Welcome to the group and congratulations on all your successes! My novel, Mr. Planemaker's Flying Machine, was serialised this year on Preston FM, which was brilliant! Forty-eight daily episodes went out with weekly Sunday omnibus editions. Maybe we will be able to listen to a Joni-Pip serialisation soon. Let us know if it happens.

Wow, Shelagh, that's marvellous! Many, many congratulations! Mr. Planemaker's Flying Machine sounds intriguing. I must buy it, can I get it in Waterstone's?

The most exciting thing that happened to me was I had a meeting with some guys from Top Trumps and they took thirty characters from Joni-Pip; so let's hope Joni-Pip will be made into that card game. They also talked about making a Joni-Pip computer game!


I have only had parts of Joni-Pip read on the radio so for you to hear it all....was it acted out or read....must have been amazing!

Have other had much luck at Book Fairs? I participated in the NOLA Book Fair (New Orleans) this past weekend and unfortunately the majority of us were placed at tables inside of bars or restaurants along Frenchmen Street. Those who were out on the streets (it appeared to possibly be many of the organizers) had probably 10 times the traffic of those of us inside. I only sold 3 books; the guy next to me zero books, and on the other side about 4 books. Any recommendations from others about GREAT book fair venues? Other than that the energy was GREAT! Thanks for any tips.

Paul, I am amazed that you are going to Book Fairs, at all. I never go, I leave all that to my Publishers. Authors are kind of superflous to the business at hand! Isn't it more a place for Publishers, or are things different in the United States?

If you are already doing that, which I suggest next, then so sorry!

I find my most successful venues are Book Shops, Libraries, Readers Groups, Writing Groups and Schools.

Ask your Publishers to set up everything for you. When you are the only Author at a Venue, there is no competition.

If I sell less than 30 books at any event I am disappointed.....which doesn't happen very often (almost never).

Schools are great, you give of your time to talk about yourself and your writing, the students ask loads of questions, which is fun and my Manager always arranges for me to return a day or two later for a Book Sale and Signing. He leaves it that way so that the student by this time (hopefully), knows you a little and wants to buy a signed copy of your work. At one school over fifty percent of the students bought a copy of Joni-Pip.

If that's not helpful, then I am sorry!

I wouldn't recommend book fairs either. At least not for book sales. Even with the prime spot at a fair geared to my client's type of book, a first class book, and a super large bright yellow banner, she did little to nothing at book fairs as far as book sales. Now, she did make some valuable contacts, but sales were next to nonexistent. Other clients have had much the same experience. Ninety nine times out of a hundred, the only people that make out on the deal are the people putting it on.

Authors Den represented me at the Los Angeles Book Fair. they did not sell one copy of What Mother Teresa Taught Me. Everywhere I have shown the book I have sold most if not all of the copies I had with me.
I don't trust Book Fairs as a place to sell books.

I feel encouraged to press even when things seem hard. Thanks for sharing your achievements. It does the heart good to know that it's possible.

I find Book Tours very tiring but so much fun, especially meeting so many new people!

I took part in a book event yesterday and sold 50 books, so I was pleased to think 50 families walked away with Joni-Pip.

Dia duibh, all (Irish for Hello all),

I've written four books of fiction - two short story collections and two novels. They sold OK but not enough to inspire the publishers to reprint (the fools, the fools). I've written another novel-and-a-half but I find as I get older (OK, I'm 67 - want to make something of it, mmmh?) I find it harder to give my writing the focused energy that half-decent writing needs. I also find I get bored quicker, so if anyone in PublishedAuthors has any ideas for solving boht those problems, I'm all ears...

Welcome to the group! One of the members of the Published Authors forum, Dick Stodghill (of Irish descent!), died recently at the age of eighty-four. He was quite an accomplished short story writer and many of his stories appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. Maybe that is the way to go for you.
