VWrulesChick | 1534 comments As the group is growing, I wanted to start this thread where you can join in to the conversation at your leisure to let the group know what you are reading (which may interest/inspire other members to read it) and how you are liking or disliking a book.

I am currently consuming the Millenium Series, with The Girl Who Played with Fire (Millennium, #2) The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson. I am enjoying this series as it has a great pace and finding it insightfully written, although deals with disturbing situations. I enjoy the banter between Salander and Blomkvist and other characters and look forward to see where the story goes.

Really, I just want to be a Nosy Nancy and see what you have under your noses or downloaded on your e-readers! Please do tell - no judgement here.

Betty (nightreader) I just consumed a glass of water following it now with a chaser of very strong coffee (& 1% milk) because I'm falling asleep at the computer working on my email.
Okay, when I saw your message on the email, I thought that was what you wanted to know but I see I'm wrong, so here's the real answer:
FM for Murder by Patricia Rockwell, a Pamela Barnes Acoustic Mystery. This is the second forensic acoustics book I've read by Patricia and enjoying it as much as the first.l

Well, I hope the coffee and water keep you awake! hehe

Oh, I do love a good mystery! I will check out Patrixia Rockwell and her books. Thanks!

message 4: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) Check out my blog, there are reviews of lots of good mysteries on there of all types: http://nightreader-blog.blogspot.com/

I am a little more awake, just trying to find some photos I emailed to myself from my Mom's to upload onto my facebook album Growing Up Betty. Maybe I'll have to pull them off the emails again! ;-(

Love your topics!

VWrulesChick | 1534 comments ohhh Thanks Betty. Good to hear you are feeling a more awake. Good luck on uploading your pics.

My pleasure, trying to keep it current and interesting. Please feel to suggest ideas or topics should you wish to discuss. I am all ears here. :)

Kat | 38 comments I am reading The Whisperer in Darkness by H. P. Lovecraft. For one of my classes, we are to read multiple print sources and find as many grammatical errors as possible. I love Lovecraft's work so this was a no brainer.

ohh, sounds scary and dark...boo!

message 8: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) Reading Lovecraft was usually an all-nighter for me. Loved the books though.

message 9: by Petra (new)

Petra | 247 comments I'm reading The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore. So far, it's totally zany.
During my commutes, I'm listening to Clara and Mr. Tiffany. After a slow start, it's gotten really good. Lots of talk about art and glass, around a story of personal growth and achievement.

CJC (CCCalgary) | 60 comments A Pale View of Hills
Also Lion of Ireland

my e-reader needed charging so i picked up Lion of Ireland while I was waiting - oops now I am in the middle of 2!

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1 comments I am reading House Rules. Jodi Picoult is one of my favourite authors. I will admit though that you have to space her books out. They're really good, but totally formula written and they can get a bit repetitive at times. So far I am enjoying this one a lot.

message 12: by CJC (new)

CJC (CCCalgary) | 60 comments Hi again - well I forgot both my e-reader and my paper book when we went to visit my inlaws this weekend. My mother in law leant me The Murder Stone by Louise Penny - (a Canadian Author. It is actually the 4th book in her detective Gamache series but they work on their own. Anyway! Loved it! I will pick up some more of hers for sure.

VWrulesChick | 1534 comments Interesting reads!!

Just finished The Girl Who Played with Fire (Millennium, #2) and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Both very different stories and characters, but enjoyed them thoroughly.

Jennifer D. (BookishJoJo) | 561 comments Shamefully, I am consuming no Canadian authors at the moment. Though my cuppa Earl Grey is lovely! On my eReader, I am reading: The Keeper of Lost Causes by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen and in tree-book format, I am reading: Cancer Ward by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

VWrulesChick | 1534 comments Do not feel shameful! One can read books other than from Canada, it allows us experience reading from different parts of the world and cultures.

Not full-blown shame!! :P I am an equal country opportunity reader. Diversity, it's what makes Canada great! Hee hee hee.

VWrulesChick | 1534 comments Hahaha - you are too funny, Jennifer!

message 24: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (classmum) I am reading a tome! At least it is for me. The Last Empress - Madame Chiang Kai Shek and the Birth of Modern China by Hannah Bakula. But then on the flip side I also got in some new children's books from the library so when I need a mental break I will be reading those.

