I recommend The Children of Hurin.. it is just brilliant!

I've been delaying reading parts of the History series, because that way it isn't completely 'over' as a story, especially with a couple of the later volumes. But I think I'm ready to give it a go.

My friend gave me her copy of The Silmarillion and I (finally) started to read it. I'm not very far into it, but I am enjoying it from what I have read.

A reading challenge seems like an excellent endeavor. I think I might try it soon. I just bought The Children of Hurin and plan on borrowing The Silmarillion from a friend, so I will be ready to pursue Tolkien beyond The Hobbit and LOTR. :)

Sylvia's enthusiasm is indeed infectious. I haven't read any Tolkien books this year :(, so I'd like to join in December with The Silmarillion (attempted this a couple of times and didn't finish) and perhaps The Children of Húrin.

woohoo! I'm joining. I've already read 9 of the works you listed on your blog and am well into the 10th (Children of Hurin). I was wondering something though. Why not include all of his works? For me personally I'm adding on: The Road Goes Ever On, The Father Christmas Letters, Finn and Hengest, Mr Bliss, The Monsters and the Critics, and The Lays of Beleriand. He has also written Smith of Wooten Major, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo, Roverandom, and The Book of Lost Tales part one and two (I've already read those).

A brightly-woven plan, indeed! I must confess that your enthusiasm inspires me to join in your quest. I have spent too long in my adult life accumulating a treasured Tolkien library without taking the time to read and enjoy the books themselves (as I did tirelessly when I was your age). So it is high-time that I delved deep into Middle-Earth once more, and to be part of a community of fellow Tolkien lovers will be a rare treat. Thank you for the invitation.

Challenge accepted - to a point - Hobbit, yes. Triolgy & the Unfinished Tales, maybe. some of the old tales ie Farmer Giles, yes . I have never read the Silmarillion, Children of Hurin so I will consider them as likely.

For all of you who love Tolkien, but haven't gotten around to reading some of his posthumous works, you may be interested in participating. I've always wanted to get into the History of Middle-earth series, but put it off because I wanted to re-read The Trilogy and The Silmarillion again beforehand. Well, this time, I'm going the full nine yards with a list of 22 books including The Hobbit, The Trilogy, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Children of Hurin, the entire History of Middle-earth series, and others. You don't have to read all 22 with me, but you can join in with whatever books you like.
The challenge begins on September 22--I hope to see you on the Tolkien Quest blog!
