Phil the Arcane (PhiltheArcane) | 43 comments I'm pretty sure it is eleven days.

"...case for eight silver nobles and a span note...I could buy my lute back for the same amount of money, so long as I did it within eleven days."

WMF Ch 53 "The Sheer"

Would anyone like to help me piece together the days which go into a span?

Gaard | 84 comments well, i know Kvothe plays at Ankers on Felling night, there's also mourning, so that's 2 of 11

Thanks. Here are some more of my notes.

3rd Day is ? - is 6 ds before Felling
"Come back in four days. If you are clever enough to keep from tearing out your stitches, I will have you here."
"...the Felling-night crowd that filled the room with a low roar of conversation. My stitches had come out two days earlier..."

4th Day is Shuden - 5 ds earlier than Cendling - "Shuden.The thirty-fifth."

8th Day is Felling - "But on the eighth day Tehlu did not pause to sleep or eat. And thus it was that at the end of Felling Tehlu caught Encanis."

9th Day is Cendling (?) - "But if it was the thirty-fifth then I only had five days to get to the University. I knew from Ben that admissions only lasted until Cendling."
""And which night was that?" Sim pressed.
Manet paused, looking down at his tray. "Felling night?"
Wilem shook his head, muttering something in Siaru.
Simmon looked horrified. "Manet, yesterday was Cendling. Has it beentwo days since you've slept?""

Gaard | 84 comments I wonder if this is something pat would answer on a tour stop signing or something? I really would like to know these days. I think they all have to do something with the Tehlu Ecanis story

Gavin | 53 comments 11.

the story of a span is similar to the story of a week in a sense they're both based off religious stories.

"and on the seventh day god rested"

the spans story is in notw told by Trapis. The one about Tehelu chasing down Encansis and ridding the world of Demons

Sophie (Kurosymph) | 28 comments And now, how many spans does a month contain? And is their month of the same length as ours?

In the end of WMF, a week was mentionned, when Kvothe said he worked on a project for weeks... Are the weeks and spans coextisting in the kingkiller world, and only used in different parts of it?

message 7: by Phil the Arcane, Minion the 3rd (new)

Phil the Arcane (PhiltheArcane) | 43 comments Mourning, as Gaard mentioned, is in there. It almost seems like our Sunday. Not sure what day of the span it is yet.

7th Day is Caenin - "But on the seventh day, Tehlu drew near before Encanis could bring his power to bear and the seventh city was saved. That is why seven is a lucky number, and why we celebrate on Caenin."

Sophie (Kurosymph) | 28 comments Other names of days are mentionned but not their order.
Anker wanted Kvothe to play on Reaving. I've also got Theden and Orden.

message 9: by Gaard (new)

Gaard | 84 comments so far we've got Mourning:Sunday, Felling:Saturday, Theden:?, Orden:?, Reaving:Friday?, Caenin:?, Cendling:?, Shuden:?, and then a couple remain un-named, good work guys we'll piece this together yet i know it!

message 10: by JK (new)

JK (eimajtl) | 68 comments I don't think you can really match them up with the days of our week with the difference in numbering...

message 11: by Gaard (new)

Gaard | 84 comments Well yeah I know, but I was just trying to give an association... it was basically me just trying to give a reference, obviously we can't associate them too fully to our week being 11 to 7

message 12: by Gaard (new)

Gaard | 84 comments So did everyone just give up on this, alas we probably named all the named days

message 13: by Phil the Arcane, Minion the 3rd (new)

Phil the Arcane (PhiltheArcane) | 43 comments I just think that it sank in to obscurity. This site is not the best for keeping threads in the forefront.

There are more days if I remember when Kvothe was speaking with the two girls he rescued after wiping out the fake Edema Ruh. She goes on to talk about a lot of them.

I'm looking for the passages right now.

message 14: by Phil the Arcane, Minion the 3rd (new)

Phil the Arcane (PhiltheArcane) | 43 comments Here it is.

“What day is it?”
I counted in my head. “Felling.”
“They came into town on Theden.” She paused. “Five days ago?”

So far we have; Day 1 (Mourning?), Day 2, Theden, Shuden, Day 5, Day 6, Caenin, Felling, Cendling, Day 9, Day 10 and Day 11.

In my previous post (message 3) I said that the 3rd day is 6 days before Felling, I think I meant 5 days. Yeah, that's it.

I miss anything else?

Phil the Arcane (PhiltheArcane) | 43 comments Hmmm. Now I've gotten something wrong.

It read: FELLING—NOON. Eighth day of admissions, plenty of time to prepare...She showed me her own small ivory tile. Cendling at fourth bell...Two extra more days of preparation would be a godsend.

Sanjiv | 359 comments Excellent work. I sometimes bookmark things like these when I come to them(on an e reader), but I rarely check the saved notes to put all the pieces together. (I guess I could use that tactic for the currency thread)

I think all this will pick up again once people begin hearing about the third book.

message 17: by Gaard (last edited Apr 27, 2011 09:40am) (new)

Gaard | 84 comments so we have for sure named 8 out of 11 days. and in this order i believe...Mourning(1?), Shuden(4),then some order: theden, Orden, Caenin, then Reaving(7), Felling(8), Cendling(10) so we are missing 3 days, that i don't think have been named.

message 18: by Tsuki (last edited Oct 17, 2011 11:45pm) (new)

Tsuki | 2 comments “There are so many books in the Archives,” Wil said slowly, “that merely reading all the titles would take you a full span.” He paused, looking at me intently. “Eleven full days without pause for food or sleep.”

Is Wil saying that 11 days is less than a span, by saying it can be done in less time if you skip sleep and meal?

Assuming meal is 20 min each, and sleep is 8 hours, it would be 99 hours extra at the end of 11 days. Roughly 15 days. Seems too long.

message 19: by Sanjiv (new)

Sanjiv | 359 comments I think he's saying [1 full span]=[11 days without pause]. It would take more days if one paused to eat and sleep. Excellent find, though.

message 20: by Tsuki (new)

Tsuki | 2 comments Gotcha. Thanks!

message 21: by Steven (new)

Steven (AffrontedFetus) | 29 comments I know this may be already confirmed but if any doubts linger in the beginning of NotW kvothe says something along the lines of "2 span, 22 days"

message 22: by Adam (new)

Adam | 56 comments In WMF he also says he has a full span to recover his lute from a pawn broker in Severen, 11 days without his lute.
