Jackie | 2402 comments Mini-Challenge #2 - June 2011

How this challenge works:
Each book read must touch at least one category task from the list below. Each book can have multiple tasks counted, if eligible, but no duplicates.
============================
Scoring example:
Gone With the Wind
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Points -
Time Period: 1800s (+1 point)
Genre: Historical Fiction (+1 point)/ Romance (+1 point)
Locale: Georgia (+1 point)
Themes: War (+1 point)/ Politics (+1 point)
Book Cover: Color Yellow (+1 point)
Random: Published between 1900-1999 (+1 point)/ Family Saga (+1 point)
June Events: Slavery (+1 point)/ Father [Rhett] (+1 point)
Total task points: 11
Page Bonus 10
Total: 21
============================

RULES:
Participants may join at any time during the challenge. The challenge last from June 1st until June 30th. All points must be reported by 11:59pm EST on June 30, 2011 to be counted.

1) Books must be at least 200 pages long. Eligibility for this is determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads. If the most popular edition is 197 pages, it will not count, even if the edition read is 215 pages.

2) ALL books must be completed and points recorded by 11:59p EST on June 30, 2011 to count. Books started prior to June 1st will not be counted.

4) Re-reads and audiobooks are accepted. Audiobook page counts will be determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads.

SCORING:
***Please report all points in the Reporting Points Thread*** (This thread will be opened closer to the challenge start.)

5) To obtain points your book must touch at least one or more of the categories. Each item underneath the category is worth one point unless otherwise noted. Categories and items can be repeated as many times as you want throughout the course of the challenge, but cannot be duplicated for a single book. It is your responsibility to tell us what items came up in your book.

6) Bonus points will be awarded based on the length of each book read, as follows:
200 to 300 pages = 2 bonus points
301 to 500 pages = 4 bonus points
501 to 750 pages = 6 bonus points
751 to 1,000 pages = 8 bonus points
1,000+ = 10 bonus points

Bonus points will be awarded PER BOOK READ.

7) Page length used to determine task bonus points is determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads -- NOT the edition you actually read.

8) Cover requirements will be determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads. (This is a change from the last mini-challenge to make it more consistent for reporting and verification purposes.)

9) HAVE FUN!!!

JenC. (jencornelius) | 482 comments If you look at the scoring example for Gone With The Wind above, it might help.

Diane Whitney | 188 comments Just no repeats, like "Romeo and Juliet" would be 1 point for Proper name, not 2....right???

Jayme(the ghost reader) (JaymeILtheghostreader) | 2883 comments I looked at the scoring example. I have 2 points on book covers, one for partial face and one for the color yellow which would get 2 points.

Exactly.

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Ellen wrote: "Please clarify...I thought you could only claim one point per category."

One point per task per book. So let's say I have a book cover with three women in dresses on the cover standing in front of a castle with a dog nearby... I would be able to score for:

Dog or cat - 1 point
Castle - 1 point
Dress or gown - 1 point (despite there being 3 women wearing dresses).

Does that help?

Beth NC (BethNC) What would you consider a book with a self-discovery theme? That seems very objective. I just read Water for Elephants and the main character definitely discovered things about himself in that book. But I am not sure that is what you meant by that.....

That would count. We're basically looking for characters who learn and grow during the course of the story. It's pretty subjective. If you feel it should count - just let us know why.

I am actually fine with no explanations up front. We can always ask for clarification if we arent sure and that would prevent any inadvertent spoilers! :D

Butterflycager- You got an additional point for the book cover task (yellow) in So Many Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate Reading

Jayme- The Hostile Hospital- I changed the time period from contemporary to 1900's. Your points remain the same.

Kiri- In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin- Your total should be 14 because the book isn't on the specific can't wait list for the task and "garden" doesn't count for plant. It has to be a specific name of a plant for it to count.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if I missed anything :)
