I think a lot of us have children. I thought this would be a fun thread to discuss great kids books.
Personally I have always loved Rainbow Goblins and I think my kids have too. The Illistrations are wonderful.
Last night, I read Dragon's Fat Cat to my son. This is a cute book. We laughed so hard at the same time learned a little about taking care of cats (at least my son did). Fun read for kids.
My three year old is particularly fond of The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle right now. We read it at least five times a day.
My four year old daughter is a huge Fancy Nancy fan. Recently it has been Fancy Nancy and the posh puppy.
My favorite book when I was a child was "The Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairly Stupid Tales" by: Jon Scieszka. It pokes fun at all of the classic fairy tales: "Cinderella", "The Gingerbread Man", and so on. If your kid likes silly story books this is definitely one to pick up for them. Also a plus, as with many children's books, the illustrations in it are great (it won the Caldecott Honor).
I am 28 and do not yet have children, but your posting brought back some good memories for me...Some of my favorite childhood and YA books were:
The Amelia Bedelia books
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Richard Scarry's books
The Berenstein Bears
The Boxcar Children series
Encyclopedia Brown mysteries
and oh, the drama of Sweet Valley High
Amelia Bedelia is pretty funny. I haven't read the Encyclopedia Brown books books forever. Wow the memories.
Some of my favorites are...
Flotsam by David Weisner
Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann
Owl Babies by Martin Waddell
My son loves the Magic Schoolbus Series.
I honestly could go on and on, I love children's books.
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales looks good, I will have to check it out for my son, he loves funny books.
I love anything by Michael Rosen, John Masefield's Midnight's Folk, the Secret Garden, What Katy Did/Next/At School, Little Women - the whole series.
Beth, I've just read a really hilarious kiddies' book: Pete the Sheep-Sheep. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68810...
I don't have children, but I still like children's books... well YA mostly I suppose?Emilee, you should introduce your children to Diana Wynne Jones. I was nine when I read Dogsbody and she writes books aimed probably at about 8 and upwards to YA so there's everything for everyone - they all have a lot of depth to them though and so you'll enjoy them too!
I LOVE Diana Wynne Jones. She has a real quirky sense of humour and imagination.
I also have enjoyed Kevin Crossley Holland's Arthur trilogy which is set in medieval England. It's sort of a retelling of the Arthur legend, but the book isn't about King Arthur as such.
That's more YA though sort of the lower end.
The of course the Harry Potters.
On the younger end of children's books I have some Michael Morpurgo all which seem very good. I've only read one as of yet but enjoyed it - about a cat.
Oh, I totally forgot - as a kid I LOVED Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann. They're so sad though. :(I was about 8-9 when I started those.
My children are older now, but they loved the Eric Carle books (Grouchy Ladybug). I teach first grade and my students this year particularly love David Shannon books (No David! and David Gets in Trouble)
