1472968 I ventured towards a few bookshelves of used books and saw one I remember someone here wanting. It was only 50 cents so I grabbed it, and it looks like a few of you have it on your to read list.

Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong

So after I read it, I will gladly pass it along, if you all want to send me your addresses we can do it like a chain letter. Just let me know.

1011802 I just went to the used book store; my favorite one closed, this one is not as good :(. Anyway, I bought Running with Scissors A Memoir

message 610: by Jen (new)

2380713 Barnes and Noble run yesterday. I ended up getting:

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll (I can't believe I've never read the book before).
My Horizontal Life A Collection of One-Night Stands by Chelsea Handler
Cocktails for Three by Madeleine Wickham

I was thinking about picking up Twilight but I didn't. Now I'm thinking I should have.

I guess I was in an easy read mood! Need something light before classes start up.

1577174 Yesterday I bought The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, which is actually really good for me (in the way that it is not five books). Last week(ish) I bought Waiter Rant Thanks for the Tip-Confessions of a Cynical Waiter, Fables Volume 1 Legends in Exile, Hocus Pocus, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And maybe one more that I'm forgetting.

Running With Scissors is VERY good. I haven't seen the movie, but I heard it wasn't very good anyway! LOL! But the book is great! Let me know what you think of it! :)

1843983 Damn, damn, DAMN psychology books! I absolutely love psychology, if I see a psychology book I HAVE to get it. I got The Psychology of Science and the Origins of the Scientific Mind and Social Identifications A Social Psychology of Intergroup Relations and Group Processes. I can't keep doing this!

message 614: by Tami (new)

1472968 Better than my last purchase. Stupid text books I won't ever read, well, willingly read. :)

message 615: by Daniel (new)

957634 Murakami's Norweigen Wood. It's a good book, but also a little bit painful to read.

message 616: by Melissa (new)

message 624: by Jamie, singer of the job searching blues (new)

message 625: by Jen (new)

2380713 I bought Something Blue the other day at the bookstore and a really cute owl bookmark!

message 626: by Ashley (new)

257698 Yesterday I got "Tempted" the final book of the House of Night series, and I got Shadowland the third book of the Immortals series by Alyson Noel.

message 627: by Jamie, singer of the job searching blues (new)

1518370 How are those books? I keep thinking that my sister will really like them.

message 628: by Ashley (new)

257698 Well I haven't started "Tempted" yet and I haven't even started the first book of the Immortal series. I will have to get back to you on that.

message 629: by Matthew (new)

2954093 ok, thuis afternoon I picked up an anotated copy of Lolita. Online picking up First Lord's Fury. And tomorrow I'll be picking up Dragon Rule (but only because I'm published in it.)

message 630: by Lori, The Over-Caffeinated Coffee Girl (new)

1769862 Recently I've bought...The Essential Rumi, Layla and Majnun, Nine Stories, the complete works of Robert Frost, a collection of Churchill's speeches, The Second World War: A Complete History, and a biography on MacArthur. I had a couple of gift certificates to Amazon.

Matthew, I really want to read Lolita, but I keep hitting roadblocks. Any advice on how to get through it?

message 631: by Matthew (new)

2954093 That would depend Lori. Where is your trouble? Is it the language, the morality, the psychology or something else entirely?

message 632: by Lori, The Over-Caffeinated Coffee Girl (new)

1769862 I think it's the style. It's so clinical and removed. (I understand why it's written like that, but I don't know how to get past that)

message 633: by Matthew (new)

2954093 Lori, if that's your problem my advice would require two things; a good imagination and suspended disbelief. I would suggest you try reading it imagining yourself to be a psychiatrist, reading the self-justification of Humbert Humbert.

message 634: by Jamie, singer of the job searching blues (new)

1518370 Matthew--I think that is a great suggestion. That was kinda my approach because I started out having a hard time with it too.

message 635: by Lori, The Over-Caffeinated Coffee Girl (new)

1769862 Thanks Matthew. I'll definitely have to try that.

message 636: by Matthew (new)

2954093 Another suggestion is to pick up the annotated copy of Lolita (The Annotated Lolita Revised and Updated). (I suggest this for everyone who has read the book) You would be amazed at how many literary references Nabokov dropped in.

message 637: by Lori, The Over-Caffeinated Coffee Girl (new)

1769862 I'll have to look into doing that. (It will be difficult because I really like the cover for my other copy of Lolita...) Thank you Matthew!

message 638: by Roisu (new)

1843983 I just bought 3 books for 90c in a charity store! I got Lucky by Alice Sebold, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, and Three Junes by Julia Glass. I can't wait to read them!

message 639: by Annashu (new)

1931729 I swore I wasn't going to buy more books for myself until after christmas, but then I had to buy my secret santa book and other books just accidentally got added to my cart...
Here is what I ended up with
The Professor and the Madman A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary
THE OXFORD DICTIONARY OF WORD HISTORIES.
Seven Gothic Tales
The Book Thief
The Complete Persepolis
The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear
and my secret santa book

message 640: by Shanna (new)

2260067 I just bought Snow Flower and the Secret Fan for $1. There just happened to be a random used book sale, and of course I couldn't walk by it without buying anything!

message 641: by Jamie, singer of the job searching blues (new)

1518370 I am so jealous! Nice purchases ladies!

message 642: by Drew (new)

2391930 I ordered Seeing Redd about 5 minutes after finishing The Looking Glass Wars yesterday morning. Such a compelling, if awkwardly written, story line.

message 643: by Tahleen (new)

1868279 So I broke down yesterday and bought a book even though I'm on my ban... I bought Dog on It A Chet and Bernie Mystery yesterday at B&N because it was a BARGAIN book--I ended up paying about $3.50 for it with my discount and I've been dying to read it! So anyone know what I should do for punishment? Maybe I should add 1 or 2 books to my goal now.

message 644: by Matthew (new)

2954093 As punishment you should do a book report (3rd grade style) on your new book for the class (us).

message 645: by Tahleen (new)

1868279 Ha! So should I just do a regular review, or do you want it in 3rd-grade English?

message 646: by Lori, The Over-Caffeinated Coffee Girl (new)

1769862 I'd say it needs to be written from the prospective of a 3rd grader. It will be an exercise in creativity and more entertainment for the rest of us.

message 647: by Tahleen (new)

1868279 That's what I thought. :) I'll do that when I read it.

message 648: by Jamie, singer of the job searching blues (new)

1518370 I like it! :)

message 649: by Denise (new)

2682954 I bought Dear John bargain priced at B&N. I've been meaning to read something by Nicholas Sparks for years & now I'm finally going to.

message 650: by Ashley (new)

257698 Today I got "So Hard To Say" by Alex Sanchez and "Burned" by Ellen Hopkins.
