I used to do paintings of the full moon and black old trees all the time. Finally sold one for $74.00!! I was so thrilled. There are some great shots of the full moon at Flickr.

1344318 I like the moon and branches logo. Sets a nice tone.

message 62: by deleted member (new)

I also love the moon image. I uploaded one to my group that a friend made for me around Halloween.

573337 Btw--I really like the current Group Logo!:-)

message 60: by Lori (new)

263406 I vote for the moon.

message 59: by Werner (new)

903390 Yes, Becky, that does make sense! Last night, I got a comment from another member who also likes the moon image, and felt that shrinking it to logo size didn't hurt it all, as she'd feared it would.

Since nobody's indicated by now that they're opposed to making the "spooky moon" our permanent logo, I'd say it's elected, and will stay up, unless there's ever a groundswell of opinion for changing it someday. Kudos to Ikiwiki for finding it in the first place; and thanks to everyone who took part in the discussion and search process.

message 58: by Becky (new)

1376766 Thanks Werner... I had gone back to look at some of the other ones, but didn't make it that far.

I still like the moon, though. It's very pretty, and also doesn't seem as though it would exclude any genres like a picture of something more specific might, if that makes sense.

message 57: by Werner (new)

903390 That makes five for the moon so far!

Becky (and all those of you who might be new to this discussion), links to all of the suggested pictures are embedded in various postings above on this thread. The raven reflection link is in message 14. Sorry I didn't explain that in my post this morning; I wrote it in kind of a hurry!

message 56: by Rora (new)

977340 I'll put my vote in for the moon.

message 55: by Becky (new)

1376766 I would like to see the raven reflection one, but it's not necessary for it to be logo-sized... Maybe just a link?

message 54: by Werner (new)

903390 Just now, I did a preliminary tally of the "votes" so far on the logo. The haunted house has 5, but also two against. Three people favor the moon, two the book cover (one opposes it), and I'm counting Aaron as voting for (?) the one with the guy seeing himself reflected as a raven.

To help forge a consensus, I'll switch my vote to the moon. That means that logo and the haunted house are tied 4-4 --but nobody strongly opposes the moon logo, either. It's a beautiful image with a mysterious, haunting quality; and it should bring out the werewolves! :-) Before I change trial logos again, let me ask --does anybody definitely feel like we need to see more images logo-sized? And is anybody opposed to adopting the moon logo as a consensus choice? I don't have a strong feeling about it (I just want to ditch the question mark!). :-)

message 53: by Werner (new)

903390 It'll soon be about time to put up another trial logo, now that you've all had time to look at the moon. I've downloaded Aaron's raven picture and could post that next, or one of Erin's finds, which I've finally had a chance to look over --whichever you all would rather get a close look at next. It might be nice to have our permanent choice made by Halloween, so maybe we can shoot for that date.

Erin, in the interests of time, would you mind if we narrowed your seven possibilities down to the most popular one? They're all good, but personally I like the pumpkin/black cat ones better than the "Bonded" one. The fairy might be more appropriate for a fantasy-focused group; and the two buildings, like the haunted house, might lose a good bit of detail in the smaller size.

message 52: by Steven (new)

1283483 The more I think about it, the moon pic really conveys the mood of the type of books the group is discussing, so at the risk of seeming wishy washy I'd like to change my opinion for favorite to the moon pic.

message 51: by Steven (new)

1283483 Sorry to be so late jumping into the discussion, but I like the Haunted House too.

message 50: by Becky (new)

1376766 Thanks Werner... I took a peek, and that one is a nice logo, but I have to say that I like the moon better.

message 49: by Werner (last edited Oct 08, 2008 12:09PM) (new)

903390 Becky, to see what I've been referring to as the "book cover" logo (since it is the cover from a book), go back to message #5 on this thread, and click on the second link there (the Lone Pine Publishing one). That's also a good logo --and since I haven't heard from Lone Pine in response to my copyright question, I'd say, on the theory that "silence is consent," that they'd have no objection to our using it!

message 48: by Erin (new)

1525983 I really like the moon. I didn't think it would show up nearly so well.

message 47: by Becky (new)

1376766 I like the moon logo better than the house, but only because so much detail is lost on the house due to its being so small. I would like to see this book cover logo, since I joined after it was removed, I guess.

message 46: by Werner (new)

