Group logo
So far, we've never had a nifty group logo like many of the other Goodreads groups have (mostly because I'm not computer adept enough to create one :-) ); we've just made do with that question mark. But there are probably some spooky graphics out there that would make good logos, and spruce up our page a bit! Has anybody got a suggestion? I'm not even sure if any member can post the logo, or if I have to do it (I never moderated a group before this one); but we can cross that bridge once we come to it.
A logo? Hmmm, never thought of that. Good idea, though.
If we can agree on a basic set of ideas as to what we want on that Group Logo I might be able to cook up one? (Albeit I am not much of a cook;-))
Well, since people aren't chiming in with numerous suggestions, I'll throw in a few. A tombstone with a hand reaching up out of the ground could be a possibility, or a grinning skeleton, or perhaps a flying bat or bats. Actually, I'm not particular; I think most anything would beat that question mark! Henrik, I'd say you can have a free hand to come up with something, and if the rest of us don't like it, we can tell you. (And remember, guys and gals, in legal circles the maxim is, "Silence is consent." :-) )I think there is computer software (and perhaps there are places on the Internet) that offer downloadable graphics for various purposes. Anything designed for a Halloween decoration might be a possibility. Anyway, when you can come up with something, we'll try to figure out how to get it on-site. But first things first!
These are just images I picked up off of Google images but when I think of supernatural, I think of vampires and other creepy things. So how about this type of vamp:http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/reviews/190/1190669361_1.jpg
This one actually says ghosts, vampires and witches: http://www.lonepinepublishing.com/img/co...
Just a thought! I wanted to contribute a bit. Thanks Werner for getting me back here!
Ranata, you're welcome, and thanks for the ideas! Look these over, everybody, and let us know what you all think. I've checked both of them out, and I'd have to say I like the Lone Pine Publishing one the best --it's more expressive of the variety of literature that's included in our group focus.Of course, that one is apparently a book cover, and book covers are copyrighted. But, the publisher and author might be glad for the free publicity if we use it for a logo; and since the image is online already, it might be downloadable in the logo position by the same technique some of us have used to put our photos on our profiles.
I also like the Lone Pine Publishing one. Nice find!
If it comes down to copywrite, what about a haunted house logo like Alicia recommended? - http://marylandtristateparanormal.com/im...
I think the haunted house one on Ikiwiki's link would be perfect! When I have more time, I'll see if I can transfer it to our page, and try it out as our logo. If folks don't like it, we can always change it; but that would give everybody a chance to see how they like it, anyway.
haunted house is cool, but i also found this, i don't know i like it alot but you guys may not, and it's not extremely supernatural, but i like ravenshttp://solacetemple.wordpress.com/2006/1...
Aaron, that's a good find, and thanks for sharing it. Personally, I'm still inclined to think that the haunted house logo would be more suggestive of our focus. But before I put it up, I'll take any comments from anyone in the group through the weekend (my wife and I will be having company then, starting tomorrow, so I won't get a chance to be back on the Internet until next week, but I'll read all comments then). Then, we'll see about putting something in place of that question mark!
I really liked that pic Aaron and the accompanying poem. I'd still say i pick the haunted house though just because it seems like it goes more with the group theme.
I did some searching, here's the most decent orb I could find so far...

I'll keep looking and see if I can find anything else.
Okay, not an orb, but kind of a cool "spooky moon" image...
http://www.adobenerds.com/tutorial/photo...
An orb or a moon would be cool. My personal opinion is that the typical vampire, werewolf, haunted house, etc. would be too campy/obvious. I don't mean to hurt any feelings. Here is an orb pic I found on Google Images:

Okay, in the interests of expediting matters and reaching a decision, I move that nominations be closed --and unless anybody passionately objects, that motion is carried! Warm thanks to everybody who supplied links, suggestions, or other input. The five nominees are: the book cover with the witch/werewolf/vampire (link provided by Ranata); the haunted house (link provided by Ikiwiki); the ravens (link provided by Aaron); the full moon seen through leaves (link provided by Ikiwiki); and the glowing orb (link provided by Lori). You can use the links in the postings above to view any of these you haven't seen yet. If you haven't expressed an opinion yet, and want to, post it before noon (EDT) on Wednesday. I'll tabulate the responses then, and see if I can manage to put the winning logo in place. (I'm assuming it won't cause copyright problems --if it does, I guess you all can e-mail me in Leavenworth! :-) )
Could we see them as they'd look for the logo. My concern is that the scale will change how they look. For instance, one neat looking moon is so small that in the logo, it might look like a dot.
That's a good point! I think the only way to do that would be to try to post each one in the logo position, one by one, and leave each one up for a couple of days. I'll see if I can post one today before I have to leave for work; and we'll extend the comment/voting period for a week --'til noon on October 8.
When shrunken the haunted house is too detailed so it doesn't show. The moon with the tree shrunk well, but got a few white spots on my computer. This website might shrink it better then the program I was using. The animated moon while simple might wind up looking the best because it is so simple. If you give me a couple of days I might be able to get something or if all else fails create something.
Alright, well I didn't think I'd find so much so fast but, here are some links to some wonderful pictures all that should shrink well.http://iizzard.deviantart.com/art/Bonded...

