1575697 Apparently The Colbert Report interview aired on Dec. 16. There's a link on Stephen King's website. Leads you to the whole episode but the segment. "Better know a Stephen" airs after the second commercial break. It's pretty funny.

1166992 One of my friends at school told me this story the other day: one of his friends from home was at the beach one year, sitting reading his copy of Skeleton Crew when he looks over and sees this man. He does a double take or two, flips to the back cover picture a few times, and realizes that Stephen King, the man himself, is sitting a few yards away from. So he takes his book over, asks for an autograph, and Stephen gladly obliges and they proceed to have a half hour convo about what he thought of each of the stories and what Stephen wanted to portray in each of them.

I'm so jealous! I've been dying to randomly bump into him somewhere--it'd be a dream come true! lol

1376766 Haha, Rob! Touche!

I did see the comments, and it just goes to show that people will always expect more, no matter what. =\ Whatever.

Right on, Kandice. People just love to burst balloons nowadays, don't they? I suppose it makes them feel superior in some small way.

But anyhow...I saw this story over the weekend (*sticks out tongue at Becky*) and I commend King for his generosity.

No matter what THEY say, I think the King's are great.

738744 I clicked Becky’s link…have y’all read any of the comments on that article? Most are really great, but some of them have me totally pissed off. Can you believe the way some people act?!

1376766 Pfft. He calls himself a fan but doesn't keep up with every single article that mentions King's name! Some fan! :P

(♥ you Rob!)

message 96: by Kandice (new)

1396160 Hmmmm...I'll have to think of something quick. Thanks@-@

message 95: by Becky (new)

1376766 Tease him first, of course. ;)

message 94: by Kandice (new)

1396160 That's what I get for not clicking on every single link. Rob will, of course, tease me now...what's a girl to do?:D

message 93: by Becky (new)

868376 Oooh! She should add Springsteen! Never seen anyone give as much in his shows as he does.

message 89: by Kandice (new)

1396160 My 5th grade daughter has to make a scrapbook for school about people who "Give it all they got". It's a long term project worth a LOT of their grade for History. Anyway, she has an artist section and one of the people she is covering is...Stephen King! She was working on is pages last night, and it's so exciting to see his pictures and lists of his accomplishments in a project my child is working on. She is covering his accident and adding that he inserted himself into the DT series.

Love it!

86285 It was moved... I haven't heard when it will be on yet.

message 87: by Patrick (new)

2110350 Not sure when Stephen King's on the Colbert Report. I checked it on Hulu but while the Fela's Zombie dance was cool sorta, my heart was broken when Stephen King did not show. Was it canceled or moved?

message 86: by Rachel (new)

1575697 given the show and the subject matter of the book, i'd say both.

message 85: by Angie, Constant Reader (new)

86285 Soo... it wasn't on anyways... looks like it will be on at a different time. I will try to keep people updated. Rob... I am not sure? Probably to advertise the new book?

message 84: by Rob (new)

2198088 Talking politics or his new book?

message 83: by Angie, Constant Reader (new)

86285 King is supposed to be on the Colbert Report tonight... get your TIVO ready!

I would disagree that everyone has OCD to some degree, because of the "D" part of the acronym. There are certain diagnostic criteria that must be met in order for someone to be diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I would agree that everyone probably experiences obsessions and/or compulsions in his/her life on occasion, as it is human nature. And, while some mental disorders may seem to exist on continua, it may not be the case for some or even all of them, as there may be certain biological (specifically brain-based) causes of a particular disorder, as modern neuroscience research has suggested. I can't say I would be surprised to find out that SK has been diagnosed with OCD to some degree though. I'm sure it is part of what makes him such an excellent writer. :-)

1351926 I found this interview on the Simon & Schuster website where SK is talking about "N.", the short story in Just after Sunset, and he says he had OCD "to some degree" which was one of the reasons he wrote it. I guess everyone has it to some degree or other, that's what's so scary, generally, about mental illness, that its just a continuum, with normal on one end, and as things get progressively more intense, abnormal on the other - "abnormal" might just be doing something "normal" a hundred times.

