I liked this book and found it hard to put down, however, the last 1/3 of the book was a little confusing, hence the three stars instead of four. My true rating would be 3.5 stars. I enjoyed how the author switched back in forth in time between the chapters but I found myself enjoying the past stories more than the present. Also, for those not well-versed in the war that split yugoslavia, the timeline can be a bit confusing. Definitely worth reading and a great first effort by this author! I can't wait to see what she does with her next book
I finished this book about two days ago. I agree that the last 25-30% was somewhat confusing. But I thought the character development was excellent, and I highly enjoyed the sort of mix of fantasy and realism, what with the deathless man and the tiger's wife. I have to say, I found the information about the zoo animals reacting to the bombing extremely realistic, and was highly impressed with those details. I', not sure if this is Obreht's first books or not, but I do think she will mature into one of the greats of our time.OH, and I was going to give this three stars for the late confusion as well, until the absolute last page of the book. The ending was absolutely beautiful.