903390 Well, we'll go by whatever the majority wants --or I should probably say, the plurality; with this many choices, we probably won't get a majority, unless we have a run-off of the top two! It'll take awhile to post them all so everybody can see them logo-size; but we don't have to be in a hurry. :-)

message 45: by Jim (new)

695116 So far, I've liked the book cover the best with the moon second. Too much detail is lost on the house for my taste - I'd put it second if I could see it better - but it's not a big deal no matter which you want, Werner.

message 44: by Werner (new)

903390 I've just taken the haunted house trial logo down and uploaded a new one for you all to look at for a couple of days. I picked what I thought was the best of the full moon ones, since some people had wondered how well the moon would show up when it's reduced in size. (Sorry I didn't do this earlier; I've got a lot of irons in the fire!)

Personally, my vote would still be for the haunted house. It's true that when it's reduced in size, a lot of the wonderful detail is lost. But it does still bring a dark, brooding presence to the page that comes across as suitably creepy, IMO!

message 43: by Rora (new)

977340 No problem. The haunted house pic is great. :)

message 42: by Ikiwiki (new)

1519495 Oooh! I like the darkness of the haunted house picture... And yes, Rora, you most definitely ROCK!

message 41: by Werner (new)

903390 Rora, as Ikiwiki might say, you rock! :-) I went to "group settings" as you suggested, and found "delete picture" immediately. So that picture is gone (for the moment), and I'll try shortly to post the haunted house picture, so you all can have a couple of days to look at that one. The question of what logo to have is open for discussion again!

message 40: by Rora (new)

977340 Did you go to "group settings"?

message 39: by Werner (new)

903390 As far as I could tell (and Jim MacLachlan also checked it out), that option didn't seem to be presented. But, I've just sent an inquiry about this to Goodreads Technical Support, so it's not over yet --the logo discussion may get a new lease on life. :-) I'll keep you all posted!

message 38: by Rora (new)

977340 That's odd, you should be able to "delete photo" and then upload a new one.

message 37: by Werner (new)

903390 Allison, I haven't checked out your suggestion yet, because for some reason the link you supplied won't work on my computer. A problem with any of these suggestions, though, is that I'm not sure if the computer program will let me replace the logo that's up now. Sorry about that --if I'd had a clue that might be the case, I wouldn't have posted any logo on a trial basis! Again, I hope none of you all who shared other suggestions are too disappointed! I think the search for a logo has actually been fun, and I hope the rest of you have gotten some enjoyment from it, too. :-)

message 36: by Allison (new)

1564604 I've found a neat picture ya'll might like for this group. Check out my pic. I found it on www.DigitalBlasphemy.com. Let me know what you think.

message 35: by Werner (new)

903390 I tried to post this earlier, but ran into a "Page unavailable" notice; hopefully this time I'll have better luck! When I tried to put up a different trial logo earlier, I discovered that the Goodreads computer program doesn't automatically supply the option of downloading a new picture when you click on one that's already there --it only does that when you click on the question mark. So now that we have a logo up, it's apparently up to stay, unless someone more computer-savvy than I am can change it. Fortunately, it's a good one that fits our focus, and I think most of us like it. (Sorry if anyone is disappointed by this development!) I'll try to contact the book publisher later today and touch base about the copyright issue.

message 34: by Erin (new)

1525983 No, none of that work is mine. I copped out and just found some good stuff that always needs exposure.

message 33: by Jim (new)

695116 I think this book logo shows up & sums up the group very well. While I don't like the picture quite as well as 'Bonded', I think it represents the group better.

Thanks for checking with Ivy, Erin. If nothing else, you've exposed more people to her work, which is good. Do you have anything up there?

message 32: by Erin (new)

1525983 I just got a note back from Ivy, the creator of bonded. She is more then happy to allow us to use her work. Here is her website that she would like us to put up some where saying thats the maker of our logo if we use it.

http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/6625...

