Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments Welcome to Sci Fi Aficionados. This group was Maggie's idea, and I thank her for going into it with me.

So please, introduce yourself and tell us something about you. You can start with your favorite sci fi writers and books. You're favorite televisions shows and movies.

Milo | 40 comments Hi guys! I'm Milo.

Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments I'm Jason. You might or might not have seen me around Goodreads. I love sci fi, but have not read as much of it as I would like to say I have. I want to read more. I want to dig in and travel to other planets.

My absolute favorite is Spin by Robert Charles Wilson. I'm also just getting my feet wet reading some Star Wars and I want to read some Star Trek as well.

Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments Hi Milo! Welcome to SFA!

Milo | 40 comments Mhmm. Thanks for the invite.

Aloha | 534 comments Well, I'm currently trying to write a review for this great information science book The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood, but I decided to goof off and digress. I've always loved the sciences, and I've always loved the arts. I guess that would translate to sci-fi. I like Dan Simmons, Isaac Asimov, Orson Scott Card, Frank Herbert, and discovering more favorites. Dune is my favorite SciFi book of all time. I'm currently enamored with science non-fiction, but I'm sure I'll make my way back to fiction again. My favorite TV shows are the X-Files and the Star Trek series. Favorite movies would be Star Wars (Sci-Fi or no? Hmmm), and anything with parallel universes in it.

Aloha | 534 comments Thanks for the invite, Jason. I think I've seen you around somewhere. You've been busy!

Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments Hi Aloha. I can just hear what you said when you got my invite...

"That Jason creating another friggin group!"

I think that we could probably add a real science folder here. A lot of sci fi fans are also really into science and its progression.

LOL

Aloha | 534 comments Boy, do I have a lot of science books and authors to add to the real science folder! I think I went through all the books I've heard of. I've been really passionate about it.

Aloha | 534 comments Jason, if you see how many groups I've joined lately, you'll see I've gone the *shrugs shoulder* "What's another one?" route.

Denae (whimsicalmeerkat) Hi there, I'm Denae. I read a pretty wide variety of books. I love what sci fi I've read,, but in some ways am a novice in the genre. I also love the idea of having a place to discuss science. As far as the two types of books go, my long-time favorite science fiction work is Dune and my favorite science book is Autism's False Prophets: Bad Science, Risky Medicine, and the Search for a Cure. I look forward to the discussions! (Hi again to those who've seen me around!)

Aloha | 534 comments Welcome, Denae!

Milo | 40 comments Welcome all! Aloha Aloha.

Brick Marlin | 31 comments Thanks for the invite!!

Aloha | 534 comments Welcome Brick, Milo and all. I'd lei ya!

Bunny (BunnyCates) Hello people of SFA! =D

Aloha | 534 comments Welcome Bunny and Nicki! I'm getting into Asimov Isaac and Arthur C. Clarke myself.

Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments Welcome, everybody!

Ala (Xetrov) Buh...

me Ala. me likey laser go pewpew

Paul Dear all - thanks for the invite - I read a whole lot of sf years ago, then lapsed, as one does, then picked it up again. I love great short stories, not so much novels. If I turn my head slightly to the right from this keyboard, i see bookshelves containing all of Gardner Dozois' years best series, except the first two. I've read about 25% of all of them...so I have a long way to go.

Aloha | 534 comments Welcome Ala and Paul! Peee-ewwww, Ala!

Ala (Xetrov) I joined, saw you were here, and was tempted to flee.

But then I remembered you hunt by movement and stood still.

Then I remembered that was a T-Rex and not you and forgot what I was doing...

Amanda Lyons (AmandaMLyons) | 27 comments Hi I'm Amanda and I'm in both FA and HA as well as this one :) I tend to like story centered sci-fi over the more scientific fiction but also enjoy science books for themselves go figure. I like Carl Sagan as far as scientific books and theories but I do like some of the more recent ideas, don't worry. This song kinda makes a good approximation to my ideas on science and the universe really :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84P...

I'm a big fan of Star Trek the Next Generation, X-files, War of the Worlds, Earth 2, Babylon 5, Coyboy Bebop, Nadesico, Quantum Leap, Brisco County Jr, Red Dwarf, Doctor Who, Mystery Science Theater 3000, and a ton of random science shows like Myth Busters, Cosmos, Austopsy (yeah i love forensic science), and most anything that catches my attention in that direction.