1181579 ^^Yowsah!! I have at least three recent issues of The New Yorker in my work bag---haven't looked at the table of contents of any of them (is it OK to use the word "of" 3 times in a row like that?) so did not know a King short story lurked within!! BRB.....

Nope. The most recent issue I have is Oct. 12th. Stupid rural post office!! I swear they keep my mags and read 'em before they finally stuff 'em in my mailbox.

I have never cared for poetry so after reading The Bone Church I am not sure if it was any good or not. To me it was just odd and not all that great.

1575697 That was interesting book because it's very current unlike some other unauthorized biographies about King. Some of her sources, magazines and stuff, i had read before.

2110350 Yeah...it's so darn awful when c***s talk about Stephen King like that. : )

message 67: by Becky (new)

1376766 It really kills me. I don't see how she would even get that anyway. King is always referring to Rowling and how great she is, and he is MARRIED to a female author. I doubt that his comments about Meyer's writing ability have anything to do with chauvinism. *rolls eyes*

message 66: by Jennifer (new)

2628850 I must have re-read the word "machovanistic" 3 or 4 times thinking..."WHAT???" lol.

message 65: by Becky (new)

1376766 I thought that both comments were funny. Granted, I did like the Twilight books too, but you're absolutely right Jennifer, they are straight fluff.

By the way, I did read the article defending King by explaining what good writing is vs good storytelling is - and it makes a good point that King -along with hordes of finicky readers too, I'm sure- are all judging Meyer's book harshly for not being something that she had never intended it to be. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

But I just had to laugh at the girl defending Twilight. The girl who loved the books so much that she can't spell the author's name right.

It really cracked me up where she got some of her accusations too. Apparently because King doesn't use Facebook or Myspace (when would he have the time??) and because people have to *gasp* sign up for the message board on his site, he doesn't care what the public thinks. (Except for the fact that he is constantly touring and doing book signings and answering fan mail and interacting with his fans...) And I'm not sure how he was arrogant on his FAQs either. Apparently, these days, protecting yourself from future plagiarism lawsuits is the HEIGHT of arrogance.

My favorite part though, really has to be when she calls King a "Machovanistic PIG!" I totally want that get added to the urban dictionary. I don't know what it means, but it has a nice ring to it. LOL

Here's the comment in its glorious entirety for anyone curious but not wanting to go to the site:

I think he's such a JERK! I'd like to say other things but we can't go swearing on here. What a moron! I haven't read his books, but what the heck?! He goes dissing Stephanie Meyer- I HAD to read all of her books b/c they were sooo good- and I'm 27- i have a complete life- the fact that he's like 'she writes pg material for hs girls" is such krap! What a donkey! Stephanie is OBVIOUSLY talented. WHo the heck asked for his opinion in the first place and why would he think he's qualified to critique her just b/c he's an author. What a limited mind he has!!! I feel like never picking up one of his dumb books! He is a machovanistic PIG! I had respect for him before b/c he's written so many best selling books but PUHLEASE! He's totally classless. He writes different types of books- why would he even comment on a totally differ type of book? I even went on his website and the way he answers his readers questions- he does it SoOO ARROGANTLY! AND he doesn't even have facebook or myspace or even a section on his website besides stupid Message forums (which I AM NOT GOING TO SIGN UP to just leave him a comment) so that we could leave him a COMMENT about his stupid CRITIQUES because he DOESN'T CARE WHAT THE PUBLIC THINKS (just look at the way he answers his fans' questions)! I could say more nasty things about him, but why even bother wasting my own personal time!

She's 27. That's scary.

When you're talking about literature, good is subjective too. What makes it good? Some of what's considered the best literature ever written bores me to tears. I like a book that reels me in, makes me think, surprises me, makes me laugh and cry and at times makes me want to stomp on it in frustration because I'm that deeply pulled into the story and the characters. The nice thing is, we can read what we want regardless of who thinks it's good or bad. =D

Wow...that paragraph-long comment going off on King is funny. How can you blast someone if you've never read any of their work?
I enjoyed the Twilight series, but I added those books to my "fluff" category. Fast, easy reads. I had heard about his comments on the radio one day. Sure made some people mad. o.O
