Lesbians in Literature

What are you're favorite literary lesbian couples?
In Middlesex, Cal and her Object broke my heart. I still remember their scenes together...
And even though they're crazy, I adore Anna and Claire in David Mamet's Boston Marriage.
In Michelle Tea's Passionate Mistakes and Intricate Corruption of One Girl in America, she loves so many girls, it's hard to keep track. But the book is great nonetheless.
Carissa Halston's A Girl Named Charlie Lester has Charlie and Ray, who are funny and loving and, at times, unerringly real.
So, which girl-loving girls do you enjoy reading most?
Oddly. John Bowen's The Girls probably has my favorite lesbian couple thus far. Charming and British and by far the most real (characters AND couple) of all I have read. Plus, they named their baby Butch, which I continue to find a viable name for my yet-to-be-desired, late-in-life, miracle-of-science child. Then there is always Ruth and Idgie . . .
Dateland by Jennifer Parello has the most interesting couple for me thus far. Not because I identify with them but because they are so believable :D
Hi All, I'm new here. (Well, I've been a member for a minute, but never posted.)
My all-time favorite literary lesbian couple is Shug and Celie from The Color Purple (and Temple of My Familiar and maybe in some other stuff of Alice Walker's I haven't read yet). Who could NOT love them???? Their love gave us "The Gospel According to Shug"!
Runner-up is Beebo and Laura from Ann Bannon's various '50s and '60s pulp novels. OK, yeah, they end badly, but the dysfunction is so familiar!
Check out Jesse and Kit in Carol Anshaw's novel Aquamarine, if you've never read it; they are definitely my favorite literary lesbian couple. It's a fabuous novel in any event. The lesbian couple who make a brief, but surprising appearance in Richard Russo's new novel, Bridge of Sighs, are also quite lovable.