Andrea (Hermia) | 258 comments I am reading Murder In Belleville by Cara Black. This is the second book in the Aimee Leduc Investigation series. The descriptions of Paris and the fast pace are just what I need right now. For research I am reading, I believe for the third time Barbara Hodgson's No Place For A Lady, Tales of Adventurous Women Travellers. Barbara Hodgson is not only one of Canada's best authors she is also a book designer. The information I have found in here is invaluable. I am writing a story set in the 1800s that includes travel to Turkey. I have to own this book!

Petra | 247 comments Andrea, your story sounds interesting. Let us know how you progress.

I've just finished Swann's Way, which was really good. Lots of description and a little bit of navel-gazing but so beautifully done that it didn't matter. A good story-line, too.

I'm currently reading Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body, which is quite fascinating.

I'm waiting for Through Black Spruce to arrive from the Library. I hope to get it soon.

I remember reading a Barbara Hodgson book called The Tattooed Map, I think it was, years ago. It was a beautifully produced book. Very unique.

Petra | 247 comments I'm currently reading The Little Stranger and really enjoying it. It's gothic and eerie.

On my commutes, I'm listening to Forgery of Venus. Very odd, mind-meld sort of idea about an artist in modern time who "becomes" famous artists of other times. He doesn't really visualize their lives but seems to actually relive episodes of their lives. Very odd so far but definitely interesting.

I read The Little Stranger while we were camping during September and it totally freaked me out!! Would only read it during the day!!!! (Those BC forests are way spooky at night!). It was a great story.

eva (yoyis87) | 44 comments I just started today The Art of Racing in the Rainin my e-reader and I have to say so far I like it. It's very sweet.
Also I'm reading the memoir by Portia de Rossi (Unbearable Lightness) which is incredibly insightful in the mind of an eating disorder. Very honest and not too badly written.

You are definitely an active reader - thoroughly impressed here. I can't have more than 2 on the go or I get all muddled up.

Well I don't always read this many books at once, however they are for different things. What keeps me from getting muddled up is that they are not all fiction. Then I would get muddled up! I usually have a book of poetry and a spiritual book on the go all of the time. The culinary books for me are for learning about different foods and cultures, so I don't necessarily read those everyday. The Babara Hodgson although a pleasure to read is for research that I am currently doing. As for the Howard Engel book I wanted to read it because it is part of the bookclub and it is an interesting story. I am looking forward to hearing what others have to say about the book.

message 39: by Petra (last edited 17 de May 09:43) (new)

Petra | 247 comments I finished both The Little Stranger and Forgery of Venus. Both were interesting read and I'd recommend them.
The Little Stranger is a gothic, creepy story to be read on a thundery night when the lights have gone out and you read by candlelight. Bwaahaahaahaa......
The Forgery of Venus is an interesting story of truth, reality, lies and how to determine which is happening/occurring. Lots of art history and a good story. I have another of Gruber's books, The Book of Air and Shadows, on my bookshelf and will read it soon.

I've now started Doc: A Novel, which hooked me within the first few pages. Very well written.

Thanks for the update Petra.
I am looking forward to reading
The Little Strangerand Forgery of Venus. I have them on my to read list. I like a good ghost story! I read Smoke and Mirrors Smoke and Mirrors (Tony Foster, #2)byTanya Huffand it was spine tingling. I read it in a cabin in the woods where it was very dark! Can anyone recommend some more good ghost stories to read?

Tracy | 5 comments I just finished Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum and I have to say, I liked it, even though it didn't get great reviews on Goodreads. (I guess I'm not very disciminate when it comes to writing style etc. - I mostly just love a good story.)
And I just started The High Road by Terry Fallis. I was thrilled to find out there was sequel to The Best Laid Plans - I had no idea! I'm considering running for political office this fall and I have to say, Angus is very inspiring!

Hey Tracy, thanks for sharing what you are currently consuming! Good luck in your run for office this fall.

Please check out our HELP CENTER folder for details on how to add links to books, bookcovers and authors.

The recipes are fantastic in the Thai book. We have new favourites from that book but a couple that didn't work well for us (e.g. heavenly beef but I will admit that I tried it with deer (wild)) And one recipe was too salty for my tastes but I suspect it was very authentic. The curry fish and the Burmese chicken are two of our faves and there are still many more to try. Once you have a go let me know which ones are your favourtites.

That's why I like reading reviews. Opinions vary, and I always find it especially interesting when someone's opinion differs from others!

My hubby & I have watched it from the beginning. He keeps waiting for the battle to start. There's a lot of talking and I can't keep all of the relationships straight.