Now, I will need to double check with the creators of these, but so long as we give them credit they should all be ok with us using their work. Just tell me which ones you like and then I can ask the artists for permission. They will should all say ok since, it will be getting their work seen by more people.
If you really love one of these works you can buy a copy of it.
Erin, I really liked the first one, Bonded. I copied a couple of other groups logos on to my PC & looked at them. Looks like the logo is about 50x60 in the small size & 110x128 in the larger size, both 24 bpp. That's not many pixels to get a picture into, so it needs to be simple.
For now, the book cover logo is up, "life size," for you all to look at; if the transfers all go as easily as that one did, this'll be a cinch! Erin and Jim, thanks for your work with this. Since we've got a lot more possibilities now than we had, we'll scratch the comment deadline for now, to give people more time to view Erin's finds. I'll try to take a look at these myself ASAP --though that might not be until Wednesday!
I just got a note back from Ivy, the creator of bonded. She is more then happy to allow us to use her work. Here is her website that she would like us to put up some where saying thats the maker of our logo if we use it. http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/6625...
You should check it out even if we don't use bonded because the work is amazing. I'm sure if you really liked another work on there that she'd allow us to use it. Buy some work from her and it'll make her really happy she helped us out, lol!
I think this book logo shows up & sums up the group very well. While I don't like the picture quite as well as 'Bonded', I think it represents the group better. Thanks for checking with Ivy, Erin. If nothing else, you've exposed more people to her work, which is good. Do you have anything up there?
No, none of that work is mine. I copped out and just found some good stuff that always needs exposure.
I tried to post this earlier, but ran into a "Page unavailable" notice; hopefully this time I'll have better luck! When I tried to put up a different trial logo earlier, I discovered that the Goodreads computer program doesn't automatically supply the option of downloading a new picture when you click on one that's already there --it only does that when you click on the question mark. So now that we have a logo up, it's apparently up to stay, unless someone more computer-savvy than I am can change it. Fortunately, it's a good one that fits our focus, and I think most of us like it. (Sorry if anyone is disappointed by this development!) I'll try to contact the book publisher later today and touch base about the copyright issue.
I've found a neat picture ya'll might like for this group. Check out my pic. I found it on www.DigitalBlasphemy.com. Let me know what you think.
Allison, I haven't checked out your suggestion yet, because for some reason the link you supplied won't work on my computer. A problem with any of these suggestions, though, is that I'm not sure if the computer program will let me replace the logo that's up now. Sorry about that --if I'd had a clue that might be the case, I wouldn't have posted any logo on a trial basis! Again, I hope none of you all who shared other suggestions are too disappointed! I think the search for a logo has actually been fun, and I hope the rest of you have gotten some enjoyment from it, too. :-)
As far as I could tell (and Jim MacLachlan also checked it out), that option didn't seem to be presented. But, I've just sent an inquiry about this to Goodreads Technical Support, so it's not over yet --the logo discussion may get a new lease on life. :-) I'll keep you all posted!
Rora, as Ikiwiki might say, you rock! :-) I went to "group settings" as you suggested, and found "delete picture" immediately. So that picture is gone (for the moment), and I'll try shortly to post the haunted house picture, so you all can have a couple of days to look at that one. The question of what logo to have is open for discussion again!
I've just taken the haunted house trial logo down and uploaded a new one for you all to look at for a couple of days. I picked what I thought was the best of the full moon ones, since some people had wondered how well the moon would show up when it's reduced in size. (Sorry I didn't do this earlier; I've got a lot of irons in the fire!)Personally, my vote would still be for the haunted house. It's true that when it's reduced in size, a lot of the wonderful detail is lost. But it does still bring a dark, brooding presence to the page that comes across as suitably creepy, IMO!
So far, I've liked the book cover the best with the moon second. Too much detail is lost on the house for my taste - I'd put it second if I could see it better - but it's not a big deal no matter which you want, Werner.
Well, we'll go by whatever the majority wants --or I should probably say, the plurality; with this many choices, we probably won't get a majority, unless we have a run-off of the top two! It'll take awhile to post them all so everybody can see them logo-size; but we don't have to be in a hurry. :-)
I like the moon logo better than the house, but only because so much detail is lost on the house due to its being so small. I would like to see this book cover logo, since I joined after it was removed, I guess.
Becky, to see what I've been referring to as the "book cover" logo (since it is the cover from a book), go back to message #5 on this thread, and click on the second link there (the Lone Pine Publishing one). That's also a good logo --and since I haven't heard from Lone Pine in response to my copyright question, I'd say, on the theory that "silence is consent," that they'd have no objection to our using it!