You should check it out even if we don't use bonded because the work is amazing. I'm sure if you really liked another work on there that she'd allow us to use it. Buy some work from her and it'll make her really happy she helped us out, lol!

message 31: by Ikiwiki (new)

1519495 Many thanks to Werner, Erin and Jim! You all rock!!!

message 30: by Werner (new)

903390 For now, the book cover logo is up, "life size," for you all to look at; if the transfers all go as easily as that one did, this'll be a cinch! Erin and Jim, thanks for your work with this. Since we've got a lot more possibilities now than we had, we'll scratch the comment deadline for now, to give people more time to view Erin's finds. I'll try to take a look at these myself ASAP --though that might not be until Wednesday!

message 29: by Jim (new)

695116 Erin, I really liked the first one, Bonded.

I copied a couple of other groups logos on to my PC & looked at them. Looks like the logo is about 50x60 in the small size & 110x128 in the larger size, both 24 bpp. That's not many pixels to get a picture into, so it needs to be simple.

message 28: by Erin (new)

1525983 Alright, well I didn't think I'd find so much so fast but, here are some links to some wonderful pictures all that should shrink well.

http://iizzard.deviantart.com/art/Bonded...
http://b1nd1.deviantart.com/art/Pumpkin-...
http://flyingcarpets.deviantart.com/art/...
http://snowskadi.deviantart.com/art/Elve...
http://tinypilot.deviantart.com/art/Bye-...
http://rogue-of-the-night.deviantart.com...
http://hibbary.deviantart.com/art/Azzy-6...

Now, I will need to double check with the creators of these, but so long as we give them credit they should all be ok with us using their work. Just tell me which ones you like and then I can ask the artists for permission. They will should all say ok since, it will be getting their work seen by more people.

If you really love one of these works you can buy a copy of it.

message 27: by Erin (new)

1525983 When shrunken the haunted house is too detailed so it doesn't show. The moon with the tree shrunk well, but got a few white spots on my computer. This website might shrink it better then the program I was using. The animated moon while simple might wind up looking the best because it is so simple. If you give me a couple of days I might be able to get something or if all else fails create something.

message 26: by alicia (new)

668363 I can't decide i like the moon through the tree or the haunted house.

message 25: by Werner (new)

903390 That's a good point! I think the only way to do that would be to try to post each one in the logo position, one by one, and leave each one up for a couple of days. I'll see if I can post one today before I have to leave for work; and we'll extend the comment/voting period for a week --'til noon on October 8.

message 24: by Jim (new)

695116 Could we see them as they'd look for the logo. My concern is that the scale will change how they look. For instance, one neat looking moon is so small that in the logo, it might look like a dot.

message 23: by Werner (new)

903390 Okay, in the interests of expediting matters and reaching a decision, I move that nominations be closed --and unless anybody passionately objects, that motion is carried! Warm thanks to everybody who supplied links, suggestions, or other input.

The five nominees are: the book cover with the witch/werewolf/vampire (link provided by Ranata); the haunted house (link provided by Ikiwiki); the ravens (link provided by Aaron); the full moon seen through leaves (link provided by Ikiwiki); and the glowing orb (link provided by Lori). You can use the links in the postings above to view any of these you haven't seen yet. If you haven't expressed an opinion yet, and want to, post it before noon (EDT) on Wednesday. I'll tabulate the responses then, and see if I can manage to put the winning logo in place. (I'm assuming it won't cause copyright problems --if it does, I guess you all can e-mail me in Leavenworth! :-) )

message 22: by Lori (last edited Sep 28, 2008 02:57PM) (new)

263406 An orb or a moon would be cool. My personal opinion is that the typical vampire, werewolf, haunted house, etc. would be too campy/obvious. I don't mean to hurt any feelings. Here is an orb pic I found on Google Images:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y129/Ga...

message 21: by Emilee (new)

934927 REally neat orb's!

message 20: by Ikiwiki (new)

message 19: by Ikiwiki (new)

1519495 Okay, not an orb, but kind of a cool "spooky moon" image...

http://www.adobenerds.com/tutorial/photo...

message 18: by Ikiwiki (new)

1519495 I did some searching, here's the most decent orb I could find so far...

http://i12.tinypic.com/4p4glfr.jpg

I'll keep looking and see if I can find anything else.

message 17: by Lori (new)

263406 What about just an orb? A black background with a glowing orb.

message 16: by Alexis (new)

1178888 I really liked that pic Aaron and the accompanying poem. I'd still say i pick the haunted house though just because it seems like it goes more with the group theme.

message 15: by Werner (last edited Sep 24, 2008 06:26AM) (new)

903390 Aaron, that's a good find, and thanks for sharing it. Personally, I'm still inclined to think that the haunted house logo would be more suggestive of our focus. But before I put it up, I'll take any comments from anyone in the group through the weekend (my wife and I will be having company then, starting tomorrow, so I won't get a chance to be back on the Internet until next week, but I'll read all comments then). Then, we'll see about putting something in place of that question mark!
