1435453 CATEGORY suggestions for Book of the Month choices.

Ex: Young Adult, mystery, etc. We can vote on the category suggestions each month.

Please add your category suggestions here!

1435453 Here are my Category suggestions:

--Not, not, not a bestseller, but a book I love.

--Book with a Q, V, X, Y, or Z in the title.

--Book in which there is a good chance the word "portmanteau" is used.

--A book where someone on the cover is missing an item of clothing.

1453659 Viv, Hmmm...does No. 4 mean romance novels? :-) Although...The Gargoyle has a cover of someone missing an item of clothing. :-)

1435453 Any book you can find that fits the category!

1549322 I'm ALL about Vivian's categories! I LOVE weird category names. How about:

- books whose authors have a first name derivative as a last name (Fern Michaels, etc)

- books which made it only to #25 on a bestseller list, but no higher

- books which have an epilogue but no prologue

- books that have quotation marks or a question mark in the title

-books whose titles contain a metaphor, hyperbole, or symbolism

1435453 Thanks Jessm! And thanks for thinking up more inventive categories for us!

For those members who would like to see for standard categories as well, don't worry, those are important too : )

message 8: by Vivian "Rain" (new)

1435453 Those are great Jenn, thank you!

1551940 Vivian,

Category suggestion for Book of the Month Choices:

*Award Winners (for example National Book Award, National Book Critics Circle Award, Newbery Medal, Nobel Prize for Literature, PEN/Faulkner Award, Pulitzer Prize, Agatha, Edgar, etc)

message 10: by Vivian "Rain" (new)

1435453 Thanks Tracy, good suggestion!

message 11: by Lady Jayne (new)

1453659 This is actually an observation - I just noticed that in our Bookshelves that we have three books with the word "Game" in the title. Maybe we could have a "Game" Month at some point. :-)

message 12: by Viola (new)

1147290 Vivian,

Sounds like we a have many categories already, but I also look at the list of Original Voices Nominees that Border's puts out at the end of the year. I've found several great new authors there. It's how I found Twilight back in the day when it was first released and nobody had heard of it.

message 13: by Vivian "Rain" (new)

1435453 Great ideas Viola and Jayne : )

message 14: by Lady Jayne (new)

1453659 Maybe we could do themed months?
For example:
1. Sci-Fi/Fantasy Month;
2. Book set in a Historical Period Month;
3. A Meaningful Story Month;
4. Love Story Month;
5. Vampire Month;
6. As suggested previously, Books with "Game" in the title month. :-)
etc.

message 15: by Sans (new)

1451884 I'm perfectly happy to have several vampire months. ^_^

message 16: by Lady Jayne (last edited Sep 26, 2008 08:47AM) (new)

1453659 Well, Sandy...the Love Story Month, could be Vampire Love Stories, and the Fantasy month, could also be Vampire Fantasies! LOL ;-)

message 17: by Sans (new)

1451884 I think that'll be ideal, Jayne! ^_~

message 18: by Vivian "Rain" (new)

1435453 Sans, don't tell me you are giving up team werewolves for team vampire?!!! ; )

message 19: by Sans (new)

1451884 Oh, Viv. I'm far too greedy to give anything up so I'm gonna stay on both teams. You should know that by now!

message 20: by Vivian "Rain" (new)

1435453 Hmmm, that sounds like an awfully good plan, Sans....

message 21: by Gena (new)

1452969 There's a new book out that was edited by P.C. Cast, (the woman who wrote the House of Night series), about Vamp romance. 'Cept this collection of vampire romances isn't the typical sweet, swoony stuff. They're more about the unexpected, the difficult, things, (and characters), not being what they seem and of course about more than anything--about love.

I picked it up a couple days ago. Looks great!

message 22: by Vivian "Rain" (new)

1435453 Ohhh, me like Gena ; )

message 23: by Lady Jayne (new)

1453659 We could have a "Cultural Awareness" Month...where "culture" is an important part of the "voice" of the story.

message 24: by Claudia (new)

1494137 Gena, wow. That sounds interesting. Do you happen to have more details for me?

message 25: by Jess (new)

1549322 LOVE the idea of "Cultural Awareness" month. I know I, personally, don't really read books outside what people would expect (if that makes sense). My reading doesn't have a lot of Cultural Awareness, I guess. I'd love to hear suggestions from all of you to broaden my awareness. I love to travel, but that love doesn't really translate into the books I read.

message 26: by Jess (new)

1549322 Ooh, I know I just posted, but this one just came to me:

How about a "light reads" month in December? Pick up something that doesn't require much time and challenge, but can evoke some good discussion. Possibly something YA, like one of "The Chronicles of Narnia." If you lot are like me, December is the month when I have NO free time - I'd be disinclined to even pick up a "thinking book" in December because I know I wouldn't be able to devote the time and attention it needed, with the holidays coming and all. I feel like I'd be able to try something short and sweet, though.

message 27: by Ahenry (new)

1546959 I am all for the Newbery idea... and it isn't just because I happen to be reading four of them at the same time right now. Sigh.

message 28: by Gena (new)

1452969 I do Claudia! The book is called,"Immortal, Love Stories With Bite" and it's an exclusive to Borders. Here's what the back of the book has to say:

Rachel Caine revisits the setting of her Morganville Vampires series, where the vampires are in charge and love is a risky endeavor, even when it comes to your own family!