While I like sci-fi fiction I'm still discovering it in many ways since most of the sci-fi stories I've enjoyed have been in film and tv form. Some examples of books I liked are A Game of Universe by Eric S Nylund, Farenheit 451, anything H.G. Wells, Battle Angel Alita, anything Ray Bradbury, Ghost in the Shell, Excession by Ian m Banks, anything by Phillip K Dick and anything from Harlan Ellison

Ala (Xetrov) Welcome Amanda :)

And thanks for making me look bad for not doing a real intro...sheesh :P

Aloha | 534 comments Welcome, Amanda! Love the YouTube video. That's my idea of science and the universe, too.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 466 comments I am glad you guys made this. I been waiting for something like this for a while.

Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments Welcome to all new members! :)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 466 comments The one sad thing that I find about science fiction is that it is a dying genre, harder for people to get into. It is not as good as fantasy, so it has a smaller audience. For example, I am not trying to be mean, but I guarantee everyone here that we are not going to see some of the regular members of FA here at all.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 466 comments I love science fiction. I alway think it goes together with fantasy as its twin.

mark monday (happyendoftheworid) | 494 comments hello all! i'm a big fan of science fiction, both classics and modern stuff. favorite are probably books by jack vance, cordwainer smith, edgar pangborn, marion zimmer bradley, philip k dick, robert silverberg, dan simmons, peter hamilton, vernor vinge, iain banks.

glad to see such speedy membership!

Aloha | 534 comments Jason, how about the obvious, horror Sci-Fi folder?

message 32: by Jason, Laser Gunner (new)

Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments Nicki wrote: "Well, no, I wouldn't expect that we will see all of the regular FA members here. However, in time I expect SFA will have some regulars that FA doesn't see either. :) Despite having a large crossove..."

It's like that between HA and FA, too. Lots of similar members, lots more different members.

message 33: by Jason, Laser Gunner (new)

Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments Ooohhh, great idea, Aloha!

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 466 comments One thing that I do like about science fictions is that there are more standalone books than series, especially with the golden age.

Aloha | 534 comments Thanks, Jason!

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 466 comments Glad to see some new faces as well as the old ones here.

MrsJoseph Hi, I'm MrsJoseph. I don't read a ton of sci-fi, mostly the occasional space opera.

Aloha | 534 comments Hey, MrsJoseph!

Jonathan (Jonathan_Maberry) | 2 comments Hey, guys...just followed an invitation to join. Looks like a fun group.

I'm a NY Times bestselling author and Marvel Comics writer. I write thrillers for St Martins Griffin (Patient Zero, The Dragon Factory, The King of Plagues), young adult dystopian adventures (Rot & Ruin, Dust & Decay), movie tie-ins for Tor (The Wolfman), and horror (Ghost Road Blues, Dead Man's Song, and Bad Man Rising); nonfiction (The Cryptopedia, Wanted Undead or Alive, Zombie CSU); and comics (DoomWar, Captain America: Hail Hydra, Marvel Universe vs Punisher).

Ala (Xetrov) Welcome Jonathan :)

Jason (Darkfiction) | 418 comments Hey Jonathan. Welcome! It's an honor to have you as a member. :)

Scott | 199 comments Hi, I'm Scott and I will not get into an argument about whether Star Wars is SF or not. :D

I have always been interested in space and science fiction. It's probably Carl Sagan's fault. (Cool video, Amanda!) When I was younger I read a lot of Anne McCaffrey and Alan Dean Foster. Lately I have been reading Charles Stross, John Barnes, Jack McDevitt, and Robert Charles Wilson.

My favorite SF novel is probably Golden Witchbreed.

Ala (Xetrov) Welcome Scott :)

Jonathan (Jonathan_Maberry) | 2 comments Happy to be aboard, guys.

Becky (BeckyETB) Errr... Hello again all. I don't really read very much sci fi, but I enjoy it when there's a good story behind it, like with Dune. I love Douglas Adams. (Wait, does he count? He counts, right?) I have a bunch of sci fi on my nook to read, including the Foundations and Odyssey series and an assortment of Philip K. Dick and a couple by Le Guin.

Plus, I figure that one can never really have too many groups with "Aficionados" in the title, so here I am! :)

message 50: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 517 comments Hey Maggie here--I am partially to blame for this, having put the bug in JAson's ear, but I think it will be a load of fun!
SOme of my sci-fi faves are Dune of course, but also Asimov, Heinlein, Philip Dick, and more....there just is never enough reading time in the day!
