogue.

message 1412: by Heather (new)

1516048 I'm currently reading Wuthering Heights since I never got around to it while I was in school. I'm about 1/3 of the way through and enjoying it so far. I don't know why I waited so long to read so many of these great classics.
I'm also reading the House of Night Series.. just about to start the 4th book Untamed. Has anyone else read these? I'm interested in the storyline, but the narrator annoys the crap out of me! The writing reminds me of things my friends and I used to write back in 7th grade. Part of me really wants to stop reading but I also am interested to see what happens.

message 1413: by Tahleen (new)

1868279 Heather, I know what you mean. I like the storyline too, but Zoey can be SO PREACHY it makes me sick.

952810 I finally finished Ventrue Clan Novel and started Water for Elephants.
It's a group read for one of my other groups here on Goodreads. So far I'm really liking it.

2302019 I just finished Much Ado About Nothing. It's so funny! I swear that man is a genius.

In other news, I requested and am waiting for The Remains of the Day and Maus from the library. I still can't find All Creatures Great and Small because apparently that section of the library only exists in the catalog's imagination.

message 1416: by Jen (last edited 23 days ago, 06:18PM) (new)

2380713 I recently finished reading The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America, it was interesting...but just okay. Now I'm reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close which I love so far.

Then if it's in from the library I'll be reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

message 1417: by Jamie, the forever 21 slave (new)

1518370 Jen..you are reading one of my favorite books in the world! :) I hope you continue to love it. Make sure you check out the thread for it in the Past Discussion folder because I'd definitely love to talk about it again! :)

message 1418: by Kimberly (new)

1330074 I think I really need to read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I've heard nothing but good things about it from this group. I might need to add it to my list of books to pick up next time I'm at the bookstore...

message 1419: by Jamie, the forever 21 slave (new)

1518370 Kimberly..I'd be willing to let you borrow it if you want!

1769862 I just finished The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck. It was really good. Coming from Oklahoma, I see evidence of the Depression and New Deal all of the time (a couple of buildings on my college campus were built with New Deal money and sidewalks all over the place have the WPA emblem). And I hear stories from my papa about the Depression frequently. This book really combined all of those things to make a very complete, very real portrait of what the Depression was like for the Okies who traveled to California. Personally, I feel that this book helped explain why Oklahoma is the way it is today. Anyway...really good book; I'd recommend it.

message 1423: by Jamie, the forever 21 slave (new)

1518370 Just finished March and now going to read The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

message 1424: by Ashley (new)

257698 Just finished "Shadow Kiss" last night(finally). I am now going to read "Blood Promise" . I am also gonna reading "The Christmas Shoes" for a light read.

Christmas Shoes light reading? I can't hardly listen to the song without getting teary eyed.

message 1426: by Nicole (new)

2830527 I just finished "The Bell Jar" and I loved it! It was hard to get into at first, but once I identified with Esther, I couldn't put the book down! She was so similar to me (her life, her feminist thoughts, and her depression...to a lesser extent though)

message 1427: by Jamie, the forever 21 slave (new)

1518370 Nicole..that is one of my FAVORITE books of all time!

message 1428: by Annashu (new)

1931729 I love The Bell Jar as well. I've re-read it 3-4 times and each time I recognize and identify with a different aspect of Esther. So glad that you enjoyed it!

message 1429: by Jen (new)

2380713 I finished Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close this morning. I really liked it!
Now I'm reading Twilight. I'm already almost 200 pages into it, I did not think I was going to like it at all...but I can't put it down.

message 1430: by Annie (new)

2025942 I think Im going to finally give into Twilight (even after I bashed it)
My boyfriend's grandmother just gave me a Nicholas Sparks book to read, The Choice. As lame as I found it, I couldnt put it down! It was so good! But I still think his love stories are lame haha

message 1431: by Emily (last edited 15 days ago, 09:39AM) (new)

2302019 I'm currently reading Catching Fire and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I'm taking a break from my other books to do so. Light reading is good, and both work for my challenge.

message 1432: by Michelle (new)

952810 I just started The Eye of the World very large book so I may pick another book to read along side it.

message 1433: by Tahleen (new)

1868279 I'm in the middle of Speak, which I'm finding hard to put down. If you haven't read it yet you should.

message 1434: by Heather (new)

1516048 Tahleen, I haven't read Speak, but I actually just watched the movie last week. I normally get really annoyed by Kristen Stewart, but I thought it was a pretty good movie... kinda wish I'd read the book first though.

message 1435: by Drew (new)

2391930 I'm reading The Road just finished The Kingdom of Matthias.

message 1436: by Jayme (new)

2820967 i'm reading Emily Giffin's "Something Blue" and I just finished her "Something Borrowed." a bit of chick lit.

message 1437: by Lori, The Over-Caffeinated Coffee Girl (new)

1769862 I'm reading Swann's Way right now and I'm absolutely loving it! Something about this time of year makes me fall in love with language, and Swann's Way is a tremendous experiment in language. I wish I had the time to read it in its original French, maybe this summer.

How was Something Borrowed..I won it through the Goodreads giveaway thing!

Franny and Zooey is really good, though some of the topics was unexpected. Happy reading. How is Handmaid's Tale I have a friend whose read it but never picked it up myself.

message 1440: by Jardley (new)

1087162 And I just finished reading Unaccustomed Earth and now on to Love & Lies.

message 1441: by Jamie, the forever 21 slave (new)

It was actually really good, one of my favorite chick lit books yet. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did, because the beginning isn't all that great, but it grew on me.

I want to see the movie now. I'm sure it's not as good as the book but I think it will be interesting to see it on screen.

message 1444: by Denise (new)

2682954 It's been a long time since I've read Speak or seen the movie, but I remember thinking the movie was pretty well done, considering the fact that so much of the book is thoughts and observations rather than dialog (at least for the main character).

2820967 Heather wrote: "I'm currently reading Wuthering Heights since I never got around to it while I was in school. I'm about 1/3 of the way through and enjoying it so far. I don't know why I waited so long ..."

So true. I read the first and second novel, and I have the fourth one in my stack somewhere, but I just really didn't enjoy the style of the books at all. I do however like the fact it makes place in Tulsa, since I grew up only 40 miles from there. I liked reading about places I see everyday when I drive to work.

message 1446: by Melissa (new)

2286777 I just finished reaing Dreamfever and Hamlet. I am now reading The Handmaid's Tale, Anna Karenina and The Taming of the Shrew.

message 1447: by Tahleen (new)

1868279 Just started The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I'm kind of bored with it already.

message 1448: by Emily (new)

2302019 I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Catching Fire. Both were ok, but not great. Potato was funny and Fire was exciting, but both were pretty contrived and neither were written very well. Still, they were entertaining for a quick pleasure read.

I'm currently reading The Crying of Lot 49, which is just plain strange, and I'm hoping to get The Remains of the Day from the library soon.
I'm also going to be ordering some paperbackswap books soon so I'll be sure to have books over winter break. I'm hoping to get a bunch of my challenge books done over Christmas.

message 1449: by Justine (new)

The handmaid's Tale was good, my first Margaret Atwood and I want to read her other novels now. The idea itself was hard to read about but I think it was definitely worth it!

I started
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time but it is taking me FOREVER to read. I want to like it, because I like the idea, I just can't get into it at all.

I also picked up Unaccustomed Earth at the library this morning! I might have to start this one instead.