Cynthia Leitich Smith gives us a love triangle between a vampire, a ghost and a human girl, in which none of them are who or what they seem.

Claudia Gray takes us into the world of her Evernight series, in which a pre-cvivil war courtesan-to-be is courted by a pale, fair-haired man who's attentions are too dangerous to spurn--in more ways than one.

Rachelle Mead brings us the tale of a young vampire on the run from the rest of her kind, and the human boy who provides the getaway car--and a reason to keep running.

Nancy Holder immerses us in a post-apocalyptic New York where two best friends are forced to make a choice that may kill them both.

Kristin Cast introduces us to a new kind of vampire; one with roots in Greek mythology, and the power to alter space and time to save the girl he's meant to love.

And master fantasist Tanith Lee shows us what happens when a bright young woman with some supernatural savvy encounters a misguided (but gorgeous) young vampire.

Anyway Claudia--does that sound like something you might be interested in? Or anyone else, for that matter?

1494137 Gena, thanks! That´s very interesting. Sounds like a book I would enjoy...Buuuut it´s a real pity that I can´t get a hand on it here, as I can´t order it at amazon... :( Really a shame!

message 30: by Vivian "Rain" (new)

1435453 Hi Jessm, I think you are right about December, something that won't take too long to read!

message 31: by Lady Jayne (last edited Sep 27, 2008 11:04PM) (new)

1453659 Good suggestion Jessm. I agree about an easy read for December. :-) Something happy to get us in the mood for the season. The Luxe is an easy read. Maybe we could read that. I bought a copy few weeks ago and it is waiting to be read. :-)

message 32: by Gena (new)

1452969 Claudia, if you're interested in the book--I'd be happy to send you a copy?

message 33: by Claudia (new)

1494137 Gena, THANKS you´re sweet :) I would really appreciate it!
Shall we exchange payment information and address per PM?
Can I send you anything in return? Is there anything "German" you are interested in?

message 34: by Jess (new)

1549322 Gena, the book sounds awesome! I'll have to pick up a copy on my next Borders run...because I go to Borders the same way other people go to the grocery store!

message 35: by Gena (new)

1452969 Did you pick up a copy, Jess? :-D

message 36: by Lady Jayne (last edited Sep 30, 2008 12:56AM) (new)

1453659 I tried to get a copy at my Borders here but it must be a U.S. exclusive.

message 37: by Sans (new)

1451884 I got you covered, Jayne. PM me your details & I'll get a copy out to you forthwith.

message 38: by Jess (new)

1549322 Not yet, Gena. Ang and I are going to Borders to pick up bookmarks on Friday. She's usually the one to talk ME into buying more than I wanted...looks like it's time to turn the tables on her! I bet I can get her to buy a copy, too! :-)

message 39: by Lady Jayne (new)

1453659 Aaaww Sandy...you're so sweet. I'll PM you and we'll work something out. :-)

message 40: by Gena (new)

1452969 Oh Jayne, I'm apologize for not offering to send you one! Of course it didn't dawn on me that Borders in OZ might not have it! (And thank you Sans for covering for rude girl here...)

Anyone else out there interested in this book that can't get it? Come on, don't be shy--not like we don't like sharing a little vamp love around here! ;-D

message 41: by Lady Jayne (new)

1453659 Aw, that's ok, Gena. Sandy beat you to it! You gals are so good at spreading the vamp love. Dr Carlisle Cullen would be so proud. :-)

message 42: by Sarah (new)

1470938 I can't find that Immortal collection on borders.com...can someone link it?

message 43: by Sans (new)

1451884 I think it's available at physical stores only. I tried searching the website too but didn't find it. There are several copies at my local shop though.

message 44: by Sarah (new)

1470938 Ok cool. What section? The two border's around me are in towns I do not frequent...so I don't know that I'll pick this one up, but we'll see what life brings me.

message 45: by Sans (new)

1451884 It's in Young Adult Fiction, same section House of Night and Twilight are in. Have fun!

message 46: by Sarah (new)

1470938 Ok cool! Thanks!

message 47: by Jess (new)

1549322 Okay, Gena, so I bought "Immortal: Love Stories With A Bite" on Friday. I've had little to no time to myself this weekend, but I've already finished two of the stories. LOVED the first one, but the second convinced me NOT to buy the "House of Night" series. Can't wait to "bite into" the other stories - thanks for the suggestion!

message 48: by Sans (new)

1451884 Would anyone else be interested in a category for short story anthologies?

message 49: by Sarah (new)

1470938 Yea, I like short stories. I had to read nine one summer for high school and write essays on each one, and the essays were longer than the stories!!! lol

580431 Sans, we had a short story category under the Dec poll, but only one person voted for it!
